Meanwhile, public affirmation that the Pakatan government is committed to safeguarding Malaysia’s national interests on bilateral issues, whether the water agreements with Singapore or the High Speed Rail project, have elicited some endorsement from the electorate.

While Malaysia play to the gallery of the electorate to so call safeguard Malaysia's national interests.
Singapore will also safeguard Singapore interest - by throwing down the Signed International Agreement that both Malaysia and Singapore signed.
And if Malaysia fail to comply or insist on negotiation that is not in line with the Signed International Agreement -- suggest both settle the dispute in International Courts.
Malaysia new government talk about the needs to follow "rule of law".
Settling the disputes in the Signed International Agreements, which essentially is a Contract that are legally binding in Courts --- is the conformance of the spirit of "rule of law".

The next question to be asked is :-
(1) Is the Malaysia Government capable of honouring International Contracts or Signed International Agreements --- or there is always an inclination of re-negotiating the Signed Contracts or International Agreements the moment it feels that the Contracts or Agreements is not working to its interests or it feels that it want more out of the Contracts or Agreements?
If yes, other Countries in the World will stop signing any contracts or agreements with Malaysia - because Malaysia always has the tendencies to break contracts or agreements - even though it willingly sign it at the beginning - but have the tendency to flip flop or break the contracts later with its whims and fancies.

Malaysia seems to be protraying itself to the World as an unreliable and untrustworthy partner --- looking at the way it conduct itself --- in intending to break contracts or agreements - with Singapore and China investors and investment partners - whether Government or Commercial Partners --- in the name of "national interests".
