(1) Trump global trade war against many of its trading partners - will harm both ways.
(2) It increase the production input cost to its US business, high tariff will cause higher imported price of the goods for US consumers.
(3) Both China and India that are targeted by Trump's tariff war - will also be hurt.
(4) But China and India can take refuge on the RCEP multi-lateral trade deal - that have a bigger market of US$32 trillion GDP - much more than US market of US$19 trillion.
(5) Thus there is urgency for both China and India to expedite and lead the RCEP negotiation into its conclusion by this year - to cushion the impact of trade war by Trump-led US.

The trade war will escalate into a full scale cold war. China could do NOTHING... to stop the US from launching an all-out attack on China...to stop China from overtaking the US.
This is unavoidable.
Xi is now busy meeting China's partners...strategic partners ... doing important things to improve the economy of China, improving the economy of the strategic partners and to improve the life of their people.
Xi has yet to confirm that he will meet Trump at the G-20 summit in Japan...a clear indiation that ...to him, there is nothing he could do...to stop the US from launching a cold war against China. Xi has accepted ...the inevitable.
Better for him... to do something useful...than to waste time on the trade war... just like if an apple had turn bad...it it foolish to waste time and effort ... trying to make the bad apple edible. It is better to cook Dim Sum for meal... to replace the bad apple.
Of course, Xi has taken actions to deal with the cold war...(eg getting the strategic partners to help make the world a little better...) are direct and effective actions to counter the effects of the cold war.
