With negotiation by the senior official workgroup in progress - i think we should be level-headed and keep calm while the process is on-going.

We need not be angry or feel slighted - but should stay cool and calm.
Only if we are cool and calm - can we find good solutions.
Anger and spiteful will worsen the situation - and will bring about worst outcomes.

I am very sure we will safeguard our National Interest - while working out an acceptable solutions to both the maritime and airspace.

We have a long runway and we can afford to be patient while working out resolutions in both issues that we can accept.

Singaporeans need not fret or be too worried about the maritime and airspace disputes that will go against our National Interests because International Laws are on our sides in case there are deadlock :-

(1) Maritime Port Limit -
(a) According to UNCLOS, if there is territorial disputes as to the water boundary - 12 nautical miles will be the default territorial boundaries.
But Singapore and Johore straits are less than 12 nautical miles - thus this clause will not apply to us.

(b) According to UNCLOS, if there is territorial disputes as to the water boundary are less than 12 nautical miles - by default the water boundaries will be divided into half and the middle of each half will be the territorial boundaries to each Countries.

Singapore will benefit from this clause.
Malaysia newly declared port limit and its naval intrusion - clearly breach this UNCLOS clause - as it enter more than half of the divided territorial water and come very near into our coast.

Thus Singapore has a good chance to win against Malaysia if this is brought into International Courts.

(2) Airspace management

- according to ICAO, Country hosting airports will handle airspace management for inbound and outbound aircraft to land and take off from its airports.
- it is not possible for another Country to manage the airspace as it has no visibiity into our inbound and outbound aircraft landing and taking off from our airports --- else it will cause collision.
- clearly the territorial boundaries between Singapore and Johor into our airports are too short - to handover the airspace control - before landing into our airports ---- and will be definitely a real air safety issue if we are not handling the airspace coming in from Malaysia. ICAO will not allow it.

Taking into account - Singapore airports are one of the busiest in the World where every aircraft take off and land by the minutes.

You think ICAO will let Malaysia meddle with their 10% flights and cause collision to 90% of international flights that they do not control.

--- If come into deadlock - a high possibility that all inbound and outbound aircraft coming from Malaysia will migrate in its entirety into Singapore FIR airspace management - and Malaysia airspace will have no flight to handle coming into and going out from Singapore.

So given the above scenarios and background ---- why are Singaporeans still fretting and worrying?
In both cases, Singapore has a much stronger cases than Malaysia who has much weaker cases.

In fact when coming to the worst scenarios - whereby if Singapore win the case on our Port Limit and Malaysia insist on sending their ships into our Territorial Water - under UNCLOS - we can use military forces against the intruding ships.

Since October 2014 when President Joko Widodo took office and called for tougher action against ship intrusion.
Among those sunk so far are boats from Malaysia (49 boats). Most were caught by a special maritime task force known as Satgas 115.

---
We can emulate what Indonesia did --- if come to the worst scenario ---- which we hope we don't have to use.

Sorry... you are not correct!
Started with ILS of Seletar! Set up and promulgated without 100% agreement from Malaysia. It will impinge on future developments of a neighbouring sovereign country! They didn’t respond from whatever correspondence didn’t mean agreement!
All our neighbour could do was ‘ defensive actions to thwart that!
ICAO delegated airspace ‘ control ‘ is not carte blanche for the controlling authority implement procedures that may compromise future developments of another.
This is opinion of a singaporean.

Right or wrong is debatable. What is fact we hv failed to protect our own sovereignty. Eddie is spot on on that.

Aren't their ships still not respecting our sovereignty? The fate of ILS / Seletar Airport .. suspended..indefinitely. Isn't that as good as dead?

Now, what are the "firm actions" we took so far? War cries, countless warnings and threats, an open mob - NATO. When it became obvious no one across the causeway has lost any sleep, we switched to FIRM understanding, patience and almost altruistic for our mutual good. My foot.

Any special mentions? Yes, we
bagged a "special giveaway prize" for THWARTING their 2-week old Restricted Zone. Should hv a public holiday for this.

Didnt respond is not consent is not 100% right. It most probably means they didnt bother to response, the In-Charge was on "holiday". It is not difficult at all to say something in the initial phase if you have anything to say in the RFC state. It has everything to do with Dr M coming late into scene.

Dr M does not work on win-win. HSK can save those words, as they shall be taken as an provocation to Dr M.

Chow Yoon Seng it is the most basic of courtesy that when the implementation of the ILS affects the the neighbour’s airspace, Singapore should approach Malaysia and inform accordingly and seek approval. This is what being good neighbours is all about. If Singapore fails to do that, then it just goes to show how arrogant Singapore is.

Breeke Lo I agree on the part that we hv failed to protect our own sovereignty. The lack of action from the coast guards to protect our borders... regardless of whether the ship is from Malaysia, if an unauthorised ship is plowing our waters, shouldn't the coast guard take action.

Wan Wan Better to be "bullied" with rules and regulations rather than having these rules and regulations yet liken to having none at all...all the time being taken for a ride if you are not of a certain skin tone.

I don't know who is the one getting more jialat jialat...the ones "suffering" in silence without a voice or the one while "suffered" yet can voice out.

Our ministers are NOT known to be not calculative or careless with self-interests, that I have no worry. 😂Conversely, it is this uncharacteristic ''humility" and so-called "win-win" passive stance that I am most worried.

Win-win type of deal ..is the ideal between neighbours. It is NOT realistic to expect win-win deals all the times.
More often than not...it is a win-lose deal..a zero sum game played by most big bullies.

In the case of Dr M...he want NO deals with Singapore...he want to show the world...he can do what he think is best for HIMSELF, for his ego and for improving his poor image (of losing all the time to LKY)

Win-win deals require GOODWILL between Singapore and Malaysia. Now Dr M has little goodwill for us.

Minister Heng expects too much… from the talks between top leaders ...and from the actions to be taken by the working committees ….to revolve the problems created by Dr. M.

If Dr M wants normal relationships with Singapore, he wouldn’t pick fights with Singapore immediate upon becoming the PM… He would act like good friends, good neighbours and good trading partners...having abundant goodwill in dealing with relationship problems that may arise from time to time….like all the previous PMs before him.

Minister Heng ...need to show firmness and resolve… in dealing with Dr M.

When a win-win deal is impossible, ...we must be practical ….be prepared for the worse outcome ...be ready for any eventuality.

Use the experience of our pioneer leaders ...who have dealt with Dr. M for over twenty years...in situations when Dr M don’t want a win-win deal.

To assume that Dr M want a win-win deal with us … is to expect too much from someone who has abundant ill-will for Singapore.
We will be at a disadvantage...and we will be disappointed...we will end up with a bad deal ...like HSR.

It is not only I who can see what Dr M is doing.

The Water agreement is a win-win deal ...accpeted by ALL previous PMs of Malaysia, ..yes all previous PMs including Dr M himself.

Dr M reopen a settled issue...to pick fight with Singapore...pure and simple.

Do not know your possibly close relation with mahatail that you ignored the facts that the water price increase was actually put forward to him, that he (your gracious mahatail) kept putting his impotent 2 x 4 into his own mouth when he kept increasing his demand with ill intentions amounting to the suspicion of a kickback request that our negotiators would not do as LKY was well alive, by doing so we will be subject further to his stupidity and lost our creditability worldwide and our corruption rating will point north to surpass your country many times.
