As the global geopolitical landscape is shifting - particularly with the US, China and other regional countries - Singapore must "carefully watch and navigate" these new forces, while keeping in mind not to be "short-term opportunists without principles", said Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Chan Chun Sing on Saturday (Aug 12).
Speaking at a National Day dinner at Tiong Bahru Community Centre, Mr Chan said Singapore must remain principled and pragmatic and take a long-term view if it wants to be taken seriously. It must also be conscious about the forces that are always evolving, and make adjustments as and when needed.
"We need to have a clear-eyed view of where our interests are, and the cards we have on our side,” he said. “It is not helpful to start any conversation on foreign relations with the question on if we are to be on the side of Country A or should we be on the side of Country B.
“We are not vassal states of any bigger country.”

Singapore

Let us put things in perspective.

China is our largest trading partners and Singapore is the largest investor in China.

But Singapore has also many large trading partners such as :-
(1) ASEAN
(2) FTA with US
(3) FTA with India
(4) FTA with Japan
(5) FTA with Australia, New Zealand
(6) Impending FTA with EU
(7) FTA with S Korea
and many trade with Countries all over the World ---- which comprise our vital trading partners and trade that contribute to our GDP.

While the importance of trade and relationship with China cannot be underestimated, our relationship with all the above must also be balanced.

Singapore

It is not a zero-sum game.

We cannot ignore the rest of the World - and solely cater for China alone.
Nor can we ignore China - and cater solely for the rest of the World.

China is important to Singapore.
The rest of the World is also equally important to Singapore.

We must be friends to all and adversaries to none.

This philossophy since independence must be upheld.

That is why Singapore needs to explore opportunities and diversify its trade relationships, to not only tap on the growth market beyond its borders, but also to ensure that its economy cannot be held ransom by depending on just one or two countries, said Mr Chan.

By using GNP to replace GDP to compute Economic Growth it means our External Economy, investment, our Corporates and businesses overseas have bring in substantial economic return to Singapore.

By using GNP, we have join Switzerland to have successfully grow our 2nd wings of external economic sector to supplement our domestic economy.

This together with Digital Economy will have overcome our vulnerability as External Economy or our businesses all over the world have grow footprints beyond our little red dot and physical boundaries.

That is we have successfully make the World our hinterland and our marketplace.
