Singapore's value to the United States lies in its location: US ambassador nominee KT McFarland

With
US view and analysis on the world’s diplomatic chessboard, what else
can the other supposedly opposition bloc of countries do other than to
be more determined to push for the Kra Canal to by-pass Singapore, hence
from US control in order to protect their interest?

Goh Jon Hin For starters, China will be building the ECRL which theoretically bypasses S'pore (Terengganu to Port Klang)

China
Cosco and PSA joint venture to build 3 mega berth that was signed in
China to cater for increased in trade from OBOR and RCEP.
In all China has about 10 or more berth with PSA. China do not have to help us to build port. China jointly invest with us.
Trade will grow exponentially to $1 trillion within ASEAN. It was estimated that both mega trade and infrastructure initiatives are said to generate $50 trillion.
There are so much trade to go around. No need to be so worried.

With US, we can do only that much, or for that matter, that little.
Though not exactly like for like, US had not hesitated in taking over control of Panama and the canal.
I do hope this will not happen at this sea lane but cannot help thinking that History can repeat itself.
To the the other supposedly opposition bloc of countries, you can't deny them from having a contingency plan if......

ECRL could be starter but that does not solve the problems faced by the other supposedly opposition bloc of countries if the sea lane is closed to them. Kra Canal is their alternative. I believe in open seas, Law of the Sea is no different from Law of the Jungle.

If talk about Kra canal (which is about 72 hours of travelling saving) - and spend about $40 billion to build.
There are more things that you will have to worry about.
(1) Arctic North route cut travelling by half (from 40 days to 14 days)
(2) Train road from China all the way to Europe.
It is not a zero-sum game.
As more trade are open up when infrastructure open up more trade - trade will grow exponentially - more than any single one can absorb all.
There will be too many to go around.
What is important is that - "We must be friends to all and adversaries to none. We must forge mutual benefits through win-win outcome."
Then we always will have plenty or something to eat.
We must also be able to diversify and not rely only on 1 sector.
As you mention that US will seize Panama canal?
There is international law to comply - big or small.

Most important is that :-
(1) We need to maintain friendly relationship with China
(2) We need to maintain friendly relationship with US
(3) We need to maintain friendly relationship with ASEAN
(4) We need to maintain friendly relationship with Asia Pacific and the rest of the World
-- to do this, we must not be a vassal state to any foreign power - else we will not have the soveriegn rights to achieve our friendship with everyone in the World.
Why we are able to do so is because we are a small state and we can provide values to everyone - hence we able to forge and maintain friendship with everyone.
No big power can sealed up the sea lane under international law - as the sea lane must be kept open to facilitate world trade. So this should not be an issue at all.

Most important we must build and grow our virtual economy for each economic sectors.
This will be the 2nd wing to ensure that our air port and sea ports continue to thrive and flourish.
