(1) Hongkong economy flourish because of business with mainland China as its hinterland.
(2) If these people whack China too hard and too much - China mainland will restrict business with Hongkong - and many of these people will lose jobs and business will grind to a halt.
(3) This effectively, biting the fingers that feed them or killing the goose that lay the golden eggs.

Danny Lum, while what you have commented is true to a certain extent. China has indeed played an important role in HK's economy but the real beneficiaries to that kind of growth in are the Government, Bankers, businessmen, companies and so on, in other words it only benefits the commercial side of Hongkong. However, the ordinary folks especially the younger generation of Hongkong today, their main issue with the government is political and social which they see it as an injustice that were not properly addressed and bottled up over the years. Thus, it just needed a spark (like this Extradition Bill) to ignite those deeply rooted problems into a fire into something that we have seen recently. So, financial stability is not the only satisfaction factor that the the Hongkong people wants.

You failed to mention important beneficiaries such as the tens of thousands of HK people crossing into China to work daily and have no time or opportunity to demonstrate against the protesters who seem financially secure. Plus a lot of small businesses who depend on China for survival. Maybe China should shut all traffic between China and HK in order for all to count who the beneficiaries and and how many. Fair and just statement?

Tho it may be true....there are no perfect governance in the world ...learn to accept embrace n be content is for the better good for all...ppl in Hong Kong should see the world as a bigger playing field ... leave hk if they feel otherwise ...travel n work where opportunities are...tearing down Hong Kong, rioting with no clear directions is just complete waste of time...this world sitting there complaining will get their lives or situations change...complete Stupidity carrying American n UK flags ..u think the British n American really care ...the Westerners are just capitalising to stir unrest...

(1) When these young protestors are jobless - then their political and social causes will be worthless.
(2) When these young protestors cannot feed themselves - then their protest become hollow.
(3) Foreign investors come to Hongkong to invest - because they want to do business with mainland China as their hinterland. You think foreign investors want to sell their goods and services to a few million people in HongKong or to 1.4 billion people in China?
(4) The moment these young protestors try to cut off the business linkage between Hongkong and China - foriegn investors will leave and these young protestors will find no jobs.
(5) You think their political cause and social cause can put food into their mouth?

China is showcasing the world failure of democracy. It is biding its time to come down hard when the time is ripe.

Like the sentence in a Frank Sinatra song "The End is Near" and this will be for Hong Kong if it continues to be like rats following the Pied Piper of the West to their doom.

Only HKers should comment. They know whats good for them. Not our local chinese who live in a democracy and sulpport dicktatorship
