N. Korea demands peace treaty for stopping nuke tests

ricky l
I think US, S Korea, China, Russia, Japan and the World should seriously give the Peace Treaty with N Korea a thought to replace the 1950s Korean Peninsula Armistice.
Let us analyse this and reason out this hypothesis :-

(1) N Korea being isolated will have a horrid picture of what US and S Korea will do to it - given the history of how Saddam Hussein of Iraq and how Gadaffi of Libya was executed and the brought down.

There is more urgency for N Korea to sign the Peace Treaty with the current President Obama Administration - as seen to be friendly to many Countries including its Adversaries - notably Iran - that have just concluded the Nuclear Deal.

I think the unpredictable election result may churn out a more uncompromising President that may harden their stand with N Korea and throw the whole Peninsula Korea into a war zone.

Thus it is legitimate and reasonable the worry of N Korea - to "request" for this Peace Treaty in exchange for nuclear deal and army exercise --- the purpose is to guarantee its safety.

(2) However, having say so, N Korea "demand" for a Peace Treaty in foreign affairs and diplomatic statement - is not so appropriate - because it sounds like "threatening" US and S Korea to accede to its demand ---- which diplomatically is not a "nice" way to communicate a request ---- because to gain a "win-win" solution - both sides must be "nice" to "request" for a "win-win" resolution.
Moreover, testing a nuclear devices to "demand" a Peace Treaty - against the International sanction - is internationally not acceptable - though the underlining intention to strive for peace is good.

Having say so US, S Korea, Japan, China and the World - has to know that N Korea is not like others which are more mature in handling and communicating diplomatic languages and handle sensitive foreign affairs delicately.

The "demand" which in fact is a "request" - though with good intention - is not handle delicately partly because N korea have been isolated for so long - and need to learn the rope how to make such a request that is acceptable.

Thus having consider the above, I hope exception can be made to give both "stick" and dangle a "carrot" to N Korea that - defying International sanction is unacceptable but consideration is given to the "good intention" to strive for Peace - for longing to have a Peace Treaty - that will ensure long-term peace for Korean Peninsula and end the decades of headache (I hope..).

If this Korean Peninsula affair is not handle carefully and more nuclear tests - and suddenly there is a nuclear accident which cause radiation contamination - what will happen :-

(1) N Korea itself will succumb to the nuclear radiation being at the source.

(2) S Korea sharing a long border with N Korea will be contaminated with the radiation. 30,000 US troops close to the border will all be contaminated.

(3) If the wind blow towards China, China will get contaminated.

(4) If stronger wind blow, the radiation contamination will blow towards Russia.

(5) If the wind decide to change course, Japan will get contaminated.

Then all "kick the bucket" ---- so do everyone want to show urgency to kick start a Peace Treaty - using "stick" and "carrot" ----- in exchange for everyone's "EGO"?

OK let us look at a psychological case study :-
(1) A small boy fight with a big boy and the small boy was badly battered and bruise.

(2) This small boy run away and lock himself up in an island for (1950 - 2016) for 66 years.

(3) This small boy while nursing his wound - keep hearing that outside big boy will bash him up if he ever leave the island.

(4) In his mind, what do think he will imagine? He will be fearful that the moment he leave the island, he will again be bashed up again or worst - will be killed.

(5) Thus the small boy will naturally want the big boy to sign a Peace Treaty with him to guarantee his safety.

(6) But the big boy refuse to sign a Peace Treaty with him - unless he give up the stick he carry to protect him.

(7) Being locked up in isolation for 66 years - do you think he will give up the stick - in which he is afraid that the moment he gave up the stick - he will get bashed up and got killed.

So given this scenario, will the big boy want to consider signing a Peace Treaty with the small boy in exchange for giving up his stick - and then invite the small boy out?

Remember, US use to be a SuperHero - and will bash any boy that is "seen to be bad".

But US is now transforming into a Bodhisattva (Jesus way) - to make friends and turn adversaries into friends.

US has passed the test on Iran, can US pass the test with N Korea?

The small boy that US has previously bashed?

Recall the Jesus discourse :- "When an adversary slap my right cheek, I will turn the left cheek for him to slap?"

I wish more people would think like this, though it is not as easy as it sounds here. After all, both sides need/want to make sure, the other side is not going to run away with the result and make sure they're the only one gaining Profit from whatever treaty they have agreed upon.

Your second reply to yourself does not hold, however. You should differentiate between the People of North Korea and the leaders of North Korea. The leaders of North Korea will be very well aware what is going on in the rest of the world. That the "little boy" (the people) of North Korea hardly does, is by their design, as is always the case where dictatorist leadership applies.

Otherwise, I agree with you, though not unconditionally. Start talking seriously AND UNCONDITIONALLY and get to an agreement. A serious agreement.

    No venture, no gain.

Like in Iran nuclear deal, the World has the same worry that Iran will run away. But safeguard have been put in place. If the agreement is not honour, stick can be put back in place.

Same safeguard can be put in place for N Korea deal.

It is not easy, but can try and must try.

China play a very pivotal part in ensuring this safeguard - together with International audit team.

    No try, No gain.
