REACH - charging plastic bags for supermarket - may cause Country-wide hygiene problem

(1) When plastic bags are charged, people will stop using plastic bags to wrap their liquid waste and solid waste - and will instead throw their liquid waste and solid waste down the rubbish chute.

(2) This will cause a big hygiene problem nationwide.
- Liquid waste when thrown down the rubbish chute without the plastic bags - will cause unbearable stench emerging from the rubbish chute.

- Cockroaches, rats, ants etc will infest the rubbish chute causing big hygiene problem.

- Observe that in one chute where 1 or 2 household throw their liquid waste down the rubbish chute - unbearable smell emerge from the rubbish chute.

- Town council cleaners got to spray the whole rubbish chute with water - and despite doing so, the smell still linger.

- Also notice that the water in the rubbish chute - will cause problem of mosquitoes laying eggs inside the rubbish chute - causing dengue fever.

- Thus without "proper thought through" and mindlessly increase the price of the plastic bags --- it may introduce a Country-wide hygiene problem :-
(a). where rodents, cockroaches etc may trigger infectious diseases and even health epidemic - if many households start throwing liquid waste and solid waste down their rubbish chutes without bagging them in plastic bag.

(b) strong stench and terrible smell will cause those household staying at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and even 4th floor - to suffer from having to tolerate unbearable smell, as well as residents that walk past the 4 rubbish chutes in each HDB block.

(c) Town council cleaners will need to incur longer cleaning time per each housing block - and could translate into higher town council charges on residents.

(d) Cleaners will have to spray water to each rubbish chutes more often ---- that can cause mosquitoes to breed as more breeding ground arise in the rubbish chute - and may cause dengue fever to spike.

(e) Pest control companies will have to spray insecticide more often per each HDB block - polluting the air more frequently and increasing the pest control cost --- and again impose higher cost to residents.

(3) To conclude, those people who champion the charging of prices to plastic bags --- will eventually have to bear the responsibilities if hygiene and health problem befall the Countrywide ---- without a "proper thought through" ---- by solving the plastic problem - but causing big hygiene problem.

This should be implemented everywhere immediately. And the charge should be on a ‘per bag’ basis.

Lau Lan Chu Why! That's your problem! Basically, why should poor Singaporeans double pay for plastic bags in Fairprice supermarkets?! No one will stop you if you want to go protect the environment, but you don't have to force poor Singaporeans and everyone to do so! !!!! That's ridiculous! Plastic bags?! It is only tokenism!

Other countries like UK and Australia supermarkets charge around 50 cents per plastic bag for your purchase, BUT they quality of their bags is very good and can be used for the next purchase. So in my opinion, if our local supermarket wants to charge more, they must ensure that the quality of the plastic bags improve. Currently, we cannot blame the cashier for using mkore than one bag for the heavy purchases, as they worried that the thin plastic bag cannot withstand the weight of the customer purchase. I tried to re-use the NTUC plastic bag, but there are holes when the bag are being re-used.

In future, we have to pay for the plastic bags to dispose the rubbish. Pay and pay, and pay more for the rising cost of living....

Always want to claim to be first in everything but for this practice we are way behind time. "3rd" world country like China have been doing this for years.
Go to trade show to pick up some useful bags. They are foldable and convenient, my kid always has one ready in his bag. This is pertaining to supermarket.
Is there any better way at hawker centres for takeaway? Some are already charging 20 or 30 cents.

To reduce, reuse N recycle is ccgood,ce d certainly however, will see another problem coming up, with the reduction of these bags, can forsee that much of our trash is not going to be packed and thrown away. There might be a big problem of loose trash strewn all ccover place, spillages, etc. Any one has idea how to address this?

To reduce, reuse and recycle, are certainly positive ways to saving our environment. However, we might see another problem coming up. With the reduction of these bags, much of our trash, rubbish would not be packed in bags and thrown away. It would be another big problem if the disposals are not handled properly. Plenty of such loose trash, spillages, etc would be strewn all over place resulting in another disastrous mess affecting our environment. Such practices have to be curbed as well.

There's no need to use supermarket bags for trash disposal. There are biodgradeable plastic bags available in supermarkets for a couple of Dollars for a big fat roll of them.
Reply12h
Yee Adeline
Dennis Heath don't think they are using the biodegradable plastics either. If they had wanted, it would have been initiated long ago. There is another article on biodegradables by some experts.

This is ridiculous, if they talking about earth savings , then don't pack all fruits and vegetables individually. In fact in ntuc plastic bag all are lousy quality which can easily be tear. Those who say good for this campaign are all fake !!! Use your common sense, we can never know when we are going to ntuc. U expect me to carry a bag all day long ? If i would do my regular marketing ( as i have a big family ) u expect me to carry a Santa Claus bag or alibaba bag ? In fact these plastic bag cost only $ .000000 cents. Why should they charge the customers ?

For your information, ntuc products are not cheap AT ALL , the ntuc supermarket is meant for the citizens. So please don't name yourself as ntuc fairprice ((unfairprice) !!! Should be suitable. please stop your stupid ideas for charging here and there.

Netizen please don't be fooled by those ppl who says good to this campaign. Cos everything they think and talk is about $$$$$$$$

Those ready packed fruits and vegetables are even rotten and under size . This is the one and only kaisu supermarket.
Moreover the link points we collected on our card , have to be expired ? Then what's the POINT ? NTUC UNFAIR PRICE

If no more NTUC plastic bag, how is the average household going to bag their trash?
LikeReply13h

For hygiene purposes (prevent rats invasion), we have to bag our trash before dumping into chutes/bins. Many of us use the plastic bags from NTUC for that. Otherwise we will have to go buy plastic bags for that purpose (not aware of any other alternatives). Amount of plastic bags consumed is still the same in the end! Charging for plastic bags at NTUC is simply making NTUC look good but shifting the problem to some others down the line.

Almost everyone clear their dinner left-overs into a plastic bag before disposal. Imagine everyone start dumpling their leftovers into their HDB chutes and bins without plastic bags.

Boycott NTUC Fairprice!

But seriously, these clowns at NTUC and Zero Waste haven't deeply thought about all the possible downstream issues of this initiative. The bagging and disposal of trash in homes using plastic bags for better efficiency, cleanliness and hygiene cannot be disregarded and as far as I know, there are next to no other alternatives given the current design and process of garbage disposal for a vast majority of Singaporeans.

Bye, Fairprice. Yr price is not cheap, going sheng siong. Need the bags for trash. End of the day those consumers whom used trash bags to bag their refuse would still need to buy those black colour trash bags if unobtainable from supermarkets. It is just another disguise of transferring costs to consumers. Don't tell me you will donate all these monies save to charities forever? Slowly when memories faded, it will just be collected as profits into your pockets.

Here's an even better idea: Charge $0.20 for each plastic bag but give a $0.50 rebate for those who bring their own bags. That would be a genuinely sincere social initiative that NTUC can pioneer for all businesses to follow.

Btw, most of us would not want to see this initiative becoming a money spinner for the supermarkets N vendors. The amounts accumulated may not be negligible after all, and there are those who called for an increase, pls don't turn a good cause into some money churning generator. Thanks.
