(1) Supermarket plastic bags are dual-used - to carry groceries and to be used as wrapper for liquid waste and solid waste.

(2) Now by charging the plastic bags - customer will refrain from using plastic bag for shopping - and this mean there will be less purchase in supermarket.

(3) In addition, town councils will have to brace for household throwing liquid waste and solid waste down the rubbish chute without using plastic bag to wrap and tie them up.

(4) The possibility of hygiene problem to HDB flats and private household may rise --- and could aggravate the problem of rodents, cockroaches, ants etc.

(5) Town councils will have to brace for more hygiene problem and cleaners will have to work extra hard to clear liquid and solid waste that are scattered all over the place in the rubbish chute.

Plastics etc found along the beaches are all washed ashore from the sea. So all ships at sea should stop throw them into the water. This is a concerted effort and maybe the UN and our MPA should work together to find a solution.

Hmm... I often bring a shopping bag out to reduce the need for plastic bags and i recycle items frequently using the blue bins. But i have a thought. Can someone tell me, how are we going to contain our trash to throw in HDB where the rubbish chute is at common area? Buy plastic bags from SKP?

I will look like I shoplifted without a plastic bag.
I also will need to throw refuse at HDB flat using plastic bag right? Town council says sgd500 fine for duping without first bagging them.

It has BEEN YEARS before they take actions - and FAIRPRICE is probably the largest consumers of plastic bags in Singapore. Would they be prepare to comment on how many tonnes of LDPE bags they are using a year?

While the education has create awareness about the environment especially the use of plastic, more need to do done as a whole then just the initiatives by NTUC if there is going to make any difference.

NTUC should also looking into their packaging and not just use if plastic bags.

I also wonder why it has to be pay for the plastic bag. Perhaps the "you want you pay culture". To encourage and support on this initiative there should be incentive like discount to customers who bring their own bags. Afterall, there will be savings and benefits to NTUC with the reduction.

I hope that business that wants to drive such initiatives should consider this feedback and stop adding additional cost to the customers. End state you have more to lose when customers to buy from other supermarket.

Why can't they supply bio-degradable plastic/non-plastic bags? But make the bags thicker so that they don't tear so easily when we bag our groceries please. Many of us use these bags for household rubbish. Personally I don't mind paying 20-30 cents per bag if these bags are more useful/sturdy for transporting groceries, and then become our household trash bags.

Those Singaporeans who are poor should not be made to pay for Fairprice plastic bags.

Now, how to "bag the rubbish" before throwing away the rubbish??? Good luck to HDB cleaners & waste-truck workers. Time to switch to shopping at Giant & Sheng Siong...

First NTUC give you 10cts discount for bringing own bag, now take 20cts from you if you take their GOLD BAG. Hope other supermarkets will not follow. Should not shop at this 7 places if you want bag.

Previous trial has already indicated that 10 cent per bag had scheme failed. Wondering if it's just a way to just make some quick bucks. Imagine each customer bought 3 bags, and there's 10,000 customer a day. That's an additional $3k profit per day multiple by 30 = $90k profit. Wow.
