Enhancing defense tie with US - does not necessarily means going against China.

Enhancing defense - include :-
(1) transnational terrorism - where US will certainly has more information and higher leverage as compare to China on ISIS threat in Middle East.

(2) cyberterrorism and defense - is also on the same vein as US are more established in surveillance on cyberterrorism on ISIS threat and in terms of sophistication in IT technologies, US are more advanced and has a wider global spread in Internet than China. Cooperating with US certainly make more sense.

(3) Piracy along SE Asia sea - US has an upper hand as US ships and intelligence along the sea is far more advanced and has more intelligence on the pirate groups and terrorist group in SE Asia.

So having an extra pair of eyes such as the P8 surveillance plane to gather intelligence on dangerous activities along this part of the sea make sense - as the intelligence will enhance advanced planning in case conflicts break out - and preventive, proactive measures can be taken - to stop or discourage conflict in this area will be extremely helpful.

If conflict break out before preventive measures can be undertaken - will be too late.

Eg.
(1) China have little intelligence on ISIS threat in Middle East or has influence on the groups in Middle East. If we enhance intelligence cooperation with China on ISIS, is it more fruitful?

(2) China web sites are all in Chinese. How to gather intelligence or cloud hosting on ISIS web hosting as ISIS? So if we enhance cyber cooperation with China, how do we enhanced the protection against cyberterrorism?

(3) China has little interaction with pirate group in SE Asia. So by cooperating in enforcement on piracy, how to gather intelligence on the pirate groups in SE Asia?

This is pragmatism in security - as the threat pose by the terror groups are very real - and ISIS threat is already penetrating many countries - and there is no time to lose.

China should know that any delay in baselining security arrangement now - will means terrorism piercing through ---- and there is no time to lose.

Singapore army and navy have various joint exercise with China - thus it is not that Singapore has no close military cooperation and engagement with China PLA.

Singapore is not taking side in the East China Sea and South China Sea dispute.

But Singapore is definitely concern if a conflict break out in South China Sea and East China Sea ---- and having preemptive intelligence before hand ---- can help to stop or persuade any military conflict from happenings.

Every Countries in Asia Pacific has a stake in the seas - and will not want any military conflict to happen. Having an extra piece of eyes become necessary.

Moreover, Singapore will not want to see any military conflict between China and US ------ as it is a mammoth catastrophe to any Countries in Asia Pacific - if it happen.

By having advance notice of such happenings - and strive to prevent it from happening --- won't it be a blissful thing?

Singapore does not want to be a whipping boy.

Singapore want to be a middleman to help to preserve peace and discouraged conflict - and the resulting peace to come with prosperity.

Singapore has been a bridge to help US and China break the ice - and as a result, there are all level official engagement and military engagement between US and China - -- that will benefit the World - whether economically or militarily.

Thus Singapore is eager to ensure that such peace and engagement between US and China - continue and improve (not regress) - for the sake of World Peace and World Economy.

Singapore is not eager to play China out and side US.
Neither does Singapore want to play out US and side China.

When we make friends with all, we have no enemies.

There is no benefit for Singapore to offend either China or US.

I agree with Ricky, their spokeswoman say this does not conform the common, but construction of islet and building airstrips in disputed islet they don't say anything, but rather ignore international law of the sea......

China interferes into every other country's sovereignty, like she is the great ah gong! but she does all things everywhere right next to other country's shorelines and claim her rights to do so, with total disregard for international law and rules. If China wants to meddle in other country's affairs and be respected for so doing, she must first have respect and regard for INTERNATIONAL laws and play by INTERNATIONAL rules first.

China has never objected to Singapore's defense alliance with US. But allowing US to set up a military base here is entirely a different scenario.
