"To address those who are saying that my perpetrator is now a victim, all I will say in response to that is I do genuinely hope that he is receiving the proper support he needs to rehabilitate, and that the unnecessary online harassment towards him and his loved ones will stop," she said.

"He does not deserve to be bullied online by trolls, and he definitely does not deserve to have his punishment (meted) out by anyone on the Internet - including me."

She reiterated her view that the perpetrator's punishment was too lenient, but said that whether the case would be re-opened was up to the university's review committee.

"Petitions or online opinions will not decide his punishment, and therefore I think it is time to step away from the discussion of what people think should be done to him, and step into the discussion of how we can improve our current society," she said.

Now these statement are more balanced, objective and rational.

A person who commit an offense (except for very serious crime like rape, murder, drug trafficking, bomb, firearms etc) will need to ensure :-
(1) Deterrence is adequate (Authorities are in the best position to decide - taking into account all mitigating factors).

(2) Rehabilitation must be part of the equation (if the offenders are remorseful and have a high chance of rehabilitation) --- else the social cost and economic cost to the Society as a whole is huge ---- Society will have to pay a heavy price to prison him, feed him and his family when he has no chance to rehabililtate and other undesirable consequences.

(3) Adequate emotional and supporting care for victim.

If all the above 3 angles are covered --- it will be a more wholesome solutions to tackle such crime.

Unless the case is re-opened, this criminal case is far from closure. A crime is a crime! Upskirt photos jailed for months, filmed woman showering scot free with warning?? What kind of sentence is this?? Isn't our society based on justice and equality (our pledge) ?? Just because nicholas lim is nus??

If someone here say "a crime is a crime" - go strictly by the book, by the law 法外无情 - 包青天。
Don't take into account mitigating factors, don't take into account rehabilitation, then very simple :-

(1) Offender charge in court - fine and imprisonment.

(2) Victim also break the law by :-
- abusing Police, AGC, NUS with vulgar abusive languages posted online.

- publishing the name of offenders for online vigilantism and shaming as well as causing harassment to the offender whole family who are innocent parties but suffer from the harassment --- and break the law of doxxing

--- fine and imprisonment.

Both break the law - "a crime is a crime" - and both must be fine and imprisoned.

This will ruin 2 promising lives.
Is this the result you want to see?

You want the Society to bear the huge burden - of Social cost and Economic cost?

Ricky, well said.

Our society of fast pace tense city life has become one lack sympathy & benevolent to see thing with wider perspective, only black or white. Mob instinct demanding blood & lynch is natural response to crimes like in a war zone.

One day when they or theie love ones make some silly mistake, and a kind being told:"i know you are wrong, but i forgive in hope you can change for a better one. Perhaps they will then understand life has a deeper meaning, and start to learn how to forgive gracefully.

The root cause of entire problem is the new age of high information impact to our vulnerable society, aggravated by unacceptable bad handling of NUS not bother to follow up closely with victim to blow up the case.

Perhaps one day when she make some silly mistake (we all did along our life) and a kind being whisper gently: "I know you are wrong, but I forgive you for the hope you can change to a better one."

Then she will truly understand the real meaning of forgive & forget. Now its just a satisfaction of getting what she desire, an eye for an eye, but she will not able to fully (understand) forgive & forget.

Whereas Nicolas & his family has paid a collateral painful price of great anxiety not knowing what the highly publicized saga will snowball to, involving much powerful VIP, doxxing, alleging his family powerful influence over police, with angry public demanding blood.

Still Nicholas should appreciate the given 2nd chance as its better than the eternal scar of going to jail, mixing with real hard core criminals & a permanent destroyed future. Time will heal & people forget.

IMO, even he can bear the shame to continue attend study in NUS, i highly doubt his mind can be normalized again. Deep in, it might fill with fear, anxiety, shame, guilt & anger/hatred.

Hopefully NUS besides closely supporting the victim that might be still struggling with trauma & new gain attention, also provide sufficient follow up counselling to the perpetrator to really change for a better one instead of creating another victim out of perpetrator.

Otherwise, its a time bomb - either inward self destructive or outward revenge. Either or both is very harmful & defeat the purpose of rehabilitation.

This is the message that i have been driving at at the very beginning when the 1st outburst emerged.

But it was drown by emotion and anger - and fail to see the bigger picture.

Thus 3 angles must be look at :-
(1) Deterrence - punishment to deter crime. (戒律)
(2) Supporting care - for victim. (大慈)
(3) Rehabiliation - for offenders with high chance of rehabiliation. (大悲)

And adjust this parameters to achieve the right "Equilibrium"。

(1) 戒律 - Morality, Punishment to ensure right behavior.

(2) 大慈 - Emphatise, kindness to console and heal the victim's heart and mind.

(3) 大悲 - Compassion and grieving on the wrong the offender has done and the subsequent pain he will have to suffer -- and if he has thoroughly repented - will deserve a new life.

Thats true and its the fate of any whistle blower against companies and institutions has to bear.

She will no longer be given the same fair opportunities that every person would receive in life.

The justice system has failed her, Nus has failed her.

All we can hope for is that her family has a business to employ her as seeking employment elsewhere is impossible.

As for Nicholas Lim the pervert, his name will forever be in the records of Internet Inc. for eternity as a sex offender even though no criminal records on him.

Nicholas can still pursue a career in the porn industry if he wants to. Video himself in shower and post it online. Im pretty sure some old women would pay to view.

Didn't she blow it up after waiting the official investigation result?

What would we do on such a traumatic past? I think we won't take any shower if we don't feel safe anymore.

and what good would come from a company that are not saving their employee from such sexual harassment?

Ouh...c'mon. Move on already. Just make sure the punishment is more severe then the current one so that to remind other sick peverts not to even think of doing it. Mistakes already been done and that idiot got what he deserves. Hope the consequences of his actions will make a deep dent in his life. I know it will affect her mentally n emotionally but atleast nothing worst then that ever happen to her. Forgive that guy and move on. The journey is still long. The rule of law is an unqualified human good. However, its only good enough when the state achieved its maturity to put it into practice. In simple terms, there must be checks and balances, fairness and accountability and above all, those in authority should not have an unfettered discretion.

Ms Baey was right to raise the issues of her case, and for the larger good as well. Never fear to voice out, when all else fail, or the actions taken just do not match up. I believe she has positively initiated the changes to come. She is right also to speak up that we must stay focused, and not harass the offender, and/or his family.
