Singapore comes under pressure over female genital cutting of babies

I think FGM must have hurt the babies alot.

But there are some cultural sensitivity, traditional sensitivity and religious sensitivity among the Muslim communities that practise it.

By imposing ban in Singapore will trigger backlash in this multi-cultural society - who are sensitive to the community's sentiment.

I feel that the Malay community will have to decide for themselves whether they are ready for a ban or should they stay status quo. Education will be an important factor to gain support.

Outright ban will trigger an unnecessary furore.

  A ban is needed.its time to tell these people to move out of the Bronze Age. And if there is an uproar? GOOD. Women in that culture have been brainwashed since infancy to never question those beliefs and customs.

  If a ban is enacted, the Malay community should come to a consensus to agreed and bring it up for enactment.

  It should not be raised by others outside the Malay community - because this touches on the community religion.

  For eg.

  (1) If cruxification is discouraged, then Christian community should come out to say yes or no --- not other community - to prevent an uproar.

  (2) If carrying kavadi (piercing of skins) or running over fire is to be discouraged - then Hindu community should come out to say yes or no --- not other community - to prevent an uproar.

  (3) If discouraging giving angpow - then Chinese community should come out to say yes or no --- not other community - to prevent an uproar.

  The above is the analogy of cultural sensitivity, traditional sensitivity and religious sensitivity.
