For the next phase, Mr Lee said it will be useful to consider how to maximise the long-term benefits of the BRI beyond just improving physical infrastructure.
One way is to help developing countries build up their own capabilities, be it by fostering more local talent, facilitating further technology transfer and involving more local businesses.
Mr Lee said doing so will not only improve the quality and sustainability of the infrastructure projects, but also give local parties a greater stake in the projects’ success.
The BRI should also go beyond traditional bilateral models of cooperation, with projects not having to be limited to “hub-and-spoke arrangements with China”.
“China can partner other countries on projects in third countries,” he said.

PM Lee is right.
BRI should not be restricted only to physical connectivity and infrastructure.
BRI to be successful - should in the next phase look at the :-
(1) Software aspect - eg. getting the local to be involved, uplift them to take advantage of the infra so that they can utilise it effectively
(2) Use multilateral approach - not just spoke and hub approach (between China and the rest) - but many Countries that are inter-connected to one another.
By doing so, the support of the BRI will be whole-hearted and wholesome - and the region as a whole will be more vibrant not only to China but to the whole region participating in the BRI.

And China's soft influence will be more immense than "spoke and hub" approach.

US use to adopt such multi-lateral model (and was hail by the World as a true Global Leader) - but has then resorted to "spoke and hub" under Trump - and has since consequently lose its global influence.

Because it has the undesirable effects of :-
(1) Suspicion of playing one another out - and fueling distrust
(2) Cut the pie out - that will cause global growth to shrink - as compare to a multi-lateral growth that will make the pie bigger.
(3) All these will lead to the failure of BRI.

China if want to do better - should avoid doing what Trump is doing now.

At least LHL was inivited there to particpate in the talks although it sounded more like 'sales talk' on behalf of President Xi. Dr.M on the other hand, also invited but he is there to take lesson and to learn about what the hell "Belt and Road" is all about! It must be quite a humbling experience for this 94 years oldman to sit there and listen to LHL talking.

In reality, China will really trust those who have eternity strong ties with US ? Our PM had clearly spell out that in the event we have to choose between US and China in worsen conflict, Malaysia will choose China..clear cut..that is what China wants to know..speeches are nothing but words to hypnotize people..well, proceed to next phase, declare that in the event of conflict between US and China, who do you choose to side ?

K Tan Don - Don't be silly to want us to pick side.

China Leaders trust Singapore.
US Leaders also trust Singapore.
Simply because we are a trustworthy partner to both SuperPowers --- and not one that play trick or play out one another.

Our relationships with both of them are 圆满 (we mean well for both of them) not 圆滑 (见人说人话,见鬼说鬼话)。(哪里凉,那里坐)。

Singapore will be an honest broker - to broker China and US for peace --- due to a simple fact :-
Picking any sides will be the "end of the World" - when WW3 break out - where US and China involve in a nuclear shooting match.

In fact, both China top Leaders and US top Leaders are listening to our Leaders view for eg in this case :-
(1) PM Lee in Beijing
(2) DPM Heng in US

--- whenever tension go up. (And Leaders of both sides - know that US and China will not go down the path of mutual destruction --- it is "Madness").

It is pre-supposition that has no meaning - of picking side.

K Tan Don, don’t be so certain about that. The prata man can flip any sides any time.

Unker Will : Obviously you wouldn't be able to do that...we understood Singapore has always need to rely on the US. China understand that too. Prata man flips flop doesn't matter. Malaysia has always had record blasting US. China only need to perceive what is possible and what is not possilble. Prata man had taken Malaysia to the next level, which Singapore will never be able to do. Although the support may be artificial, this is something that China wants to hear. Anyway from China's perspective, the Belt and Road is open to anybody..as long as is not US. The biggest loser will be the US

K Tan Don -
I think what you have say about Singapore and China relationship is really laughable.
How much you know about Singapore relationship with China to make such comments?

(1) Mr LKY is always imprint in China's heart - for helping China to transform its Economy into the 2nd Largest Economy in the World.

(2) Singapore has yearly top level Ministerial meeting between Singapore and China.

(3) Singapore has bilateral military training exercise with China PLA.

(4) Singapore is the only Country that have pervasive official and business ties with almost all provinces in China. China's Economic Growth is as important to Singapore as to China.

(5) Singapore has the largest investment in China - more than any other Countries. And in fact, Singapore are so pervasive in taking part in many major development in China.

(6) China even offer Hainan island as military base to Singapore Army for training.

China know that Singapore will be the last Country that will ever betray China --- even to the point that China consider Singapore is like Hongkong, or Taiwan or Macau to China.

You think your comments about Singapore relationship with China can stand water here?

China also know that Singapore will not betray US and US can trust Singapore.

Thus both China and US --- have special trust in Singapore - that we will play a vital role as an honest broker - to mediate between China and US if ever this 2 SuperPowers are likely to come to blow.

(1) Even for brokering talks between China and Taiwan previously - China Leader and Taiwan Leader entrust this to Singapore - to bring the 2 Leaders together for the 1st talk in Singapore.
Only China with such special trust on Singapore - will China entrust Sovereignty to Singapore.

(2) And China also entrust Singapore to bring ASEAN-China together when Singapore play the role of ASEAN Chairman last year - to bring maritime exercise between China and ASEAN as well as many initiatives to make China closer to ASEAN.

So don't make any wild comments when you know nothing about Singapore and China relationship as well as Singapore and US relationship.

Both China and US - know who are true friends and who are artificial friends.

(1) China offer us Hainan Island (the highly classified and top secret nuclear submarine base) --- demonstrated the high level of trust by China Government in Singapore Leaders. 推心致腹。

And Singapore and China Leaders will be signing various MOUs in the coming summit between Singapore and China.

(2) US offer top notch military assets like F16, F15SG, F35s to Singapore - for our defense needs.
And US trust Singapore will safeguard its military secret and not betray US.

Singapore also will not betray ASEAN centrality
 and interests.

Singpaore speak the truth with conviction - that hope to bring out the best possible wholesome outcomes - not apple-polishing.

When come to the crunch - if China and US really want to smash each others up ---- Singapore will work to the last minute, to the last ounce of strength and resources --- to pull the 2 mammoth Elephants apart with Hercules strength - and will try our best to stop a WW3 between the 2 SuperPowers whatever it takes.

Singapore Government and Singapore can truly conform and bring out the "true spirit" of our foreign affair principles :-

"Friends with All.
Adversaries with None.
Forge Mutual Benefits with Win-Win Outcome."

Not when someone plagarise our above principles --- but unable to live up to the true spirit of the prinicples.

PM Lee:
"How China performs its prominent global role and how the international community adjusts to China’s growing influence, will determine whether all of us, and all our countries, can enjoy continued peace and prosperity.”

Our peace and prosperity depend....NOT on China's performance in the B & R projects....but on how US treat the rise of China. Yes it depends ENTIRELY on the USA.

If the USA use military actions to stop the rise of China....our peace and prosperity will be destroyed overnight...to be replaced by war and death.

Yes. We will be killed as collaterals...in the US war with China.

I tend to agree with you that SG peace, prosperity and stability depends on how US respond to China's development.

BRI serves to decouple from relying on US markets and also to prevent choke points at Straits of Malacca in times of conflicts. If US can't win a trade war, the next move to bring her down is to find trouble in SCS.

SG will be forced to choose between supporting US by providing military logs support or against China economic suffocation, no easy way out.

Anyways, it's in the best interest for all to diverse it's reliance on US for economic and military leadership. Economic Cooperations and Partnership is better than going for Wars with the usual partners in crime.
