Li-Fi, Internet by light, fiber and FSO (free space optics) - all uses light source (lamda) for data transmission.
Light source will be able to transmit higher bandwidth as compare to radio frequency. But the limitations are :-
(1) it must have line of sight. any obstruction will cut off the transmission and result in loss of data.
(2) it cannot penetrate wall or door - whereby home users or office users can still transmit data behind doors and walls and need not sit in front of the Li-Fi transmission unit for data access.
FSO which was used earlier for transmission by light source to supplement telco services or fiber connection in a campus or across a street - has ceased to exist in the last few years.
Not sure whether Li-Fi will pick up and not go down the fate of the FSO.
