Which country in Asia bothered to hear what this clown has to say ? Is he trying to score point with LHL ? Or Gullible SG ppl ? Which Asian country got no domestic market except SG ? Why ask others to forgo their domestic market interest for SG’s external trade ? What crap is that teaching other countries that one has 12 million jobs available by opening up their markets ? Why would their vast domestic market open up for SG to sell its goods or take a middle man cut ? China, India, Indonesia n countries with domestic markets bigger than SG r going to have bilateral trade of 1 for 1 or to trade...See More

Interesting pre-digital economy views from you. I am sure gullible Singaporeans will agree. In case you are unaware, it is precisely because many of these countries' economies are "distorted" that open Singapore has managed to thrive as a middleman. Cheers!

Sly Zhuo , u may not b right. Regardless if it is pre or post digital, the snub by oz PM, a close western ally to plug into Sg’s Smart city programme upon the invitation of LHL recently speaks loud n clear. Sg ppl s not open. It is over regulated. Until corruption is completely stemmed out, (knowing human, it may never) by then it may b a century from now. A century of protectionism is more than enough to cripple Sg. China n India is the greatest example of protectionism. USA after ronal regan set the tone for free trade. All countries got to follow for fear of reprisal though some still dragged their feet. Trump terminated it n china now wanted to b a leader for free trade. The Chinese is not that generous. They will open up if the audit book favours china. If not, China will restrict what u can sell to its vast domestic market which can make any country n instant first world status. So u think countries with large domestic markets would give SG trade ?

Sg never has a choice. It’s domestic market or 2 million was n now 5 million was n is totally useless to any large population country to trade with.

It is very amusing to see of the comments here that say Countries with big domestic market don't trade and can do well economically.

This notion is flaw and dangerous.

Eg.
(1) Ancient China - with huge internal resources, manpower - without trade while relying on domestic market are not doing well.
(2) N Korea - where everyone can see now - without trade and relying on domestic market is not doing well.
(3) Russia - adopt trade and open up its Economy to do well.
(4) US is the largest Economy in the World - because its MNCs invest practically everywhere all over the World - to resource for material, manufacture goods at low cost market with lower labout cost, invest in overseas market to buy their products - and rely on trade to feed its large consumer market.
(5) The World supply chain are distributed all over the World in 195 Countries - in which each Countries are producing something that the World want.
Without trade, in this modern context, a Country who rely on domestic market - can barely survive.

So it is really amusing why some people have naive thinkings about trade.

Statistical facts have shown that for those Countries that have healthy export and import market are doing very well with high Economic growth.
(1) ASEAN previously are not so vibrant about trade - but once ASEAN open up their Economy for trade, ASEAN Economic growth are phenomenal - eg. Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand etc.
(2) Asia Pacific are flourishing because of opening up their Economy for trade.
China notably because of its trade has propel China to become the 2nd largest Economy in the World.
(3) With multi-lateral trade deals - TPP, and if RCEP is signed --- will make Asia Pacific the largest trade bloc in the World - overtaking the EU trade bloc.

So cannot understand why people here has opposite hypothesis about trade that has been proven ---- either they are influence by Trump or they are self-proclaimed keyboard experts in trade devoid of pragmatism.

Singapore has 35 FTAs signed - the largest number of FTAs signed in Asia.

And yet people without facts can proclaim who is not signing up trade pacts with Singapore. Very amusing .....

If trade is no good, which Countries are not scrambling to sign trade pacts?

Even Trump has to slap his own face - by wanting to rejoin TPP to save his agricultural sector - else his agricultural sector will fail - as US domestic market cannot absorb all the crops - and can only leave to rot.

2/3 of some of the crops in US are consume by China - and yet US want to fight with China with tariff.

Big Countries - don't trade can survive?
Facts say - my foot !
