An escalation of tension is imminent not only in France - but throughout the whole of Europe - being physically connected and demographically similar.
Freedom of speech is a prize but wonder should it be done at the expense of others which everyone know will evoke negative emotion and violence?
Otherwise laws that safeguard slander and libel will not come into play.
Freedom of speech do come with responsibilities.
Responsiblities not to :-
(1) cause slander
(2) cause libel
(3) mock others' religion that may invoke unnecessary tension and ill-feeling. Some can take it lightly, others may react negatively and cause unnecessary violence that will harm innocents.
There is a Universal 3rd Precepts - that human must be observed to prevent undue sufferings :-
3rd Precept - Refrain from false speeches - that include no slander, no libel, no mocking and insulting others, no lying, no harsh speech, no gossiping, no talking behind others' back that will cause unhappiness.

Just like no one will be happy if someone mock or insult your parents or spouse or your kids or your siblings isn't it?
But having say so, the group that was insulted or mocked at should not response by violence or killings - because killings and violence is a crime, a sinful act - that will cause untold sufferings to others.
There are many lawful mean to seek redress such as legal claim to stop the publication and seek damages or other more rational measures.

ricky l • RemoveJust not too long ago, Historical precious Buddha statue and images at Bambiyan along the Silk Route was targeted, damaged and destroyed by Taliban.
These was an extreme provocation on Buddhism and destroying Buddha sacred images come with bad karma. But the World Buddhist circle though disquiet about the destruction did not react emotionally or cause an uproar or resort to violence.
True enough, bad karma did come and the Taliban government was toppled soon after through the volition of the bad karma.
