Dangers of 'please-all economics' real, S'pore must make hard choices: PM Lee
Published on Jun 16, 2014 5:45 PM

If jobs and economic opportunities are ensured for all Singaporeans, including the hardest hit 40 years and above for all Singaporeans PMETs and Workers to work until the official retirement age of 65 or 67 or in future up to 70 years. - then the issues of demanding a bigger retirement nest egg, more subsidied healthcare and housing, and yet being against admitting more foreigners or raising the consumption tax - will not arise.

Those demands are just symptoms of the real problem.

The root cause or the real problem is thant many 40 years and above Singaporeans PMETs and Workers want to work until the official retirement age of 65 or 67 or in future up to 70 years, but now are retrenched and unable to find jobs to feed themselves and family.

That is why they are harping on bigger retirement nest egg, more subsidied healthcare and housing, and yet being against admitting more foreigners or raising the consumption tax - which does not help them to bring in income to feed their families and save enough for retirement. They just make noise for the wrong reasons and not solving their $$$ problem.

If they have a job and can work until the official retirement age of 65 or 67 or in future up to 70 years - then many will not make noise and the "Please all syndrome" will not arise. Many of this people in this category have been out of jobs for many months and years - and no good news are forthcoming.

This is the real and serious problem.

Eg. if got jobs that come with $$$ - the retirement nest egg will automatically be bigger.
Eg. if got jobs that come with $$$ - can afford with less subsidied healthcare and housing,
Eg. if got jobs that come with $$$ - who care about admitting more foreigners
Eg. if got jobs that come with $$$ - as long as salary increment can more than cover the consumption tax

If no jobs, thus no $$$ - then retirement is an issue, healthcare is an issue, housing is an issue, foreigners that take away our jobs is an issue, tax is an issue - everything under the sun is an issue.
