The inevitable. Trump is not pressuring Singapore coz he is looking for redress of the trade deficit, thus Singapore's silence on the previous rhetoric of constant condemnation of china not abiding the international court ruling of china to hands off the 9 dash lines of the SCSea. S chair of ASEAN next year, a great contrast would clearly emerge that the constant warning from china that " u r still adamant n continue to let USA to park its war machine in Singapore n spy on me, to destroy me", would render Singapore ineffective to b a trumpet for the west to tell china off in its ambition to police the SC Sea n beyond. Thus the slow demise of ASEAN. ASEAN's relevance would b revived, if all ASEAN were to cooperate with china, which means distancing n diminishing USA hegemony in Asia. Once the 3 USA stooges, Japan, S Korea n Taiwan do the same, will there b peace in Asia. S Korea n Taiwan can b easily tamed when they c the seriousness of nuclear war on their doorstep, when USA could run back thousands of miles to their comfort zone, after screwing up the fight. But the Japanese had undermined china for too long n China is one who would not forget n forgive. Japan may have reached the point of no return unlike S Korea n Taiwan, where many of its citizens wanted USA out of their soil. The little Okinawa protest against US bases in Okinawa can easily b suppressed by Japanese politics. Thus Japan wanted to c china get fragmented into small corrupt pieces so that it can reign over them like in WW2 but this time with Japan's economic when greater china is no longer in existence. Bala's statement appeared that all is not well. Perhaps u may think otherwise.

It will be a fairy tale if there are completely no differences and perspectives on international issues.
Even spouses, parents and offsprings, sbilings, close friends will have differences.

It is how people manage differences in a mature manner that is important.

For eg. China and India are now in border dispute.

We can't overnight stand on the side of China - and turn against India or can we stand on the side of India - and turn against China.

As both China and India are our close friends and trading partners.

Our perspectives on our relationship with China and India has to be consistent - based on principles that protect our National Interest, adopt principles that promote relationship and interest with our close friends and trading partners and adopting principles that are acceptable as conduct for promoting International relationship

Thus there cannot be 100% in line and there are no differences in any relationship with other Countries.
It is how we manage differences.

And what is our standing principles in foreign relationship?

It is :- "Friends with all Countries. Adversaries to non".
"Based on mutual benefits with win-win outcome."
"Protecting our National Interests while accomodating the interests of others."

Ricky Lim if that can b done, when u house the military machinery of USA n help USA to spy on china n perhaps attack china, u expect that is acceptable with just rhetoric of " friend to all ?"

Dave Pilot - I don't think Singapore is collaborating with US to spy on China or worst attack China.
Because it doesn't make sense - as Singapore has invested heavily in China - in fact Singapore is the largest investor in China.
By harming China - will in fact harm our own interest.

In addition, we have bases in many Countries - to train our own troops. It does not mean that by doing so, we have ulterior motives.
It is just a simple case of needs for training.

Ricky Lim tell that to China that u allow USA military in your soil to fight china n not allow Chinese military to park in Singapore. Now u r coming to the point. Large investment in china. China does not need Singapore money. China is going to squeeze Singapore till all its investment in china went bankrupt. China know how to play economic war with Singapore if it cannot use military to drive USA out of Singapore

If China acts like you say then it can look forward to many more years of capital flight. Factories can be set up anywhere in the world that's cheaper than China. Already happening.

Jacqueline Wee u r quite right there r many cheaper places to do business coz doing business is no longer cheap in china. Many got conned n no legal remedy due to "corruption" in favour of the rule of law to the government ppl or indirectly related companies. Many lost money n went bankrupt. Why Singapore still pumps money into china ? To please china ? I m not sure, u tell me.

The only advantage doing business in china is the vast domestic market, the purchasing power of the Chinese. If u can sell your items in china, u need not go anywhere. My reading is s long s USA keep using Singapore bases, keep spying on china, china is going to hate Singapore more.

Dave Pilot - Do you know that Singapore Navy frigate visited China Qingdao to do a port call this year.
China PLA navy also send its navies to Singapore port for an International Maritime Review this year. US navies also participated inthis review.

In addition, China PLA is asking Singapore to organise a China-ASEAN maritime exercise - as part of confidence building and trust building between China and ASEAN.

So how are you saying Singapore port only cater to US and not China?
In fact Singapore cater for International navies to build friendship and confidence and trust.

Singapore has worked closely hand in hand with China for more than 3 decades in investment, business and has business interest in practically all the provinces in China.

The trust between Singapore and China is more than what you think.
You try to wedge distrust between Singapore and China will not succeed - similar to that Prof Huang Jin.

Moreover, our business dealings and joint venture with China has benefitted both sides.
China is also facing a $30trillion debt. Our confidence in China is well appreciated by China.

So no need to create conflict between Singapore and China - it will not work.

Dave Pilot - And your article on Suzhou are few decades old.

Our experiences in many business ventures and eco-City - such as Chongqing, Tianjin, Nanjing and even now Suzhou have many successful ventures.

So your article to wedge conflict (like Prof Huang Jing) does not work.

Those Government officials and business people directly working on the ground is the best testimonial of our pleasant and successful ventures with China.

Few hundred billions of trade done every year with China is our solid testimony --- not your decade old outdated foreign article.
