U.S. Navy's challenge in South China Sea? Sheer number of Chinese ships

Escalation of tension - such as physical proximity, close contact, even surrounding or impeding naval ships - will be more and more likely along the South China Sea.

Doubt real shots will be fired at each other - as both sides are not eager to start a war.

Before diplomacy kicks in.

This South China Sea issue - if cannot settled amicably and fairly - will ignite more and more of such conflicts that will destabilise the region - which will not be of the interest of everyone that have interest in the Asia Pacific.

Well already said the World have 3 hotspots :-
(1) Middle East hotspot
(2) Europe-Russia hotspot
(3) Asia Pacific hotspot

Certainly these 3 hotspots take turn to glow red.
