Protectionism will damage the multilateral system of trade and investments, and result in strategic rivalry between great powers that can destabilise the world, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) on Thursday (Apr 19).

Trump got to be very mindful of what happen in 1930s Deep Depression - where US levy tariff, trigger World Wide trade war - that eventually lead to World War 2.

Now look at the climate created by Trump - very serious trade and business damages -- and the mounting tension between the US and China.

Is it worth the strategic rivalry hiding under the cloak of so called "America First fair trade"?

There are collateral damages to US companies as well from Trump's trade move.

(1) Qualcomm supplied more than half of chipset sold to ZTE.
(2) Microsoft Corp provide software
(3) Intel Corp provide some components
(4) Acacia Communications Inc provide optical networking equipment
(5) Lumentum Holdings Inc
(6) Finisar Corp
(7) Oclaro Inc All these
US companies are badly hit by Trump trade move.
Qualcomm is the worst hit - and likely to retrench American workers.

If China learn from this trade war - and determine and successful to make its own chips or succeeded in buying other semicon chips from some other sources ---- Trump trade war will cause US business to lose US$11billion from this saga ---- and China customers will never come back.

Huawei has already succeeded in making all its semicon chips.
Huawei is also the most advanced in 5G chips - that surpass the US Qualcomm 5G chips.

So Trump may make a very serious strategic trade move --- that may cause substantial damages to US tech industries as well as hurting its business and jobs.

UPDATE 2-Qualcomm begins layoffs as part of cost cuts
18 Apr 2018
April 18- Qualcomm Inc has begun cutting jobs as part of its promise to investors to cut annual costs by $1 billion, the chipmaker said on Wednesday. Bloomberg, which first reported the layoffs, said the size of the job cuts is large enough that Qualcomm will have to file a WARN notice, or Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, with the state of California.

Look like US will hurt itself more than China (if even though China will also get hurt).

The U.S. sorghum industry called for an end to the trade dispute and expressed concern about the impact on established trade relationships that have taken years to build.
"This tit for tat has to stop, and talks to find reasonable and lasting solutions must begin, for the good of U.S. agriculture and the customers we have spent decades working to win as loyal buyers," said Tom Sleight, president and CEO of the U.S. Grains Councilv.

However, those countries and others in the region are small importers of sorghum. Vietnam has never imported U.S. sorghum and the Philippines imported just 19,000 tonnes in the 2016/17 season, according to USDA data.
China, by contrast, imported more than 5.2 million tonnes last season, nearly 10 times more than No. 2 importer Japan, the data showed.

--
US agricultural industry - may forever lose one of its biggest customer if Trump's trade war with China hardened ---- as no other Countries can absorb all the crops from US.

US agricultural sectors will be completely destroyed.

Now Trump got desperate --- and he is calling "allies" such as Japan, S Korea, Saudi --- to buy more US arms to cover all these trade war losses.

Ironically, Trump also hurt Japan and S Korea in trade.

The World have to be mindful that this trade war is not about US versus China.

It is about Trump starting the trade war against the whole World - and now China is the Country that dare to stand up to fight Trump trade war.

Trump trade war will cause sufferings and miseries to the Whole World, thus the World must not let Trump succeed in this trade war, in Trump's ideologies of protectionism and Trump's "America First policies and the rest of Countries last policies".

The World must cooperate to defeat Trump's protectionist ideologies.

Trump's supporters to help Trump's selfish, self-centred hidden personal agenda by even coining :-
(1) Cold war rivalry - trying to coin US past allies to his side to fight China in trade war - where in fact Trump is fighting the trade war with the whole World - causing the whole World to suffer.
(2) Some Trump supporters even try to fan the World to beware of "communism" to fool US past allies to his side to fight China in trade war.

So the World must not be fool by Trump - and must defeat Trump who want the whole World to bow to Trump's "America First, World last" policies.

Remember, Trump trade war - only want to benefit Trump to win his election to secure his seat as President.
Trump is not doing it for Americans - look at how US businesses, consumers suffer greatly now.

Trump is using the trade war against the whole World (not only with China) - to achieve his political ambition.

Thus the Whole World must unite and not let Trump succed in this trade war - to achieve Trump's selfish, self-centred agenda.

Trump's trade war --- must be resolutely, resoundingly defeated by the World --- so that Trump cannot further promote unilateralism, protectionist, ant-trade policies --- -that cause the whole World to suffer (including US businesses and consumers).

And the best defeat will be for US voters to vote Trump out !
