KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has "admitted defeat" by filing a civil suit against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Umno information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the former statesman resorted to legal means in his bid to oust Najib after his political approaches failed.
"Going to court is just another strategy. Anyone can go to court. We respect his desire to do so.
"He admits that he has failed and lost politically, because he has no support from the people. That's why he resorted to filing a civil suit," Annuar said after meeting MCA leaders here today.
Earlier, Dr Mahathir and two others, former Batu Kawan Umno division vice-chief Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and former Umno member Anina Saadudin filed a civil suit against Najib for alleged misfeasance in public office.
They are seeking a High Court order for Najib to pay RM2.6 billion in exemplary damages and RM42 million in aggravated damages to the government.
