(1) Safety timeout doesn't means abolish NS - because if we do - we will be invaded by someone with ill-intent.

And someone suggest we use defense money to pay our welfare benefits -- is as good as committing suicide.
Perhaps people have forgotten the WW2 - where the ancient Jap invaded Singapore - slaugther, machine gun, chop head, torture Singaporeans, rape women.
Those people who suggest no NS - should be drill through the WW2 documentaries.

(2) Safety timeout doesn't means no IPPT or jogging.
It is reviewing whether we are too rigorous, tempo too fast or too demanding - and whether it is sustainable.

Eg. some feedback that machine are used to measure whether "a push up" is counted - and the machine is too sensitive - that trainee need to do a perfect 90 degree arm push up and chest touch near the ground - to be counted as valid --- maybe need to review --- because human is difficult to achieve "perfection".

For eg., the machine sensor may detect the :-
(i) the last mini-ounce of strength
(ii) the most perfected machine verifiable "push up posture"
- before the machine count it as "pass".

Thus a soldier may have to do say 50 push up to pass instead of say 30 -
because 20 maybe counted as fail - due to the "imperfected" push up as verified by the machine sensor.

It end up many trainees who take the IPPT test fail - and need to go for remedial training.

Thus good to look into this.

Jogging is never rigorous, it's a form of running at a slow or leisurely pace. So it shouldn't be suspended even the regime is under review.
Reply2h
Ricky Lim
Goh Jon Hin - I have no privy to the review.
The jogging could have refer to the IPPT running test itself.

But the whole Army is not in a standstill.

I still see operational duty troops on duty - for e.g our F15SG still fly air drill patrolling the sky.

Our air-defense are still guarding the sky.

Our navy are still patrolling our water etc.

Only the training is on safety timeout pending review.

There are many reservists whom I know of are in air force and navy.

(1) If BG Lee sign on - then we don't have a PM Lee.
(2) If Admiral Teo sign on - then we don't have a DPM Teo.
(3) If MG Chan sign on - then we don't have a Minister Chan.
(4) If many MG, BG, Admiral, Colonel, Major, Captain sign on - then we don't have many CEOs, Chairman, Head of Department etc to helm the Organisations.
(5) If many pilots sign on - then we don't have many pilots fly the SIA, SilkAir, Scoots planes.

The solution is to have all regulars in the SAF. We will have a professional army and only people who wants it as a career are in it.

If we can afford to pay our ministers million dollar salaries, we can also afford a professional fighting force.

Jag Tan - A professional army - assume salary $5,000 a month - will have cost the Government S$78 billion a year for a 1.3 million standing army on salary only.

Are you willing to pay this amount of tax to have a professional army?

Singapore total budget government spending is S$80 billion a year.

Are you suggesting the whole Government budget spend on a professional army paying salary and nothing else?

Are you also suggesting Singaporean men become soldiers - but no one work in the Economy?

Aloysius' death was an unfortunate accident, nothing to do with jogging and certainly, it's incredulous to call it strenous.

We'll be so happy if there are so many FT kids and gurkhas coming in every year to fight for us. Or use common sense and look around himself, out of every 4 persons he see in the streets (uncles, aunties, school kids, FT workers included), 1 of them is involved in military? 😂😂😂

Jag Tan, Jack Sparroww - i don't have to prove to you whether the figure is accurate or off.
You can choose to believe it or not.
1st thing, you don't know our military strategy - and need how many troops.

PM Lee himself say that we have over 1 million troop (including standdown troop - not in reservist cycle)  - this means those active and in reservist cycle - half a million.
Those standdown out of reservist cycle - another half a million.

Note :- PR kids also need to serve NS.

Even for half a million troop (not counting standdown) - will cost S$30.3 billion per year in salary - about 40% of the whole Government budget for a professional army - can we sustain a regular army?

Ricky Lim there is nothing for you to prove. Your figures are obviously bullsh!t from dubious source. Lol 1.3m out of under 6m. 6m inclusive of elderly and late middle-age, kids, FT and.... women. One quarter of these will take GRAB to camp when mobilised.... Hahaha

The source is a Global military source (who tap the figures from Mindef) - and PM Lee himself speak publicly that we have over 1 million troop.

You obviously are not in NS and know nothing about Singapore military.

You do a mental count - you will find the source is very close to the truth.

And under Global Militarization Index - Singapore is the 2nd most militarised in the World - even surpass all the Superpowers - in terms of military density.

You can choose not to believe - but i conclude that you know naught about us - i suspect you are foreigner and have never trained under NS.

Every Singaporeans and PR kids male - will have undergo NS and trained in various form of weapons and military assets.

That is why Singaporeans and those trained in NS know is true or not -- but not you.

Do you know that even our PM Lee is a standdown reservist Brigadier General - which count to the standdown reservist cycle troop that make up the other 1/2 a million troop.
He can still command division of troops if a war break out as a Brigadier General.

You don't know we have exceeded millions of male?

Do you know what is the population of Singapore?

This decision for SAF to temporary suspend and implement a safety timeout of strenuous activity is the right path going forward and in fact, they should conduct an overhaul assessments of all their training methods long time ago. Let's be realistic, the individual physical condition of each soldier is different and cannot be forced across the board to perform as a standard expectation. Likewise, the mentality and experiences (or how well trained it might be) of each soldier also differ and as such expecting them to perform a job unsupervised can put a great risk not only to himself but to others too.

I can imagine worse can be for those who are really unfit and struggling to pass and can be fatal. i hope changes can be made to IPPT system that allows servicemen to take IPPT up to 5times a yr on their own timing and reward extra incentives to the best out of the 5 which also allow the others to fail....

I for one think that our NS is too long. Taiwan only 12 mths and SK is going to reduce theirs to 18 mths.

I wonder is it becos the OCS course itself is already 38wks. Adding in the BMT its almost a yr to train an officer. So everyone else has to serve longer NS because of these officers.

The onus is on each individual soldier to practice what have been taught and follow procedures. How does this initiative help with anything? The processes are already in place. We need to be serious. Can we afford to relax a bit amidst political tension in the region?

Aren't we putting ourselves at a higher risk? We are no longer as resilient as others. How will we or the younger generations defend SG then? Will the enemy be so considerate and be lenient?

Remember the oath... last three words..
'With Our Lives'...

We should not be jumping to conclusion and decide on such things irrationally. Do i respect SAF? I apologise that its a NO for me for what they failed to do for my case. But we have to take a step back, look at things and move forward rationally.

SAF military are getting soft and pampered nowadays. The era of social medias are giving undue pressure and stress to govt, authorities in tackling expectation and aspiration of societies. I've met nos of NS enlistees in SAF. They even admit the training rigours are not tough nowadays compare to days of their father nor uncles who served in past. Nowadays any incident/accident could not escape in limelight of public in this online, social media era. I served NS in early 80s. The 'tekan' regime and rigourous tough training is unexplainable. Push beyond limits. The mental, physical endurance of enlistees during that period nor earlier are exemplary. Even those matured ex SAF I met before know of incidents/accidents happened during that time but its closed case. Cause internet, hps nor social/online media non existance.
If we observed our regional neighbours m'sia, indonesia, thailand and world never heard of toning down military training rigours just because of unfortunate few accidents happened in their force. They're steadfast and tough. Its ingrained in their military force the risk factors they have to face. Spore.. sigh. Too sensitive to the furores / noise in social n online medias.
If not, in time of crisis/breakout our SAF soldiers will not be in physical and mental attributes the endurance factors to sustain in defence of homeland.

Do note.

The last 3 deaths out of 4 in the last 18mths involved our Sgp boys dealing within heavy equipment/vehicles, the safe operating of these must b improved IF the existing procedures hv flaws. How does stopping IPPT. etc. help?

Any unfriendly forces will perceive these actions as "irrational decision making by our generals"?

Or our current operating procedures r so bad that each time a life is lost, the SAF then decide to review them?
