There are 2 true stories the Singaporeans can learn from about whether to pay high salary to deliver or pay mediocre salary - and not sure the persons can deliver or not :-

(1) Corporate story
- A person is paid $1 million per annum as CEO to helm an Organization.
- This person deliver a profit of about $500 million every year and is too conservative - not really innovative.
- A new person is employed as CEO to replace him and he asked for $3 million per annum
- This new CEO deliver a profit of about $4 billion every year and penetrated into few new regional market - and has drive innovation.

Conclusion :- the new CEO who demand 3 times the salary higher - deliver 8 times higher the profit for the whole organisation.

We rather pay this new CEO 3 times more - to get 8 times more profit for the whole organization.

(2) Governance story
- Some people say, politicians should pay very little salary - and should serve selflessly for the Nation.
- Never mind, if the politicians lifespan is very short - every 5 years may lose elections.
- Never mind, whether if the politicians can feed themselves, their families or even lose their jobs or asked to leave their high pay job to join the politics - but get very little pay to feed themselves.

Questions asked :-
(1) Does Singaporeans really think that politicians will serve the Country wholeheartedly when they cannot keep themselves and their families well fed?
(2) Does Singaporeans really think that corruption will not creep in or politicians doing sidelines to make sure they can retire in peace with enough dollars will not come into picture?

Let us be realistic.
If private lives can bring good money for these people --- what make the good competence people want to leave their good pay - to come out to serve the Nation - when they can't guarantee a comfortable lives for themselves and their families?

Thus the argument of cutting Ministers pay to fund social programme - is just a gimmick to win votes ---- but will cause Singapore to go down the path into mediocrity.

Just ask everyone here, are Singaporeans willing to cut pay for the sake of bringing higher profit for your Organisation?

Of course not - as you should be paid for your worth.

Similarly, the Ministers should also be paid for what they are worth.

The corporate story and the government story --- prove this point.

Taking stock of what the Ministers have produced for Singapore - and whether they deserve their pay.
Singapore under the current Government has many notable achievements :-
(1) The 3rd wealthiest Country in the World in per capita income (GDP PPP) - surpassing wealthy Countries like USA, Japan, China, S Korea, Australia, Canada, Europe like Germany, Switzerland, UK, France, Norway, Finland, Italy etc.

(2) Has foreign exchange reserve more than 2 times the size of USA.

(3) More than 90% of house ownership - among the highest in the World and continue to build high quality HDB flats for new ge
neration of Singaporeans and residents.

(4) Has Sovereign Funds 3 times the size of the Economy - to continue to earn ROI and grow the worth of our CPF, Sovereign Wealth and Reserve of Singapore.

(5) Has Trade 3 times the size of the Economy - to create more jobs for Singaporeans.

(6) Has entered into bi-lateral and multi-lateral FTAs - among the highest in the World - to grow trade and contribute to the GDP and Economic Growth of Singapore.

(7) Build a highly capable 3G SAF - Army, Airforce and Navy - to protect the lives of Singaporeans.

(8) One of the most IT savvy and network Smart Nation - to improve the standard livings of Singaporeans.

(9) Build one of the most Advanced medical healthcare and improve the overall healthcare of Singaporeans.

(10) Build Highly integrated rail, bus, cab, private hire transport network - to facilitate commuting of Singaporeans.

And many other achievements.

This is similar to the Corporate Story ---- whether the Ministers deliver the "worth" as "CEO of Singapore" ---- and whether these CEOs deserve the pay given to them.

Singapore Government as "CEO" --- indeed has surpass the Switzerland standard of living for Singaporeans --- now the 3rd wealthiest Country in the World - losing only to Qatar and Luxembourg.

Wonder whether Singaporeans want to let any mediocre politicians, not pay them well --- "penny wise, pound foolish" to lead Singapore as Ministers, as Singapore CEOs --- or let competent Ministers as Singapore CEOs to lead Singapore into greater height and bring more benefits to Singaporeans.

Or let mediocrity creeps in and slowly, systematically damaged and destroyed Singapore in the long run.

Singapore current achievements ---- is consider a miracle ever produced by a small Nation with no resources - except human resources in a "little red dot".

It has built Singapore into a miracle from "nothing".

So doesn't the Singapore Ministers, CEOs - deserve the pay they command? Or pay them less than they are worth and bring Singapore's future down?

It is completely simple or populist for "fly by night politicians" to sell the ideas of :-
(1) No need to pay me so much, pay me half of what the current Ministers is getting - and i will serve you.
(2) I will be like Trump, no need to pay me a single cent - and i will make "Singaporeans First".

--- See what will happen to Singapore?

Probably a few years down the road, Singapore will go back into "kampong life", "fester with gangsterism", "corruptions" and back into "marshland" - from "miracle" into "nothingness".

Pay peanuts - get monkey. ---- and Singaporeans will be too late to cry --- when we end up as "Singaporean Last".

Singapore GDP :-
1965 - $2.98 billion
2014 - $390 billion
2018 - $554.9 billion

GDP per capita :-
1965 - $1,580 per annum per household
2014 - $71,318 per annum per household
2018 - $90,531 per annum per household

Singaporeans should look at the phenomenon growth in GDP generated for Singapore by the Singapore Ministers as Singapore CEOs.

Decide for yourselves - should Singapore pay Ministers for what they deserve - or pay peanuts for medicore politicians to lead us?

Ricky Lim since singaporeans is so wealthy according to your statistics with regard to household income, so how come I see many old uncles aunties in their seventies and eighties still working in food courts cleaning tables in coffee shops? Something must be wrong here.
Maybe you do not visit such places just like the rich ministers.
Can any help be given to them?
Like one old lady I met she said the rich do not know the suffering of the poor.
Such is the breed of our ministers I think.

Lay Poh Lim - Did those uncles and aunties own their HDB flats or some even own private estates?
Based on statistics, more than 90% of Singaporeans own their houses.

If they do, minimally their housing assets will have given them about $250,000 to $1 million depending on their housing types.

Those uncles and aunties at their 70s or 80s are not a destitute - because earning an income whether to past times, whether to supplement their incomes - earning a decent income is no shame.

Singaporeans like you think that working through old age is shameful - but i have alot of respect for these old uncles and aunties as I have old relatives and friends who are working through their 70s and 80s.

Unless you think that they should enjoy lives like "tai tai" - every day go to high teas or go shopping, or shaking legs. I have more respect for those who are working.

For those who are unhappy with the Government generally encounter problems in their lives such as :-
(1) Mid career crisis - eg. retrenchment due to disruptive tech, business restructuring etc.
(2) Business not doing well - eg. due to disruptive tech, or lose competitiveness.
(3) Student too competitive - not able to go mainstream Uni or poly or JCs etc.
(4) Rising cost of living
or other personal issues or household issues.

And simply, these people will blame it on the Government - thinking that the Government are solely to blame for their predicarment.

But how often people will think of ways to work their way out of their own predicarment, and at the same time seeking help from the Government to give them a lift through various sources?

Singaporeans who have previously done well, but face difficulties now or Singaporeans who have been facing difficulties but do not know how to approach for help ---- will simply blame the Government for "my" predicarment --- but instead of finding ways to solve their problems creatively, innovatively or seeking the right help to get themselves out of their predicarment.

I have seen many Singaporeans who tried with determination, who stay positive --- successfully get themselves out of their difficulties.

But I have also seen some Singaporeans - whining, complaining, blaming Government, blaming organisations, blaming their ex-bosses, ex-colleagues or anyone else or spewing all negativities ------ keep spiralling downwards instead of getting themselves out of their own difficulties.

Those who stay positive normally succeed.
For those who turn negative or stay negative - will hardly get out of their predicarment.

Ricky Lim Firstly Ricky, your hypothetical story is fairy tale, suitable for bedtime story only. What makes you think, you pay higher salary you get better result and may not be poorer result?
Anyway in a corporate world, you sack those that cannot meet your grade and like dead wood, you throw them to the fire. However in governing a country, how would you like your government to prepare a few nice boat and float those who are blind, wheel chair bond and saddled with illness to the high sea and leave them to fend for themselves.
Your system of grading people may put mother Theresa worst than a mediocre being for she cannot make millions for any corporation and in fact she begs them to give money.

Ricky Lim is in fact living in his own fairy tale and he is a young idealistic boy who have only seen, heard but have never encountered. I would assume that he only reads without understanding the realities. Many old people worked because they have no money to survive...sell away their "leased" hdb flats? where are they going to live? Many old folks are not able to stand long due to old age and they still have to tolerate the pains to sweep the floors and clear the plates. Would you want to work if you constantly feel the physical pains while working, given that you have the means to stop workSee More

More silver hair, U got the numbers. Vote pap out. S I had suggested many times b4 all salaries from gov must cut to $10,000 per month for PM down to fresh graduate of $2000 per month with yearly increment of $50. MP starts at $5000 with a free HDB flat. Only advantage is that those on gov salary r given a free HDB flat after 30 years of service continuously or otherwise. U will lose your chance of a free HDB flat if u fall short of the 30 years of gov service. U can work till u drop dead if u wish n would b reassigned to lower paid jobs of no increments at $3000 per month if u lose your abiliSee More

Is about success rate. If you get smarter talents to lead chance of success is higher than when you get mediocre people to run the country because this is all about foresight and good decision making.
