Asia must learn the right lessons from Ukraine and continue fostering peace, cooperation and economic interdependency to avoid disaster at a potentially dangerous point in our history.
Addressing the world leaders and senior defence officials in attendance, Dr Ng concluded: "I hope that this Shangri-La Dialogue would have deepened your convictions and recharged your energies to keep our world and countries safe and free. If that was achieved, then that will be the ultimate value to all of us."

"We must heed the passionate and poignant advice from President (Volodymyr) Zelensky for pre-emption and prevention - once conflict breaks out, devastation ensues and a cure may not be possible," said Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen on Sunday .
In a speech at the final plenary session at the three-day security summit, Dr Ng added: "All Asian countries have expressed respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity as a fundamental tenet, disputes notwithstanding - even as recently as after the invasion of Ukraine... We must ensure that our deeds match our words if we are to avoid a calamity like Ukraine."
The ongoing conflict in Europe has, alongside US-China tensions, been at the forefront of conference discussions, with United States Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin warning in a speech on Saturday that the Ukraine war was a sign of the chaos and turmoil that would come with the flouting of a rules-based international order.
"The Ukrainian leaders and people will eventually decide how this war ends, but a protracted conflict will exact a devastating toll on Ukraine, Russia and the world," said Defence Minister Ng Eng Heng.
"Building confidence and strategic trust in one another is the core of pre-emption. We must continue to emphasise inclusivity and multilateralism," he urged.

Need to constantly increase our food security and be lesser reliance on other countries for food or water.

We should stop wasting money on useless ornamental plants for our greenery and transit to permaculture (i.e. grow food bearing plants) that can provide food security in a war time scenario. We should also relax the rules on the ownership of chicken-rearing to encourage some level of egg production on the household level. 30 by 30 is too little and too late. We also need to start in investing in bomb-shelters and the like.
The world order has fractured and we live in dangerous times. Biden may still be a moderate globalist, but could Trump or someone similar emerge to revive isolationism in the US? If that happens, the liberalist trade system we depend on will collapse. 6 million people crowded on a tiny island with little domestic food production. I can only imagine what will happen.

Hence, NATO will need to have the stamina to drag it out - until the inflection point of Russia invasion is no longer possible - to prevent Europe-Russia war from breaking out.
2. China rise will be inevitable as China with 1.4 billion population has a GDP per capita of US$10,500 and a GDP of about US$14 trillion. China GDP will continue to grow annually.
US has 330 million people has a GDP per capita of US$63,544 and a GDP of about US$21 trillion.
China is poise to challenge US total GDP and its per capita GDP among the population will grow.
With China huge population base - more than 4 times that of US, China will poise to overtake US in total GDP as China per capita GDP grows.
Hence US desire to contain China will grow - and geopolitical tension will be more intense.
Notably, US will intensify playing of Taiwan against China (in which China is most paranoid with).
Unless China can come to term and not let Taiwan issue - make China mad and start a war ---- then conflict within Asia Pacific region will be greatly reduced.
Dispute in South China Sea, East China Sea, China-India border --- is not a big issue that China is willing to wage war.
China by nature treasure peace and wealth over war and conflict - except Taiwan in which China view as its historical thorn in the flest and must reunified.
If China can overcome such intense desire over Taiwan - by playing long, playing calm and cool - to win over Taiwan with wits and wisdom --- then unlikely US can provoke China to start a war.
Hence, Singapore can play a role to constantly keep in touch with China -- to develop a high Emotional Resilience - to wait out for a better outcome to reunify Taiwan and not let itself be provoke into a must fight war ---- and unravel the peace and prosperity that Asia Pacific has thrive on for more than 5 decades/ half a century.

So China won't go hungry without Taiwan.
The only crux that make Taiwan so important for China - is because PLA fought a civil war with KMT army - due to ideology and the right to govern.
If China is able to play long, keep its cool, use creative response to Taiwan independence provocation or US provocation - without the need to be angry, mad and threat to invade --- then China can reunify Taiwan in the long run without the need to commit a troop or fire a shot.
Use wisdom and wit to win a war - not with troops and bullets.

3. Korea Peninsula is another historical dispute that can be hard to unravel.
N Korea is bent on survival and want to command its right to govern its people by military force.
N Korea cannot depend on economic development to keep its people happy and hence military might is its guarantor of survival and continue governance.
Hence S Korea reunification - will pose a threat to N Korea continue right to govern its people - as S Korea economy power will make N Korea continue to govern untenable.
Hence N Korea will hold its nuclear weapons close to its heart and will not let it go.
Unless S Korea can resolve this N Korea concern - reunification or denuclearisation will never happen - and Korea peninsula tension will continue to happen.

4. Middle East conflict - more or less become less intensify as Jared Kushner did a good job to bring Saudi, UAE, and some other Middle East countries closer together with Israel - signing peace deal and economic deal --- ending many decades of war between Israel and Muslim Countries.
Even Qatar issue with some Middle East countries also taper down.
The only hotspot is Iran confrontation with other Middle East Countries and Israel.
As well as Israel disputes with Palestinians. This is more likely to be localised.
Iran nuclear development and conflict with other Middle East countries is a bigger concern that can trigger a big war in Middle East.

5. US concern of China promoting Communism to the World :-
This is unlikely to be successful and China on the contrary has no will to promote communism to the world, nor will it be successful to do so as the World is too political ingrain with their governance system than adopting communism.
In fact, China society are so adapt to market economy - than going back to Planned Economy - a characterisitcs of Communism - except that the Chinese people don't have Universal Suffrage - to vote for their Government.
Characterising Democracy versus Communism --- don't hold much weight to current landscape of Global governance system.
In fact, US style of lame-duck bi-partisan deadlock governance system, multi-coalition democracy system that some democratic Countries adopted - doesn't make Governnance effective - and other Countries may not want to emulate - beccause it lead to fragmented, divisive, confrontational society - and difficult to unify the population.
Russia is suppose to be democratic - as they hold election - but still lead to an autocratic government.
So characterisation of democracy versus autocracy --- seems to be a hollow categorisation ---- whereny many Asia Countries - don't really ring a bell.
A good government versus bad government --- is a better categorisation.

What should Singapore do to ensure we learn the lesson from Ukraine and what should Asia do
1. Promote our Foreign Affair principle in the Global Stage :-
"Friends with All.
Enemies with None.
Forge Mutual Benefits with Win-Win outcome".
2. I support our Government position of Inclusivity and Multi-lateralism - of bringing World Communities together eg. in Shanga-Rila Security Dialogue, ADMM+ and many other multi-lateral dialogue forum --- to bring Countries together in dialogue, promote arbitration, mediation, forge common grounds, minimise differences, look for creative solutions to resolve difficult issues that trigger conflict and confrontation.
Look for areas to cooperation and collaboration to break the ice, promote mutual trust, understanding and reduce friction, fractures.
3. Prevent depletion of global resources such as food, water, energy, raw materials - lead to friction, and possible conflict and confrontation.
For eg.
a. Market production of water resources through recycling, desalination, extract water from air humidity etc.
b. Produce energy by going for renewable green energy sources like green hydrogen gas from H20, solar energy, safe nuclear energy etc - that relying on unclean but depleted fuel energy.
c. Develop sustainable food source eg. cell culture, tissue re-enginnering meat (through bio-reactor of multiplying healthy cell extracted from animals to grow meat infinitely) - without the need to maintain 10 times of fertile lands to grow crops for animal feeds per 1 hectare of animal meat (reduce water usage 10 times) --- as fertile lands become more barren due to flood and drought.
4. Forge and maintain many bilateral and multi-lateral military and security relationships - whereby our Government has currently done eg. ADMM+, bilateral military exercise and relationship with China, multi-lateral relationship with regional armies and global friendly armies.
5. Continue to make our National Service strong and ready.
Commit resources to develop R&D on military science and arms development.
Buy cutting edge miliary weaponry from developed Countries and ensure our army are well trained in it.
Military deterrence by ensuring a strong and capable SAF is our best bet to safeguard our National Interest and prevent any aggressor from invading us.
6. Maintain friendly relationships with our closest neighbors eg, Malaysia and Indonesia as well as with ASEAN - to invest stakes in Economic relationships with them.
7. Participate in World Forum to market our philosophy of Peace, Prosperity, Promotion of Wealth and Mutual interdependency - for Global peace and wealth creation.
8. Forge multi-lateral economic FTA, bilateral FTA - to promote trade, investment, business, travel.
