Actually, China and Japan's problematic relationship is not huge.
(1) It is the unhappiness of not acknowledging and resolving the historical war past.
(2) Dispute over the 5 islands.

Both issues are not survival threatening or life threatening for both Countries.
Nationalism and Ego - is the issue that manifest and magnify the unhappiness and conflict. Both issues are not insurmountable.

Trade, business, investment, travel, financial system etc are heavily intertwined between the 2 Countries.

Participating in many Economic Forum, Trade Forum, Political Forum - maintaining communication and dialogue - will prevent conflict from escalating.

The above are some positive development that can help to cool tension and maintain a more rational mind - that will prevent military conflict.

Moreover, both Countries have advanced development, advanced infrastructure, developed Economies - that will make military adventure less likely - as the stakes are too high.

It will take time to resolve the 2 issues - war past and island disputes (common to many Countries sharing close border). Cool mind and sound sense - can help to resolve it.

What has not been mention - is the geopolitical influence that both are quietly or openly contesting in - with regional Countries and the World Community. Friendly contest is helpful and provide vibrancy and diversity. Adversary contest - will be harmful.
