(1) "Protecting workers, not jobs" --- is a very powerful message when commensurate with good outcome of securing jobs for workers that are looking for jobs or who have been displaced or retrenched.

(2) It is an inspiring and confident message to the workers.

(3) All the more, the job machinery in producing jobs must be at its best to ensure the message is both achieve in words and outcome.

(1) This sentence alone (protect workers with good jobs and good income) = will almost guarantee continue Governance (all else being equal).
(2) No other message can be more effective than this one - because it ensure "good standard of living" and "close social equality and income gap" among the citizens.

LKY emulate to be Switzerland, but his son emulate to be India. Everyone has a different dream.

Wonder did Switzerland also signed a CECA with India to allow in unlimited quota Indians of any qualifications for its success.

神仙难赚印度钱。Met few of their PhDs locally only so far only one is knowledgable at least technically and humbly share his knowledge with the other local half who is more knowlegeable in materials.
You go to India for trade show, they steal your empty boxes... asked for tips. They try to be smart but they are what we call 小崇明, trying to compare prices with a material that is made Chromic free and one that has all the hazadous comtaminations to both health and environment.
When 3M India lost a business their 3M Indian claimed that the competiive product is physically inferior but chickened off when asked for the test report of their test. I have news for you 3M India, that material is from the same source as yours, only thing is you put it on a 3M core, same as for aerospace indirect materials such as your 3M232....Ended up HP India has to cancel order from competition and got ripped off by the Indians until today.

Just like importing goods from 3rd world countries cheap and sell it locally to make a profit while the good quality local food are left to rot and then exclaim "the local produce do not have the fragrances of the imported and we have to leave them on the shelves and the ones that rots let it continue to rot if they are not sustainable on the shelves, somebody who can afford the better and higher value ones on the shelves they can always pick them up if they can afford".

Why "protect workers, not jobs", when BOTH must be protected. A worker is called a "worker" because he/she has a job. If he or she does not have it, he/she is an "unemployed". The workers of Singapore have every right, after electing the governing party, to expect the Government to put in place fair employment policies, to protect them, and their jobs. They must not be unreasonably terminated in their employment, unjustly retrenched under the guise of "restructuring", downgraded their pay, or denied career advancement. The Government must fight for the just causes of workers, and also ensure job replacements will never be a problem. This means good and effective employment policies.

What it really means:

Protect the worker, not the job = We will regularly upgrade your skills but if you lose your job to a cheaper foreigner, that's your business

Protect the worker AND the job = We will keep your skills relevant and make sure you don't lose your job to cheaper, talentless foreigners
