US show of force to North Korea also could show US weakness

It need not be a weakness - if process and procedure of engagement are laid out and make transparent.
If economic sanctions and political sanctions are articulated upfront, it should be follow through.
If a "red line" is articulated and N Korea flout it, then response will have to be made if N Korea deliberate flout it.

Objective is to prevent N Korea from developing nuclear.
Be it political means, economic means - and as last resort military means if all else fail.

If it comes to a showdown, my bet is that China will invade and replace the PRNK government, supported by a joint USA/ROK containment of all PRNK troops in the southern areas. Unification could follow relatively soon. This could be a win/win for everyone.

USA needs to take strong action now rather than later. Now = BEFORE NK gets nukes on missiles.
After many years of negotiation, there is no choice. Do you want to risk war now, when they don't really have the ability to hit you, or later, when they DO?
Hope the US uses its Aegis to shoot down the NK missiles in international waters. That way there is no attack on NK territory and no actual threat to the NK government, but it also makes a very strong point.
