It IS a moment of reckoning, and a historical referendum. Americans want change, but they hope for a better future - not being plunged into civil-war and a fascist-style dictatorship. This election is like Russia when Yeltsin stepped down and Putin filled the void. He delivered change in spades, but not in the right direction for the vast majority of Russians. Trump would actually be worse cause he doesn't have Putin's intelligence or discipline, or strategic mind. Trump is chaos and randomness personified.
