The rail link providing passenger commuters access make more sense - to facilitate travel.

Rail link to provide cargo access - commercially less efficient - as demonstrated by a trial of rail access to Europe.

Reason:- One ship container can carry more than 20,000 TEUs of cargo.
A rail can carry only 45 containers. Also depends on the weight of the cargo, the rail may not be able to take it.

Heavy cargo in container ship can float......

So how many trip the rail need to bring up 20,000 TEUs of cargo to the cargo ship in the port?
Mathematically, 444 rail trips. By the time the cargo ship is fully loaded, the sun rise and set don't know how many moons already loh .......

The ship container captain wait for all the rail trips to arrive to load all the container into his ship - will already have 又长大一岁了 - and he will have sleep on his captain seat with cobwebs all over。

So wonder how does rail cargo can facilitate port access ...........

So far most trade in the World is conducted by cargo container via the sea.

Very little by rail and air freight because it is not efficient and not cost effective - in terms of cargo volume that it can transport.....

Also when put heavy machinery load on a rail, I think the railway track also become "benkuk".

When put heavy machinery on cargo plane, the plane will fly like helicopter - hovering at the height of a tree.......

I thought the One Belt One Road is suppose to benefit Singapore? How can that be if the South China Sea can easily link to the Straits of Malacca and by-passing Singapore with the ECRL, thus taking away our business? It seems that big money and those who hold them has become a great threat to Singapore.

If you take a look at the map between China the west then draw a straight line across you will find that Singapore is far far below. China cannot be interested to link to Singapore just to reach a few million people. The shorter the distance the better. Save time and save money for them. They will by pass us by road and by sea.

No wonder China bought over Gwardar port from Singapore, and maybe try something with Myanmar (Rhakine) or Kra or ECRL, etc. If one place does not work, still have the others. Big money can do wonders.

If ECRL can be successul, then Thailand will bypass Malaysia isnt it? This is just a pipe dream project which in theory is can work, but in practise, there are alot more to a transshipment hub than simply to provide alternative route. Furthermore, From Klang to Singapore is less than a day by sea and the time you safe on ECRL will not be able to justify paying to wait for connectivity .

OBOR from the start is a threat to Singapore's edge. Big C is so willingly to pour in millions to help every country that share their "vision" except Sg. We can't say no to Big C.

If I am the rich boss who is going to benefit the most from this ECRL project, I am not going to tell Malaysia that this will not work! I will make Malaysia thinks it works! If it works, the rich boss wins. If it doesn't, Malaysia pays! Something like 'Heads I win tails you lose'. And if you cannot pay up, you can lease your real estate to me free of charge for 100 years.

More Sg ppl r going to b jobless. Just to provide service with no natural resources, landless n a first world country to keep up 5 to 10 million ppl ? its just unsustainable. Wonder when pap is going to tell the truth n not mislead the Sg ppl that all r well.

Channel News Asia done coverage on the Maritime Silk Road and also on OROB. Many business already aware on its potential impact many Singaporean already here say. Govt just cant proclaim OROB will destroy us. We just have to stay out of our comfort zone and find our edge. Singapore will Survive!

i think cancelling projects which has already started will take a long term toll on Malaysia, not just due to lost of trust from companies who may think twice about signing contracts with the Malaysian govt, but also in future when these completed projects could benefit the country and is being delayed. Construction costs may end up raising if works are delayed for years.

Why China is doing this by land transportation....Think ...
The behind reason is China does not want to depend too much on Straits of Malacca for transportation especially on oil. Currently, 80% oil transportation passing thru straits of Malacca before reaching China .If one day, America and China have conflicts , America can use Singapore as a base to block any oil shipment to China.
Finally , China has found the alternative route and oil supplier which China needs .

I don't understand why they need to link the rails to Klang when there is a cheaper alternative, Johor has good ports. You don't need much tunnelling to Johore and lands are much cheaper than thru Selangor...

Let’s face it, after taking over the Spratly Islands, it clearly shows that it has always been about their own interest and whenever possible, they will muscled it.

China main purpose is to have full control at this part of the world, whether military or economically. No such thing as unilateral, multilateral , but certainly only bi laterally talk is the way they see it because of big power to small power.

There is no need for military take over but using economic power is good enough to over run Laos as an example. Same will be for Cambodia eventually.
