Can Singapore please get someone who has the personality to attend to dignitaries visiting Singpore.. I saw her on TV garlanding medals to Award Winners. As usual with her traditional trade mark she was just too short and look awful to garland the winners. Someone has to rush to assist her. Am sure there are many who are more presentable to attend to dignitaries. It gives some the impression that Singapore is Muslim country

Singapore is a Country that must value diversity.
The look is not important.
The value system that we present - is more important.

President Halimah is our first Lady President.
She is also representing the Malay Community.
She work very well with our Government and presented our National Interests and Friendships with foreign dignitaries very welll.

We must respect that.

In retrospect --- we are lucky that Singapore did not get a President that are constanly in logger head with the Government Cabinet --- else we will suffer a political deadlock that we seen in :-

(1) Sri Lanka - where the President and Premier are in loggerheads - that result in an intelligence lapse - as both are not talking and sharing intelligence - that cause terrorists to exploit the rift - causing 200 over death and 500 over injuries in war-like torn bombings and fire-fight.

(2) US - that result in frequent budget shutdown - due to 2 political parties polarisation.

Ricky Lim I dont think that is the view of the Majority. She has to work with the Govt because it LHL who lifted her into the Istana with a 7T forklift. Also she is not an elected :Presideht.

She is supposed to be elected - except her competitors did not qualified based on the new criteria.

Given the background development - ISIS ideologism proliferation & the more hostile neighbor that will harp on the issue of race and religion - her Presidency is timely - as she will be the most appropriate right role model and figurehead for the Muslim community.

Public will not know the bigger environment that is simmering and the backend pressure that are fermenting.

Imagine we have a hot-headed of chinese origin who is constantly at loggerhead with our Government Cabinet against the backdrop of :-

(1) ISIS ideologism of a caliphate, championing jihad - inspiring the muslim community.

(2) A hostile neighbor championing the malay right

--- but we have a chinese figurehead locking horn with the Government --- while ISIS ideologies is festering ---- how can we ensure that terrorism will not break out in Singapore --- without a Muslim moderate figurehead to keep the situation intact?

Ricky Lim The whole of Singapore knows that LHL doesnt want another Ong Teng Cheong in the Istana. That is why it has to be a Malay candidate.. Constitution amended and Mak Cik is the only qualified Malay candidate available. There are a few other suitable Malay candidates available but it seems wasnt qualified. She is not elected President. The first time in Singapore history.

I guess there are 2 intent :
(1) Malay and muslim candidate make sense at this time - based on the above background.

(2) 2 powerbase - that will lockhorn - is also another consideration - I guess.

Looking at what happen in Sri Lanka and US --- i feel that we are lucky to have averted a very bad scenario :-
- ISIS threat
- hostile neighbor up north threatening us - and a hot headed figurehead whacking our Government internally.

---- What do think will hapeen to Singapore and Singaporeans now?

A President need to work closely with the Prime Minister and the Cabinet --- if the whole Nation want to move forward progressively.
Because a President need to be the top diplomat to represent Singapore's National Interest when dealing with foreign diplomat.
Imagine a President is an Opposition to the Government - and start to badmouth the Singapore Government to foreign diplomat that will hurt Singapore's National Interest?

Or imagine a President keep interfering to the functioning of the Government institutions?

A President must not be like Opposition in a Parliament - to play the antagonist role to the Institution.
This is the role of MPs in the Parliament.

Else it will move Singapore backward and not forward.

For this issue, actually I want to discuss this long time ago - but no opportunity.
Now this is a good time to bring it up.

Ricky Lim How did the other Malay candidates failed to qualify. LHL knew there were only a handful of Malay candidates available. So amend the consitituion in such a way that other Malay candidates are not qualified and accomodate Mak Cik. Had LHL not amended the constitution and Mak Cik stood against the other Malay candidates I bet you she is in NTUC today. This is where she belong and not the Istana.

Georgie Lee - I doubt Government will just amend something to let in one candidate - as far as I know how the civil service work and how the Singapore Government works.

But not surprising public will tend to look at one scenario and make such conclusion given the current outcome.

Government usually amend policies looking far into the future and looking at the bigger pictures - and not just to fix some candidates.

Many years ago, our Soveriegn Fund is less than $200 to $300 billion - now it has grown beyond $1 trillion - revising the qualification criteria make sense.

We can see from the outcome of one group of politicians who have never handle $100 million projects --- mess it up and we lose $33 million.

This is my understanding of how Singapore Government works.

In fact the above incident could have spur the Government to amend the qualification criteria --- for the President post that are safeguarding the whole Country's reserve and wealth. 全国的财产。

I have no problem of an elected President - as I am not against an elected President - but a qualified one and a one that don't play the opposition role as MP.

President role and opposition role must not be mixed up and got confused - causing lockdown or lameduck in Governance as seen in Sri Lanka and US.

A President can cause huge problem to the whole Government (because of the role and the authoritative position he/she hold) - as oppose to opposition in Parliament (where one opposition don't cause that type of damage of a President --- you will need 50% of opposition to cause the damage of a President).
