‘I cried every day’: Why Singapore’s vets might be depressed

Studies around the world have long indicated a greater tendency for animal doctors to take their own lives. Now, in Singapore, the issue of mental well-being in the profession is slowly coming into focus.

Nowadays, there are no professions that are not treated badly or abused by more vocal educated customers :-
(1) Doctors, Nurses, Clinical staff
(2) Shop owners, bosses, towkays
(3) Teachers, Principals, Educators
(4) Ministers, Government staff, Civil Servants
(5) Hawkers, Food handlers
(6) Bloggers, Social media contributors and influencers
(7) Every humans under the sun.

The only antidote to such abuse are :-
看破,放下,自在,随缘。
真诚,清净,平等,正觉,慈悲。

You must have very high :-
(1) EQ - Emotional Quotient
(2) IQ - Intelligent Quotient

--- to handle such abusive customers.

Dog lovers and animal lovers should not be vets. Best get a butcher or someone who grew up in a family of butchers.

What nonsense are you saying? You putting butchering and euthanizing domesticated pets in the same category? Simply shallow.
If a butcher is competent to attain a Veterinary degree, he wouldnt be a butcher in the first place.

And next, I had seen some butchers and meat handlers overwhelming emotions when their own pets passes away.

Talk kok sia you

Edward Haxor A butcher knows the anatomy of a dog and animals. When he source his meat from abattoirs he can tell whether an animal is sick or not. Doesn't he make an ideal vet?

Reading about vets getting depressed over euthanising dogs is bizarre to me. Butchers won't have that problem. They don't treat someone's dying dog like their own.

Are you looking down on butchers? Have you tried buying meat or have you spoke to a butcher about his work before. Talking about feeling the loss of his own personal pet doesn't count.

Do you know that vets have to go to abattoirs and slaughterhouses to check if the meat is okay?

Do you know what you are talking about?

Masa Soh Mengming based on what you have written, your butcher is not the person that kills the animal. He merely buy the carcass to be chopped up to smaller pieces for sale. So what gives him the knowledge of whether the animal is healthy or not?

Simple la, any healthy animals will panic when they know their life is hanging. A sick animals don't have that energy to panic...too sick..lifeless.

Hope my explanation help.

Ong DORAMON not yet, there are lots of factors to how sick the animal can be. I had a schnauzer suffering from terminal cancer and he walk away from the vet’s clinic when we went there to euthanize him. The boy is normally very obedient.

Interesting article. Apart frm those common medical court fight & abuse, I really didn't kn Vet will fall sick when one can not separate he/her professional work with he/her personel emotion.

That is really sad.

Try to say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Merry Xmas".

It's more respectful, especially since you profess to be Christian yourself. Thank you, and Merry Christmas to you too.

Paladin Nicholas Lawrence it doesnt matter if it is written merry xmas or merry Christmas. X also means the Cross of Calvary. What is of greater concern here is it that even if I write it as merry Christmas , people continue to ignore the teachings of Christ. Calling oneself a Christian is not the same as loving God and fellow men.

My cat was sick, so brought to the vet. Did a medical check and she gave him a injection, to help his immunity be better, because he had too much white blood cells. When I got home, I put him on the floor and after my shower I went to lift and carry him, he was dead!!!
I immediately went back to the clinic and started screaming, vetting my anger and sadness because I lost my cat due to one silly injection.
They called me in and gave me an explanation, but I couldn't accept it. It was painful, very painful!!!
The vet did something wrong, who knows maybe his health was not good and should not have injected him.
My loss and pain lasted a few months.

Veterinarians, if you have the tendency of committing suicide due to work problems then you are not suitable to be a animals doctor...perhaps you may consider a career change to humans doctor, this way at least you won't feel that bad if you put a human to sleep...

Singapore got human euthanizing system? You speaking as though you really understand but you are completely clueless on this industry. A heartless vet will chop your $ upsize down. So we are trying to weed out the blacksheeps that do nonsense too.

The first step when such thoughts developes, is to see a psychiatrist and get treated. Not changing profession.

Yes, being a vet is tough. Being a pet owner one must be reasonable and understand that the vet has your pet interest at heart. One thing I strongly believe is that during the consultation period, the vet must take his or her time to thoroughly explain to the pet owner on the course of treatment, the whys and the whats. In the even of a surgery, the risks involved. I have been a dog owner for more than 50 years, I have seen vet taking their time to explain and I have also seen vet diagnosing the dog witout even touching them.

Maybe a good idea to start exploring each and every profession, who has their own stories too. No matter what, job fit is very important. Maybe it is time to revise the potential gap of the curriculum to include stress management or emotion management courses, if it is currently inexistent...

The problem may not be the vets profession, the problem may be the pet owners. We used to keep stray dogs and cats, and gave them reasonable quality lives by feeding them scraps. But 1 thing we never do is that we never discard our pets and we do not euthanize the pets, they are like a family member. These days people buy expensive pets and then leave them when they feel bored.

I suppose all suicidal cases, as what that is being published here in these interviews with Singaporean veterinarians by Channel News Asia, are similar in circumstances of one's setbacks in life, when facing and dealing with society, as a whole.

As always, its an emotional decision, perhaps uncontrollable like, touching on one's esteem, and in these suicidal cases, are conclusions being overwhelmingly dejections, the summation derived from applying and appropriating our five senses - see, hear, smell, taste and touch.

The only solution to all our manifested ills, rest with us.

Caring and sharing, is the ultimate solutions, come to think of it.

Let's express the need for it, as it's PRICELESS, even though it's commonly decided as not immediate to many of us. See More

Every profession has its low points. The veterninary industry is no different. Journalists for the sake of whipping out eye catching articles and depressing news, takes one such for readership. It soells a dire lack of creativity . Bad news is easier to write than writing good news.

There was a time when it was written about the same bad news for dentists, doctors, architects, accountants, teachers, elderly, children, gays and marriages.
I would give greater respects to journalists who can see the good in any issue and highlight it to their readers. These are the better quality of writers.
Please don't censor my comments here.

I'm not a racist, but my story about stray dogs left behind by inhabitants on Blakan Mati (now known as Pulau Brani) part of it was used to be RSN Naval Base. Many local breeds of dogs was left behind; as the dogs were too big and not approved by HDB authorities.

I was in the "Marintim Command" later known as RSN, when I did my 'roving sentry' duties around the perimeter of the base, many of the dogs tried to bite and chased me. (my fellow sentries also encountered this.)
I was a difficult duties must be performed.

Later when PSA decided to build port facities on the remaining part of Brani, many 'Thais workers were housed on the construction site.

Whe we did out protrol duties, we encountered less stray dogs barking and trying to bite us. (It was a 'good' blessing indeed). Later we came to know that the stray dogs were caught and eaten by the Thai workers.)

Now on hindsight, I'm thankful for the Thai workers who help rig of the pesty dogs. Wonder they roasted or cooked the dogs in curry or tomyam soups.
