(1) Interesting that some netizens argue against death penalty for drug trafficking - and don't think drug abuse is as serious as murder that justify the death penalty.
(2) Murder kill one, drugs hurt hundreds, thousands - and affect not only the drug abusers, but also their families and the Society at large.
(3) During opium war in China, the whole Country is bogged down by opium and make many people in China hook on drugs and destroy many lives and families.
(4) Currently, in US and UK by legalising drugs - the drug abuse has go out of control for both US and UK.
(5) In the UK, 1 million people are addicted to over-the-counter (OTC); that’s significantly more than the number addicted to illegal drugs.
(6) US has lose its fight over drug addiction. Opioid Overdose Crisis.
Every day, more than 130 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the total "economic burden" of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.
(7) Thus drug traffickers will deserve the death penalty as much as murderer if not more deserving.
(8) Malaysians should respect Singapore law and refrain from trafficking drugs to Singapore - if want to avoid the death penalty.

Maybe we can increase the weight of drugs smuggled that attracts the death penalty.

Death penalty should only be reserved for murder related offense, a life for a life.
Drug addicts are alive, not dead. Drug trafficking can ruin a country and Duterte has many supporters. Because the general population is against drugs
How to punish fair without capital yet address the menace of drugs?
Lower 1 step. Mandatory life imprisonment for drug trafficking.
Those who are mules and get certificate of cooperation lower imprisonment to 20 years.…See More

Leelynn, no death penalty to drug traffickers ? Ooo, that's a very bad idea n wrong sympathy feeling. It'll only open a floodgate for these useless peoples to come into Singapore with more drugs. They know they wont be hang and can stay in Singapore with free foods n lodging. Than what ? Give them PR status ? Drugs destroy many families in Singapore n around the world. Death to drug traffickers is a fair punishment.

We should be firm to uphold our own S'pore's law & order, no two-ways about it otherwise we'll lose respect from others in our legal system.

Well done Mr Shanmugan. You stood for Singapore. Lets see what they have to say.
Georgie Lee
K.w. Chan The trouble is they are not like Singapore. Even our Law Minister Shanmugam has come out to speak against drug offenders/traffickers in response to this Pannir's case. They must learn to respect our law.

They (Malaysia) cried foul now. Then catch the drug mules before they enter into Singapore. Period.
Georgie Tan
Lynn Lee, are you sure drug addicts are still alive? Beside that families are destroy by drug addict as they need ton of money to buy it. SG law must stay regarding what Malaysia has done to their law. Malaysia can turn their country to all drug addicts who care. Some Malaysians or Flakers are just out to cause trouble for SG in whatever we do.
Niko Nishi
Malaysia can do well if they have the capability and competency to catch the drug traffickers before they come over to our side of the causeway. That will solve their problem of wanting to spare these drug traffickers the death penalty.

Hang him without further consideration. Singapore shall always be DRUG FREE country.. Hanging will stay forever in this country for drug mules.

Dear Sir, It is about clemency. It is not about going unpunished. We have a very nice neighbour up north selling us cheaper water to let all of our citizens able to quench our thirst. How about listening to their plea first. If you put a person away for a very very long time, he too cannot traffic and harm people. It is still a very severe punishment. We as human should not take it lightly to remove a life unless alternative is unavailable. If an offender is remorse and willing to turn over a new leaf, can we not give him a second chance. After all he will not be able to see freedom for a long long time. Please exercise goodwill for the sake of our children and children children. We need to live in harmony with our good neighbour. God will bless us all.

No...they (malaysia) think we bow to them. Their head will swell and grows arrogant to demand more of singapore...especially Dr M

Fully agree with the Law Minister. If there is no deterence, then anyone can just commit the crime and seek clemency. So what is the point of having the law?
Pher Kim Huat
Correct, for those who had seen or gone through how the families of drug addicts are going through with broken hearts (especially the parents) then you can understand why S'pore is so strict on drug offenders as not only they cause serious negative impact on family lives but also on the whole society and country..

It is good to know that Singapore differentiates itself from other "developed" states on the issue of narcotics. I am surprised that though clearly a secular country, Singapore hews closely, in these cases, to Islamic law: all crimes against the larger interest of society and its true integrity must be punished. Minister Shanmugam needs to be praised for strictly upholding the law.
Still, some flexibiliy in the case of clear mules like this poor Malaysian-Indian would be welcome too because the real kingpin culprits are still out there even eluding the Malaysian authorities too. Also given that, in practice, Asean has a culture different from that of the West; some adjustments would definitely be healthy !

You are taking a life! Considering his age he could have been rehabitated and contribute back to the soceity in another way. We use to laugh at the Chinese jurisdiction system and we are no difference if we insist to kill him for the sake of proving our rights.......People make mistake

So much arguments.
Solution ?
Some say death
Some say no death
...
Very thorny drug issue.
Who started drugs in the first place

No leniency....everyone cannot be above the law. Should not be pressured by any foreign countries request. If leniency is given then all ex drug traffickers should not be hanged.
KS Lim
By the fact that it is death penalty to bring drugs to Singapore, people still do it for whatever reasons. If not strictly curb, Singapore prison has to dig deeper and wider to house all those drug traffickers, not to mention still have to feed them for very long period. On the other hand, it also sad to see life need to be executed this way.

This Singapore Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam's face and baldy head looks exactly like a Sime Darby Estate rubber tapper or perhaps like a rubber estate division Mandore.
Colin Tan
Sir, dun need to explain so much just DO what our country's law dictates to minimize social ills in our country. Those MY ppl who oppose death penalty should tell their country men to traffic illicit drugs in their own country where these criminals shall not be subjected to this HARSH penalty when caught.
Jacky Syarief
This Thamby Minister Shanmugam not long before said Malaysia and Singapore cannot be separated as akin to Umblical Cord? Why must this "Childish" Thamby Shanmugam make so much noise whereas the rarely talk Lee Hsien Loong is very quiet and the Halimah Yacob too is so Silent? This Thamby Shanmugam must always remeber that his Forefathers are also Rubber rubber tappers and working as Coolies under the British Malaya.
