ビンオマール宗作 Your 70% majority logic defies rational acceptance. It certainly does not allow this Parliament to ride rough shod over the 30% by passing any law favourable to their own party.

Early elections were called after LKY's passing because of his broad-based popularity and the ruling party managed to ride on the wave of sympathy votes. In return the Dishonourable One chose to not respect the Final Will. It is for this reason why LHL could not let go of 38 Oxley Road. It is a symbol of a dynastic Seal for power continuance!

You asked that his siblings be sympathetic towards their elder brother because of his tremendous work load in governance. Instead you should be asking LHL to let go of this fiasco and concentrate on things for the state!

Tay Hai Kong - Oxley House is to inspire Future Leaders and All Singaporeans - based on the principle of Pure Meritocracy - if you understand the significance and meaning of Heritage. It is a National Heritage - a symbol of collective Wisdom and Struggle of how our Pioneer Leaders and Pioneer Singaporeans has gone through to survive crisis over crisis --- and a future inspiration = to inspire Future Leaders and All Future Singaporeans not to be cowed by future crisis and emerge stronger through crisis.
Oxley House as Heritage is meant for public-serving not self-serving.

Ricky Lim ,

--- If we do not build monument, should we knock down Sir Stamford Raffles statue?
Did Sir Stamford Raffles ***write a will*** to clearly say that he did not want a statue to be built for him?

--- If we do not build monument, should we knock down the Merlion statute - and forget about our history of Lion City, the Sang Nila Utama, the name called Temasek.
Did the Merlion ***write a will*** to clearly say that it did not want a symbol for himself? LOL

--- If we do not build monument, should we knock down the World War 2 Peace monument at City Hall?
Did the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in WW2 ***write a will*** not to build the WW2 war memorial?

--- If we do not build monument, should we knock down the old Supreme Court that feature the Colonial style building architecture?
See answers above. You get the idea.

(5) In the same vein, should we knock down the Sun Zhong Sun villa, the Alkaff mansion, the Peranakan Museum?
See answers above.

"... Then Singapore will have no more heritage ..."
Is preserving the house the only way to preserve the heritage?

"... I think many Singaporeans are supportive of demolishing the House for the following reasons ..."
You have omitted the most important one: in deep gratitude to Mr LKY and thus to honour his will. Well, at least it is for me, even if it doesn't mean as much to you.

"... So should Oxley House be conserved as a Heritage - to inspire future Singapore Leaders, Singaporeans - when we encounter future insurmountable crisis - that nothing is impossible to achieve ..."
Do you get more inspiration from visiting the Oxley House or from reading Mr Lee's memoirs and books? Can we not have a section in the National Museum specially made for Mr LKY? In this multimedia age, isn't there no other way to remember him by? Anyway, I will hate to tell future generations how Singaporeans who claim to love Mr LKY choose to dishonour his will. And in the eyes of the international community too.

"... we should keep Oxley House - as our Heritage (not personality cult, not dynasty) ..."
I thought Mr Lee wanted it to be torn down exactly because he did not want personality cult?

RIP, Mr Lee.

Reds Lim - all your responses are "self-serving" - which are self-defeating and is not worthy of further comments - instead of "public serving" except one.
"Self-serving" (自私) means it is selfish-incline, it is self-centred that meant to serve "self-interest" - and not able to see the values for future generations - hence not worthy of comments.
"Public-serving" (无私) - means it is selfless - it has the vision of serving future generations and future descendants - and worthy of comments.
--
You mention that instead of making Oxley House as Heritage, reading Mr Lee KY memoirs, books - or i presume filming the House, documentary films suffice.
Now ponder over the following :-
(1) By looking at the documentary film of China Great Wall - will it be as strong as beneficial of visiting the China Great Wall - to see for yourself, to immerse in it, to feel it?
Watching a film has no such experience and benefit - and people tend to forget very quickly - instead of interanlising as oppose to visiting the real Heritage site.
Else why people go for tours? See documentary film is good enough. Why tour?

Keeping the House for Heritage for Conservation is not hero-worshipping.
It is a place where many important decisions that help to resolve crisis over crisis - were made during the early days - where Singapore's fate faces insurmountable risks.

If one day, Singapore need reminders, need a rallying point or need inspirational source - visit the Oxley House ----- "where the top pioneer leaders --- meet and make vital decisions -- that transformed Singapore from a marsh swampy land - into a now bustling cosmopolitan 1st class developed Nation".

It will inspire future Singapore leaders and people ---- nothing is "mission impossible" - because our Pioneer Leaders has transformed bleak future - into one solid prosper future for us --- whatever crisis can be overcome and resolve.

This is the significance of the Heritage of Conserving this Oxley House is all about.

It is not hero-worshipping.

It is not about worrying - critics will bad mouth our Pioneer Leaders. (Who in this world, whichever Politicians are not criticised or bad-mouth? Even Buddha was defamed and bad-mouthed. Even God is bad-mouth.

What is important is in the "Heart".

It is about a Rallying Point.
It is about an Inspirational Source.
It is about a place of Reminder - that we can overcome - whatever the crisis we face.

Get it?

The impact of visiting a Heritage - where events take place is very powerful --- much more than seeing documentary films.

It can invoke strong sentiment and can draw inspiration.

If the Heritage is demolished - there is nothing left to inspire - except to watch documentary films - that does not stimulate all the 5 senses - except the eyes and ears senses.

If don't believe - visit Pearl Harbour in Hawaii - and feel and watch for yourselves the sunken warship with dead bodies in it - the very Heritage that was preserved - to remind us not to start a World War.

If don't believe - visit the 911 sites of twin tower - where 3,000 over international lives perished --- it can be extremely emotional.

Never underestimate a Heritage.

I hope the siblings read this and get the message.

The ruling party has a mandate from the electorate to serve it as a good steward. If it's not a good steward, they know the consequences when the next election comes around. I trust that they would be a good steward for the common good.
If the 3 siblings could be magnanimous for the people of Singapore, I am sure their father, a true son of the nation, would be well pleased and proud of them regardless of his will.

Ricky Lim do you know both u n lhl can save a lot time n trouble, simply gazette the place?

Pierre Leo - Actually, gazetting the Oxley House is a straight forward, simple thing to do, and no need to waste time if not for the following development :-
(1) The siblings raise a serious allegation "abuse of power", "lose confidence in the leadership" - this has serious implication in running down the credibility and integrity of the Government that are running Singapore - who are now grappling with the massive economic transformation and the terrorist threat trying to pierce our defenses.
The serious allegaton - attempt to poke our defense from behind - and sapping the Govt attention, energy and resources.
(2) The male sibling is exploiting the stature of Mr Lee KY to run the PM down and the Cabinet down ---- just based on the many negative comments here prove this point.
If justifications to preserve the Oxley House - are not explained thoroughly, and if the justifications cannot match and even exceed Mr LKY's justifications of demolishing the Oxley House ----- it will have serious implications and consequences to the Cabinet and Future Leaders.
Otherwise, I will have better things to do - than waste time arguing and justifying the Preservation of the Oxley House.
It is to :-
(1) Restore the confidence in the Leadership - that are democratically elected to make decision for Singapore and run Singapore to best of their abilities - for the greater good of Singaporeans and the future descendants.
(2) To enable the Leaders from concentration on larger and more critical issues - such as Economic transformation and Security challenges - that are threatening the livelihood and the lives of Singaporeans.
For such a trivial "House issue" - it is easy to tackle the sibling's daily "poke" and not let the Leaders get distracted.
Else I will have spend my time on more useful issues.

Ricky Lim ,
Please make more sensible comments. You mentioned that preserving the old broken down house (nearly 100 years old) will restore confidence in the leadership is a no brainer. Carry on late LKY's ideals of meritocracy, equality, multi-racial society and think out of the box will restore the public's confidence in the leadership. Don't over rule late LKY decision to demolish hhis house. He mentioned in Parliament and in the Media as well as iin his book :Hard Truths"

Lim Robert - the whole dispute and quaralel is about :-
(1) Preservation vs Demolish
(2) Accusation of using Preservation Law - is an abuse of power - leading to lost of confidence in leadership
(3) The topic is no about "late LKY's ideals of meritocracy, equality, multi-racial society ". No one dispute about this ideals.
(4) The final question is albeit private will has its legal power (is about private wishes, and private interest) - but can it override Preservation Law (that take National Interest into account)?
This is the whole argument is about.
I think you are "out of topic" and "out of context".
