💬 With the rise in community cases and new active clusters formed, how can we remain vigilant and emerge stronger as a community in our fight against the pandemic?
The number of unlinked Covid-19 cases in Singapore has been going up steadily this month, giving rise to concerns that there are undetected reservoirs of infections in the community. There are currently 24 active clusters.
Mr Wong, the Finance Minister, said at the May 18 task force press conference that the rise in unlinked cases this month does not mean that measures are not working.
"In fact, I have confidence that the latest measures that we have put in place to restrict interactions and movement will have an impact in bringing numbers down. But we will only see this materialising one to two weeks later because of the time lag in these measures," he said, noting that the cases currently being detected were likely infected one or two weeks ago.
RECAP of the new measures & strategy for Singapore's vaccination programme:
• Those aged 40-44 years old can register for vaccinations from 19 May
• Interval between the doses will be extended to 6-8 weeks, speeding up its COVID-19 vaccination rollout and prioritising first doses for more people to increase the nationwide coverage

Barricades and chairs were being set up at the void deck of Block 506 Hougang Ave 8 on Friday (May 21) morning to prepare for a swabbing exercise slated to begin later today for the entire block. This is after some residents of the 12-storey block were found to have tested positive for Covid-19.
This is the first time an entire block of residents, comprising about 120 households, will be undergoing mandatory Covid-19 testing as a precautionary measure.

Situation A
Open or partial confined space needs time to recirculate the air within the space, the larger these space (volume) the longer times it takes to clear the air. The ventilation is greater in these spaces of utility.
Situation B
For confined space like an aircon environment, it may takes longer time to clear the air within this blocked environment to an acceptable safety level. For bus or train, the early mode tends to have a higher airflow, a higher velocity and intermittent ventilation compare to a train cabin. In the case of a larger space like a train station, airport or mall, the ventilation is dependant on the airflow and its velocity.
Will a HEPA filter system works? How long it takes for a full cycle cleansing? When to replace such a filter? What other large scale air cleaning system available? Air Extractors?
Situation C
When we broaden both A & B environments to a city, a community or a building, the inter- buildings and the in-between open spaces will be the key in determining a lower or higher ventilated cluster of airflow that will have an impact to the velocity that will determine the cycles of flow on an hourly basis. Much research is needed to derive a confident model of air quality index, this case not haze nor pollutant but pathogens! Possible?
For future city and town planners, the structured amenities, facilities and ecology will need a deeper thinking in terms of breathing space and importantly ventiation, seasonal wind conditions and the cycles of airflow to better prepare for future epidemics or other larger spread of diseases with it bateria or virus! Are the current space plannings meet the current/future situations?
Summary
Situational (open, partial or confined), airflow, velocity (seasonal), ventilate and importantly the physical distance and VOLUME (lxbxh) speaks the loudest!

e. Those who are not vaccinated will face a risk of more serious illness from covid.
f. End up, Compulsory Vaccination maybe mandated for those unvaccinated people that are medically eligible to be vaccinated to prevent serious illness from covid.
g. For those unvaccinated people who are medically ineligible, non-mRNA vaccines must be used to prevent serious illness from covid.

Vaccination don’t cause the virus to mutate. Mutations happen naturally.
When population is immune to a certain strain; as the virus continue to spread in the population that are not vaccinated. The ones that mutate enough to have next generation has a better chance to survive. If happen that mutated ones able to infect vaccinated individuals, over time the best version will spread within the community. Hence the rise of the mutated strain.

My layman take on CV19 is that it is THE flu virus of our generation. Just like how in the past our forefathers died of what we now call the "common flu".
What is worrying about CV19 (to me) is that (it seems) the mutation had made the virus much more effective in surviving and replicating while it, being a "parasite", harms the hosts' body. It has already mutated to a more virulent/transmisble form. Imagine what will happen if/when it then mutates to become more lethal?
For a virus to gain longevity, it would be advantages to be/have:
1. Stealth - able to avoid/delay detection while being transmissible
2. Highly infectious - Efficient mode of transmission eg. carried in the aerosols from a host's sneeze
3. Low Fatality rate - So the host can continue to spread the virus to other hosts. In fact, when the hosts are not severely incapacitated ie. "healthy" enough move around and continue with daily routine, the more effective the transmission to other hosts.
CV19 checks all those boxes. That's why it is so difficult to eradicate. The more recent mutations have shown that it has evolved in ways that makes stealthier. Most hosts are now asymptomatic while being infectious!
Since everyone's biological response to a virus is different, if it manages to infect more hosts, the probability that the virus will gain stronger or more lethal mutations increases. The surviving virus is either strong enough to render our immune system/drug ineffective, or its smart enough to evade our defenses. Either way, its bad news since it will continue to replicate and infect more hosts until it is stopped. The mutations occur at an exponential rate with every additional host it can infect. That's why it is so important to halt the transmission.
Some wonder what there is to fear if mortality rate is low and most patients do not seem to fall extremely ill. Well, some studies have shown that there are lingering/long-term effects from catching CV19. The most commonly cited being respiratory related issues such as permanently and acutely reduced lung function. What other long term harm/issues will a newer mutation cause?
Remember HIV? Noticed that the CV19 has very similar characteristics? You can't immediately identify someone with HIV/CV19. A host can remain asymptomatic for long periods while being infectious at the same time. The hosts can survive for long periods even after being infected. The incubation period varies widely. The social impact from HIV and CV19 - people are forced to distance from each other / change the way we interact out of fear of getting infected. It's been almost 40 years since HIV was first identified.
We are unlikely to find a silver bullet that can eradicate the virus. The current vaccines will most likely require regular (annual?) booster shots. If we all coorperate, slow the transmission, err on the side of caution, we buy time for the experts - doctors/scientists - to develop better understanding of the virus, more effective vaccines and therapeutics to counter the CV19 virus, then I think, in the best case scenario, this eventually gets downgraded to a similar level as influenza. I think by the time we're done inoculating everyone (or even before then), we'd have yet another strain which is able to break through the vaccine barrier and reduce the efficacy of the vaccines. As it is, we're already seeing signs of this in the B1617 strain. Fortunately, those who are infected despite being vaccinated are not seriously ill, but we not be as lucky with a future variant.
So while I do agree that this may be the new "flu" of our generation, I don't think we'd be able to get away with it as easily. Lifestyle may eventually go back to what it used to be, but it would just be because people have given up trying to control it or go back into lockdowns because govts around the world would rather protect the economy.

Changi Airport's passenger terminals as well as Jewel will remain closed to the public until the end of the Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) period, while all arrivals from "very high-risk" countries and regions will undergo additional COVID-19 testing.
All passengers arriving at Changi Airport from very high-risk countries or regions will now have to undergo on-arrival antigen rapid tests (ART) in addition to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests they currently take, said CAAS and CAG. The new testing regime took effect on Thursday.

If you can make it MANDATORY for employers to give FDWs at least 1 day off per week, I don’t see why you can’t pass a temporary law during this critical period, to stop FDWs from roaming the streets on their off days and instead, place the burden on employers to enforce a “non-law”.
While i have no problem encouraging my FDW to stay home because she has been with our family for over 10 yrs and is equally terrified of catching CV19, I can imagine there are many others who don’t enjoy this same privilege.
If you have been keeping an ear close to the ground, you would probably be aware that FDWs now have the upper hand when it comes to negotiations of employment terms due to the availability of replacement FDWs at short notice. Make it MANDATORY. “Strongly Encourage” is meaningless!

As of 12pm, MOH has preliminarily confirmed 30 new cases of locally transmitted COVID-19 infection. Amongst them, 16 had already been placed on quarantine earlier.
Based on investigations so far, the cases are in the community, and there are no new cases in the dormitories.
There are 10 imported cases, who had already been placed on Stay-Home Notice upon arrival in Singapore. All were identified through testing while they were in SHN facilities.
In total, there are 40 new cases of COVID-19 infection in Singapore today.
MOH will share further updates in its press release that will be issued later tonight.
