Cost of living in Singapore: Slow overall inflation but some pressure points

While the overall prices of goods and services are rising at a modest pace, some people are still feeling the pinch due to sharp increases in three main areas: education, healthcare and food.

This is a valid and very good article --- which is particularly relevant to many Singaporeans :-
(1) Jobs - Some household with sole breadwinner - may face the reality of retrenchment (due to reasons such as business restructuring or whatever reason --- lose their jobs).
--- This is the most disastrous impact to the affected household -- who rely on the sole breadwinner to bring in the income to feed the whole family.

---- If inflation badly affect household with job and income ---- what is more disastrous if a sole breadwinner lose his/her job ---- the whole family will be badly affected.

I feel that Government can do more to help this group of people - who seek help -- to help them tie over the predicarment and eventually help them secure a good paying job.

(2) The cost of living - do pose problem with Singaporeans especially those at the middle-income (sandwich class) and lower income group - because Singapore cost of living is indeed quite high.

This article accurately reflect those cost that household got to bear.

Those with the least get the most, but that doesnt mean those WITH MORE DON’T GET ANYTHING! Words of Wisdom from a Great Man!

Can we interpret this way:when the ‘least’ folk(average monthly salary of $1,200)gets an increase of say $100/month, it means the folk is GETTING THE MOST. When the ‘MORE’ folk(average monthly salary from $2,500 to $15,000 or more @$130,000)gets an increase of similar $100/month, it’s PEANUT$!

There is growing sourness and more grumbling, badmouthing and aggravating discontent from diffferent varied grounds than usual about on our Singapore ground - GST, CPF, Housing, Unemployed PMET, Foreign Talent, Maximum Capped Medisave $52000 per person being locked into our accounts for which we should be entitled to use our hard earned money as and when we think fit for our healthcare needs and not with unjust restrictions. These grievances are further aggravated when our ordinary folks who are struggling to make ends meet which are peanuts to those in authority earning millions and hundreds of thousands who lack empathy and that those making policies do not understand the sentiments on the ground.
1) Youtube - thatcher there is no such thing as public money
2) Toh Chin Chye 1984 : I think fundamental principles are being breached. The fundamental principle is this. The CPF is really a fixed deposit or a loan to Government, which can be redeemed at a fixed date when the contributor is 55 years old. If I were to put this sum of money in a commercial bank and, on the due date I go to the bank to withdraw the money, the manager says, " I am sorry, Dr Toh, you will have to come next year", There will be a run on the bank!
It is as simple as this , that the CPF will be kept for Medisave and you cannot withdraw that, even if you were to die." has lost its crediibility, the management of it. This is fundamental.

Medisave capped limit per person :-
$52,000 x 1000 persons = $52,000,000 (52 millions dollars)
$52,000 x 10000 persons = $520,000,000 (520 millions dollars) and so on for all our ordinary folks medisave nested with our government and for which we cannot withdraw to sustain our present high cost of living.

80% of our population stay in highly artificially inflated prices HDB flats, esp those built after 1980s that were priced according to “market rates” and so-called termed as “affordable”! For MOST folks who are Successful in their application to these affordable” flats, and upon signing on the dotted line, they are FORCED straight away to have ALL the balance amount from their CFP OA (less funds for Medisave and Retirement Fund)to finance their 20-25 years mortgage loans! Particularly, this 80% common folks are ACTUALLY OWNSELF FINANCE OWNSELF!....from having a ROOF OVER THE HEAD, MEDICAL CARE AND EXPENSES AND RETIREMENT NEEDS! Looks like OUR GOVERNMENT is only CONCERNED and TAKING CARE of the top 20% while the 80% OWNSELF TAKE CARE OWNSELF. Wah lan. THE GOVERNMENT HAS THE MOST EASIEST JOB ON PLANET EARTH....Somemore, DRAWING WORLD HIGHEST SALARY! And they say, NO ONE WANTS TO JOIN THE GOVERNMENT!

There are better true blue Singaporeans that are very willing to work for modest pay to serve sovereign country. What nonsense uttered by old Mr Goh that these ministers must be paid millions

Oh, the mediocre universities with mediocre research stewww asking for more tuition fees? Courses with 'all-round' education lasting mandatory 4 years (and hence 4 years of tuition fees for useless 'all-round' extra modules)....top brass must be laughing to the bank all these years. Ask employers for opinions on 'all-round' grads lol.

Parents are burdened by the high cost of private tuition fees as they want their children to do well and get into the limited vacancy of the NUS and NTU. Admission requirements to NUS and NTU is among the highest in the world and many students with good result have to go overseas to study. Singapore education is of highest standard mainly due to student out performaning with the help of the private tuition centres.

Not true!
Not always 80-120, it depends on your consultation and treatment. A lot of time is around $50 for short time and simple consultation. Many GP experience low patient load and as a result they need to raise consultation fees by give longer and more detailed consultation. Most patient go to get subsidied healthcare at Polyclinics is the result why GP are have low patient load and therefore the need for GP to raise fees on consultation.

If one can save $1,5k a month is already a family of doing very well in wealth. But saving is not wise. The $1,5k should use partially on investment instead.

Article did not share how their luxury oversea trip cost. Their monthly saving can b eipe out with just one/more trip.

When u r stress abt your retirement meaning the $1,5k is just a figure with no good plan.
Plan again for this thrifty family though.

"Focus on low income"? Middle income groups are equally vulnerable. Unless there is a unique definition to suggest that low income = the net value from the ratio of all expenses of necessities over actual earning.
