Next there is a need to have deep analysis of the psychological and cultural makeup of China that lead to the South China Sea maritime claim and dispute which comprise the following insights :-
(1) Historical baggage
- China has a history of sectarian civil wars and many foreign powers dividing China during the Qing dynasty - This is the prime belief of China's hardline stand on South China Sea.
- WW2 humiliation of invasion by the Japanese - This is the China's hardline stand on East China Sea.
(2) Projection of Power and Influence
- New found wealth brought by Economic success.
- Imperialism past - where surrounding Countries were the subjects of the Chinese Emperor.
(3) Military outposts and Strategic positioning
- By taking over majority of the rocks and islands in South China Sea - China will be able to push its boundaries far away from the mainland China - and there will be more reaction time to respond to military events.
(4) Communism Ideologies
- Gun and strength project Power and elicit submission.
(5) Traditional Philosophies of Peaceful Coexistence
- Fortunately, Mahayana Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism - preach peaceful coexistence - which is still the foundation on the way of lives of the China Chinese.
Having breakdown and provide insights on the psychological makeup of the China Chinese ---- it is not difficult to understand why China react and respond to the South China Sea International Court's ruling.
However, China will be facing pressure from the International Communities as International Laws guides how members of International Communities inter-operate with one another and China will certainly feel the heat of reputational costs for rejecting the International Court ruling - in which China has deep integration with the World Communities.
China will not easily relent in giving up the South China sea islands and rocks. But China will also not engage in war - that will harm China's interest in Economy and Business that have benefitted China immensely.
Soft approach will be the best to resolve the maritime issues anchor on the International Court rulings to remind China that International Laws should be respected. This will be a long and drawn out process which will take a long time to resolve. But a message must be sent that International Laws that govern how Countries inter-operate must be respected by Countries big or small --- otherwise it will become lawlessness.
Hard approach through confrontation and conflict should be avoided - as it serve no one interest to fight.
