[10:00 am, 27/06/2022] +REACH: 📢 Topic 📢

During talks held on Saturday (June 25) in Ankara, Singapore discussed expanding agricultural and food imports from Turkey. This is in line with the Republic’s plan to step up food source diversification as some countries announced they would ban food exports, citing disruptions caused by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

"We already had begun to build up our stockpiles to a higher level and to diversify our supplies from more places," said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who was speaking to Singapore reporters at the end of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. At the same time, he urged people in Singapore to understand the situation and be more flexible in their food preferences and habits.

💬 How do you feel about Singapore’s efforts to step up food source diversification? What are some ways to encourage flexible food habits and preferences?

India announced plans this month to restrict sugar exports to curb a surge in domestic prices, following its decision in May to restrict wheat exports.

Malaysia banned chicken exports on June 1 to stabilise production and prices. This caused Singapore, which imports about a third (34 per cent) of its supply from Malaysia, to see a sharp drop in its supply of fresh chicken in the first two weeks of this month. The ban has since been partially lifted.

Hotter and wetter weather is already having an impact on crops in South-east Asia, and climate change is set to bring even greater extremes that will disrupt food supply chains and food prices in the region, global forecasting firm Oxford Economics said.

More will need to be done, and Mr Lee said the Ministry of Trade and Industry is actively working on this issue now.

Malaysia will continue to impose price ceiling on chickens, says PM Ismail Sabri.

Malaysia flip-flop again - populist measures.

Look like we better replace our fresh chicken supply from Indonesia than Malaysia.

[0:20 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Once price control reimplemented - chicken supply will not go up.

Because chicken rearers will incur loss due to high  overhead. The more they rear, the greater loss they will experience - if they are not following the economic fundamental.

Hence the chicken supply will not get solved - come end Jun.

So I guess we cannot pin high hope that Malaysia export ban to Singapore will be lifted.

Better to look elsewhere to replace Malaysia live chicken such as Indonesia.

However, there will be a challenge to get live chicken from Indonesia:-

1. Johor chicken can be live because it is transported by land - a couple of hours - no need to feed the chicken - they will still survive.

2. But Indonesia live chicken come by ships - will be more than few hours - could be a day. If don't feed the chicken - they die - then no live chicken.

3. Also need to ensure the Indonesia farm can meet our SFA health standard, proper chicken feed - fit for human consumption.

[0:20 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

A farm feeding chickens with marijuana in Thailand instead of antibiotics is fetching higher prices from consumers seeking organic poultry, researchers say.

This is crazy.

Human eat marijuana feed chicken - human will also get addicted.

[0:23 pm, 27/06/2022] +RH: Indeed!

We'll hv to read the labels more carefully next time b4 we buy, assuming tt they declare wat the chic has been fed on !

(which I highly doubt they will!)

[0:27 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

SFA will be checking and certifying chicken farm before we import from the certified farm.

Else will be a health risk to us.

That's why need some time for SFA officers to go around Indonesia farms to certify the chicken farm before they can export their live chicken to us.

Also need to solve the logistics and transportation problem - to ensure the chicken is still alive and healthy when they reach Singapore.

[0:27 pm, 27/06/2022] +BL: Seems like a good idea! You can't get affected by the marijuana after the chicken has eaten it either. So no danger to humans.

[0:28 pm, 27/06/2022] +BL: We need to use less anti biotics, or we will be helping to produce more super viruses that are immune to our medicines.

[0:29 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

My close friend comments:-

The gov efforts in sourcing of  alternatives suppliers and and stockpiling is commendable.

We should also start high tech farming eg in door fish farming using monitoring systems to control water PH level,, toxins, temp etc .

It will be very expensive but at least ensure dwindling supplies due to over-fishing and climate change.

Lab grown food is a possibility but long term safety issue is still unknown.

[0:33 pm, 27/06/2022] +RH: The study did not say wat the impact is on humans ...

Or did I miss that somehow?

Study is based on 1,000 chickens so far ...

Too low a number to laud over.

Therefore, this feeding method is still in its infancy ...

[0:41 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

I think until scientists tell us whether it is safe - we shouldn't take the risk.

[0:49 pm, 27/06/2022] +Frankie Wee: Singapore will stop eat chicken onward. We can have a fish, beef, lamb and pork.

[0:49 pm, 27/06/2022] +Frankie Wee: Also duck

[0:50 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: National dish will die

[0:53 pm, 27/06/2022] +Poh S. Lim: A chicken-free country? 🤣

[0:56 pm, 27/06/2022] +RH: 😭😭😭😭

No more Singapore Chicken Rice ...

--> Singapore Duck Rice , anyone ???

😅😅😅

[1:08 pm, 27/06/2022] +Boon: The effort is necessary. How diversified is SG today and what does the incremental effort to diversify involve? Eg, if we get eggs/food stuff from far away lands and from new suppliers, will these eggs/food stuff be more expensive than usual - which would add to food inflation? If their prices are “within acceptable range” for consumers, is our govt subsidizing these imports which can add pressure to future public finances ?

[1:15 pm, 27/06/2022] +Boon: Should the Singapore Food Agency have more visible roles - share their progress - during this period of time, let Sg know them better and thru the process, encourage more private-public engagements? They seem to have done some great but quiet work.

[1:20 pm, 27/06/2022] +jimmy chew: About time to build vertical farms in the heart lands

[1:21 pm, 27/06/2022] +jimmy chew: Or grow fruit trees on the road. Make the Nparks harvest them or get volunteers to harvest.

[1:22 pm, 27/06/2022] +Boon: I would love to see branding like Toa Payoh Kang kong or Jurong kailan 😊

[2:03 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

I think Singapore need to plant some of our crops and vegetables.

But the problem is the yield.

Being a small country, our useable land space is very limited.

The only way is to go vertical farming - by increasing yield with the same foot fall.

But still there is a limit to how much we can grow.

Our maximum vertical farm can go up to slightly 80 over floors.

Beyond 80 floors is a nightmare.

Dubai tallest building is about 100 floor - and will sway when the wind blow.

Hence we still need to import crops and vegetables - our local yield cannot feed our whole population per year.

Eg. We need 347,000 metric tons to feed our whole population.

We probably need to use whole of Singapore land space to produce that amount.

[2:04 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Vertical farming only can be use for high yield and high margin corps…

Low cost food… will not be viable…

[2:05 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: You can always copy their investment.. their portfolio are quite transparent

[2:07 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: Can we maximise vertical farming covering every available nook and corner?

[2:07 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: 347000 Metric tons need 147000 hectares meters of water . That mean whole sg become fresh after also can’t water the crops . A lot of ppl only think crops need land but it the water areas that hard to get . We even have water issue which I see will re-occur once our population hit 7-8 millions .

[2:08 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: Government must encourage citizens to grow what they can at home and in the community

[2:08 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: Where do get fresh water ?

[2:09 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: Buy from Malaysia or new water ?

[2:09 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: Hydroponic farming I believe

[2:09 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: Lower yield

[2:09 pm, 27/06/2022] +Frankie Wee: Singapore don’t have nature from Ice Mountain or river mountain

[2:10 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: True but civic responsibility has to start somehow

[2:10 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: We are over populated

[2:10 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: Ppl only think about money but never did they think land mass

[2:11 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: We can import 10 million population but food water can we self sustain

[2:11 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: Of course inflation

[2:11 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: So let's put aside like tai ker vision of 10 million citizens

[2:11 pm, 27/06/2022] +Frankie Wee: Singapore use human brain 🧠 smart work with nature growth economy

[2:13 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: Today topic is change our lifestyle to suit the country I think someone suggested one meal a day correct ? :)  restaurant no business how gov save them again ?

[2:14 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: Ngo/vwo will not be able to run welfare homes

[2:16 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Exactly.

[2:16 pm, 27/06/2022] +KL: So before Gov think and do please please ask ur civil and public servant think carefully and carefully on every single policy .

[2:17 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Singapore land is a premium and URA has carefully map out how the land is used - to give us the maximum values in economic production, liveable spaces plus farming for food.

I think we could have hit our max - and for crops and vegetables - we cannot push further anymore.

The only thing we can mass produce is lab grown meat - whereby we can produce enmass not only to feed our whole population but can even export - because cell culture meat can multiply infinitely within a small space.

But r&d is still at its infancy and some people are concern about health safety. Will need sometimes to convince the population - when the technology is more ready.

[2:20 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: Understand

[2:30 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Farming is very water intensive…

And land intensive plus labour.

We don’t have either 😅

At least cost point of view.

[2:42 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

My close friend comments:-

High tech cultivation can go underground for selected types of food.

This is like many years back when we were held ransom by neighbour's fresh water supplies.

No matter what cost benefit analysis we did, water from neighbour is cheap.

It is still very cheap today but they can choose not to sell to us.

But if we change our frame of reference, very expensive vs no supplies, then we will go for expensive high tech farming for fundamental survival.

We have to find ways to make more money..

It will take time to build these facilities and improve our know-how.

[2:43 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

My close friend comments:-

China has shown it could raise salt water prawns in desert areas. It experimented with extracting sea water salt and transport the salt to remote desert areas. Look by nearby salt water lake to extract salt, discovering the salt content was not ideal and getting scientist to fine tune the salt composition to get the formulation right.

China is also able to raise salmons in doors. A hyperactive fish that needs to swim thousands of miles. It raise salmon in big circular tanks which can induce underwater currents so the fish swim in circles etc.

[2:51 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Some of the things we can grow… like mushroom (no light just space)

Resource can be use such as recycle wooden pallet/paper waste.

[2:52 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Insect proteins yes.. doable but unless we accept and eat lol

[2:52 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. The current 小三灾 (3 minor catastrophe) - pandemic, war, global climate that trigger material supply disruption, food shortages - is an inflection point - that will threaten humanity survival.

It is a vicious cycle that happen about every 5 decades or half a century. The last being WW2.

2. People needs to step up - to try whatever small or manageable means - to raise alerts, recommend solutions and cool geopolitical tension - to prevent the snowballing of the 3 minor catastrophe to become unmanageable (though prophecy predict that it will taper off as we are now at the 2nd stage of the "Living State" (贤劫 中的 住界)。

3. But it can't be left to chance - because this 3 minor catastrope is human-made ---- due to manifestation of human greed, hatred and ignorance (贪嗔痴)。

Eg. Global climate - is due to Human ignorance - industrialisation by burning carbon heavy energy - triggering a huge buildup of carbon dioxide that warm the Earth - result in drought, flood, no fertile land for farming - resulting in crops shortage for human and animal feed, warm ocean that deplete fish stock etc.

World population is growing at an alarming rate - it is now 7.9 billion population - and will continue to grow to hit 10 billion.

By doing our math, such population growth is unsustainable - as fertile lands are shrinking, forest are remove for urbanisation - and the current traditional food source, farming method, animal cultivation - cannot feed the World population.

Very fearfully - there could be a reset by the 3 minor catastrophe - eith war, pandemic or climate conditions like rising seawater that drown lands and humans, hot weather that kill livestocks and humans.

Eg. War - due to Human Hatred and Greed - for geopolitical power, influence, greed to conquer land, manifesting political ideological differences etc --- that will have the likelihood to manifest into WW3, nuclear war and other MAD outcome (Mutually Assured Destruction).

Eg. Ukraine war can spill out of control to become NATO-Russia war and even trigger nuclear war. Taiwan is another worrying issue. Korean peninsula. Iran nuclear deal - are all worrying problems.

Eg. Pandemic - due to Human Ignorance - of mass slaughtering of animals for food -- that trigger animal jump host pandemic eg. bird flu, covid, SARs, MERs, mad cow, blah blah blah....

4. Hence vital for people to suggest, recommend and find the right antidotes - to prevent the 3 minor catastrophe from manifesting to a point until it become unmanageable and run out of control.

5. Notice that social media is a very effective tools - as it can be directed to the right people with the right messages --- that appeal to the Heart and the Mind of decision makers - whether local or foreign - online and realtime in a safe environment - as it cut across boundaries, hierarchies - and can do 360 degree appeal (上渡,下渡,横渡,竖度,无所不度). Even an effort, however small - could have an unintended good outcome - as long as our comments mean well to solve problems wholesomely - and not fuel unnecessary tension.

Eg. posting our feedback in REACH is one good example.

6. 人心能治,天道开。

If human mind and heart can be treated - Heaven Path will open for human to survive and to continue living.

[3:32 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: Feasible here?

[3:33 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Don't know.

SFA got to explore.

[3:34 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: Hope reach can update general public in due course through sfa

[3:34 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Need our biologist scientists, sustainability r&d researchers to explore and pilot test.

Singapore is in short supply of such talents.

Need to produce more.

[3:35 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: That's why we need Imported talent to assist.

[3:36 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Yes

Our universities are mainly staff by overseas talents for such high tech sustainability field and hi tech food source.

[3:37 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: Never surprising how our government foresight is.

[3:37 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

My extended families produce 2 such talents.

One will be doing his PhD to achieve a breakthrough on cell culture meat.

[3:37 pm, 27/06/2022] +Rama: Well done

[4:04 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

My close friend comments:

We are small, it's about priority. If our survival is threaten, then weigh the costs-of-not-doing vis a vis cost-benefit-analysis. We do cost benefit analysis provide we have alternatives.

My comments : Yes.

I think PM Lee won't say so alarming thing yesterday in Rwanda - if the food situation is not so serious.

I think the situation the world face is quite serious and unprecedented.

[4:45 pm, 27/06/2022] +GLCM: Yes. Unprecedented and may get worse only.

Have to ensure the country's survival.

[4:58 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

My close friend comments: In-door cultivation of plants, fish etc should fill the gap .

My comments :

I think this will be doable a few years later.

It is a medium term plan.

Longer-term plan is cell culture meat.

When successful and accepted, Singapore will be self sufficient in meat production and can even expand into export market for meat.

[5:01 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Cell culture meat still require meat(growth media component) for the raw material…

So nope don’t agree as always 🤣

[5:01 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Extraction of good cell as raw materials.

[5:02 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Or cells from eggs

[5:02 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Cultured meat in no way it is vegan as it uses living animals.

No the growth media is still from blood of animals

[5:02 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: No replacement for synthetic yet

[5:02 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Plant based meat is ready.

[5:03 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Plant based meat is not meat…

They are also using more raw material that extra from example soya beans, beer by product yeast extract…

[5:03 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Basically we eat rubbish classify as better alternative 🤣🤣

[5:03 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

They are all alternate meat.

[5:04 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Is more process then ever… so nope I will skip unless end of the world

[5:04 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: But then someone have to be lab rats… just not me 🤣🤣

[5:04 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Real meat is also as rubbish - antibiotics, trans fat, saturated fat etc - that is harmful to human beings.

[5:05 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: 🤷🏻‍♂️ I am not vegan… and eat in moderation I believe in whole foods is always better

[5:06 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: No replacement.. but culture plant based do provide options for recycle of protein 😆

[5:07 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: As the technology progress it will be better

[5:07 pm, 27/06/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Plant based meat is ready - and has hit the supermarket.

[5:07 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Till then… I will enjoy my cheap whole foods

[5:08 pm, 27/06/2022] +Ken Loh: Usually is use to feed as animal stock.. now we upgrade to sell to humans 🤣🤣🤣

Just funny to see

[5:09 pm, 27/06/2022] +Frankie Wee: https://www.greenprophet.com/2014/08/loopy-floating-agriculture-to-feed-the-middle-east/

Well it will come a day - where fertile lands can no longer sufficient to produce crops for humans - not to talk about animal feed.

Domestic animals for food could no longer be feasible for the world population.

2 things will happen.

1. Go for cell culture meat.

2. Humanity reset - where until a large part of world population vanish - global crops and meat cannot feed the world population.

The world is already currently facing this pressure - manifested by the triple whammy crisis of global warming, war and pandemic.

Medium term is indoor cultivation.

Long term have to be cell culture meat.

Else we all go hungry.

"no water, no talk...?"

- - annoymous

Foremost, in life, certain things have the natural power in dividing people and redistribute resources solely because of lacking one simple thing that is Water(水)! Perspectively, within the geography of South East Asia, there is a common sea (salt water) which all along has been a conflict of who's owning it and more than one past owners.

Secondly, water is a critical resource, besides oil, to all growing and living things. The Brahmaputra, the Ganges, the Ayeyarwady river, the Tibetan highlands, the Mekong River flows all flow from the Himalayas down to Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, India, Bhutan. Nepal, Blangadash, Cambodia, Myanmar Thailand, Vietnam and Laos! It has been like this for almost 50 millions  years - the Everest ! Southeast Asia, the Mekong river, dated 17 millions years and is the longest river stretches 4,900km flows into five Asean countries. This critical basin of drinking and living water should it be taken away or disappear will result in billions of human in disparity, into the path of disputes and the eventual hot wars! How to coexist with one and other? One simple ecological issue will evolve into many social, political and economics uncertainties! A simple answer, no choice!

On the basis of strategic resource, same argument can also be applied to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. What if the Russians decide to turn-off or to ration the oil & gas supplies ? Will the entire Europe continent chocks up, goes havoc or in total chaos? Will such scenario be played in this end game theory (put aside the further fear of a nuclear threat theory) ?

Coming back to this simple water issue, what's if certain nations decide to RATION the drinkable water flow during dry seasons (control water dams) or overflow during wet seasons until flooded (open water dams) or turn-off (close water dams) this 'free for all' flowing Himalayan water for the reason of climate changes? What other nations will do and react, MAKE rain happens? How would these downstream nations react or on the verge of hot wars with one another? Possibility, it can be a 'natural' disaster in making?

Seriously speaking, you can forget about the visions 4.0 of a new digital and electric world of all sorts, these things need water too!

This water, so plain yet so powerful and a life threatening issue! Sooner your neighbors will tell you, we need water more than else than spinning that wheels of fortune? The next time, ooze it and don't chock on that cup of drinkable water when your neighbors or buddies tell you they are short of water?

“We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one.”

1. Hence the current 小三灾 (3 minor catastrophe) - pandemic, war, global climate - is a Humantiy reset.

2. Unless 人心能治,天道开。

If human mind and heart can be treated - Heaven Path will open for human to survive and to continue living.

Humanity existence is at the edge.

Versatile - we survive.

Go on like business as usual - at inflection point, a reset takes place.
