Interesting, Mahathir did not mention he will build water treatment plant for treated water in Johor.
(1) The water yield - is falling drastically from 80% to 31% to 21% - and this will be the consistent trend - due to drought and lesser rainfall.
(2) Due to industrial pollution
(3) Due to seawater pollution
The water sources will gradually deteriorate.
So it is a certainty that building new water treatment plant will be a sure loss.

Great that our PM is strong and firm in our position on the Water Agreement 1962 - that has impact on our Sovereignty in the Separation Agreement 1965.

LKY gave NEA a challenge to clean up the Singapore river in 10 years. It was done! LHL should gives PUB a challenge to provide 250mgd within 5 years! I am sure it could be done with new technology!

Sign a water investment development contract with Singapore and Singapore will abide by terms of contract, everyone knows that. No need to be afraid of Singapore not abiding. Save money for Malaysia government, get more more money invested into Malaysia through more water development projects and get quality water in future. Still don't do it? Wait Singapore brings such idea to Indonesia or invest in more desalination plants and Malaysia end up with nothing,

By all means do it, get the water from Indonesia then..build the pipe between Sumatra and Singapore..each time got earthquake in Sumatra, let's see whether the pipe will be affected...at 3 sen (MYR currency), the price is pathetically low..it would not be much loss to us..

Malaysia needs more people like you to encourage your government to terminate the water agreement. FYI, safe-guarding the river's water from pollution is not part of the water agreement. I guess Malaysia is also following the agreement to the letter as well.
Kenneth Avan
And if you think Indonesia is a much more benevolent country who would sell us water at an equivalent of 3 sen per 1000 gallons, you really are naive. The hostage-taker will just switch from Malaysia to Indonesia.
Do you know that Indonesia also wants to take back their airspace delegated to Singapore? And that they also have maritime boundary issues with Singapore? Which other country do you want to run to to get your water? Pipeline from Brunei or Thailand?
The water agreement runs out in 2061. Investments in other sources of water, such as desalination plants, will be an eventuality. So your comment really is a toothless threat.

Kenneth Avan : you are right. When they see you are wealthy their eyes turn red. If Singapore does not has an Army we already got Rob many times. History shows this is true.

Yeok Fong Yong so the moral of the story is for small countries to stay humble and not bite off more than they can chew. However, the arrogance and false superiority displayed by many Singaporeans (which in many ways, have been encouraged by the "we can achieve anything"mantra the government has been indoctrinating us) belie the real limitations we face.
When push comes to shove, our snowflake generation will be the first to flee the country. This is why LHL is so desperate not rock the boat.

The supply is unreliable...

As water is the utmost important element for any living things and animals to survive, it's a good and well thought diplomatic move for PM Lee to raise it as concerns over their own Johor river's pollution that cause livelihood issues in sustainable water supply for both countries.
Indirectly, he is diplomatically warning M'sia to nip the bud of the root cause of their own issues instead of blaming or pointing figures at others for their own psoblems.

Our PM did well in the joint news conference, confident, firm, and to the point. It is clear what Singapore's stand is regarding the water agreement and PM Lee is telling Mahathir that he better keep the pollution there in check and stop unstainable pilfering of the river water from upstream of the Linggui dam. That's how the Malaysian govt is doing to ensure they have sufficient water, by pilfering water upstream of the dam.
