[11:02 am, 13/01/2021] +: Singapore Airlines (SIA) staff have been offered Covid-19 vaccinations by the Government, in the latest step forward in Singapore's vaccination exercise.

About 1,050 frontline healthcare officers from the Home Team will also be vaccinated for COVID-19 over the coming weeks.

📢 Topic 📢

💬 What are your views on the progress of Singapore's vaccination exercise so far?

Singapore’s nationwide vaccination drive began on Dec 30 last year. Among those who have been vaccinated so far are Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, healthcare workers and Home Team officers.

The country’s chief health scientist, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, has said that Covid-19 vaccination centres, which allow a large number of people to be vaccinated daily, will be ready soon. He added that vaccinations will also be given at polyclinics and general practitioner clinics.

[11:13 am, 13/01/2021] +: Three private hospitals here said that 50 to 70 per cent of healthcare workers are willing to get vaccinated now

TODAY also spoke to some healthcare workers from public and private hospitals

Half of them are undecided about whether to get vaccinated

Those undecided said they are worried about the possible long-term side effects

Those who want to get vaccinated now said they are doing it to protect themselves and their family

[11:17 am, 13/01/2021] +: It's a balance of taking and not taking it soon.

It is a  risk of unknown long-term effects on the vaccine vs

caughting the virus with long-term effects.

[11:18 am, 13/01/2021] +: Caughting the virus with known long-term effects.

[11:21 am, 13/01/2021] +65 9847 9001: All valid as we get more learned it good to allow freedom of expression and difference in choices because nothing is certain. My whole family love to take yearly flu jabs and I don't because I don't want to the the 1 in a million to be the one with the chosen one to have a neuro effect. Just me. They not angry nor call me coward. To me learning to respect ach other views and choices is important

Caleb

[11:22 am, 13/01/2021] +: The progress from the news sounds good and fast so far.

Ben

[11:30 am, 13/01/2021] +: Makes sense that people exposed to overseas people and environments are offered it.

Ben

[11:33 am, 13/01/2021] +: I wouldn't want to have the Sinovac jab, prefer to wait on a more reliable vaccine. This is from the WSJ but widely reported elsewhere too.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/chinas-sinovac-covid-19-vaccine-is-50-4-in-late-stage-brazil-trials-11610470581

Ben

[11:35 am, 13/01/2021] +: I'm not anxious about long term effects. There is nothing I could find that would suggest a risk, depending on which vaccine of course. Surely the short term risks are known and worse?

[11:39 am, 13/01/2021] +: Progress is hard to measure when there isn't a published plan. I realise it is complicated and they may not want to share, that's fine. We have only been given very rough statements, nothing specific. Therefore how do we respond with our views on progress? It's good they are doing frontline workers, good they are doing elderly, good they will be using many facilities. What progress is there to comment on?

[11:58 am, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. Need a time table - a breakdown of which group will be vaccinated using which vaccines.

Only then it is possible to measure against progress.

Currently, only brief mention of frontline staff and elderly are vaccinated.

The rest have no clue when and what vaccines will be vaccinated.

2. How to book the vaccination also not clear.

3. Though abit fearful what will be the long term effects of vaccination, not getting the vaccines will be far worst - in terms of our health and our economy.

Thus if our turn is rostered for vaccination, won't hesitate to take the vaccines.

Boon

[11:59 am, 13/01/2021] +: Thanks for sharing. Based on what is free to read under the eye catching "50% effective...significantly lower than earlier results", it further reported that the Sinovac jab is  "...78% effective for mild to severe cases". The 3rd para clarified that the 50% effectiveness is when the statistics included "very mild" cases of CoVID.  I would think the "78% effective for mild to severe cases" is actually a more important data point.

[0:05 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

CNA news just reported that:-

1. Oxford AstraZeneca

2. Sinovac

Are way below 90% and just above 50% efficacy.

1. Pfizer

2. Moderna

3. Spuntik

Are above 90% efficacy.

Boon

[0:07 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Numbers like % are easy to understand. Could higher effectiveness also means stronger medication/stronger ingredients?

[0:08 pm, 13/01/2021] +: eg. Morphine is way more effective as a pain-killer than panadol

Ken

[0:09 pm, 13/01/2021] +: 😅 it is not like that simple... and not necessary stronger ingredients.

[0:09 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Don't know.

Need medical experts to explain the meaning of efficacy and the ingredients used.

Both Pfizer and moderna are using mRNA which seems higher efficacy.

Boon

[0:09 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Exactly! Agreed! The question is, how has those other vaccines achieved their higher % versus those reported to be lower?

Ken

[0:11 pm, 13/01/2021] +: 😅😅 how vaccine are still not well known... in terms of why it is more effective..

No one can answer you that.

Till now vaccine respond is still a black box I can only tell you that

[0:12 pm, 13/01/2021] +: If we know then we can produce effective antibodies for our research work. But so far no one figure out what is the key to get the best respond hence the trial and everything

Boon

[0:12 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I would not disagree 😅 But are there already opinions on which are better...?

Ken

[0:13 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Can only know which part of the protein to avoid when designing antibodies example phosphate or methylated region avoid. But how to make it effective is really a trial and error. No answer to it yet.

[0:13 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Only by testing no other way now... lab test only predict not 100% certain

Boon

[0:14 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Thank you!

[0:16 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Sounds reasonable to me (I am only a layman) 👍   I believe that what is the effectiveness % based on, and how it is reported is important.

[0:19 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Singapore NUS-Duke also have a joint R&D with a US vaccine maker - using mRNA.

I think it is call Lunar covid vaccine?

Trial prove good potential.

Not sure how is the progress?

Ken

[0:19 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I have tried designing antibodies, which are basically what they do for vaccine... similar theory. Hence I can example up to a certain extent as only did twice.

[0:20 pm, 13/01/2021] +: So can roughly example the how and why... on difficulty face when making vaccine

[0:20 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Even with the same template different animal(same species) will have different results

[0:21 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Indonesia President get Sinovac vaccine jab.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asia/indonesia-jokowi-gets-first-dose-sinovac-china-vaccine-covid-19-13943982

[0:29 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Though Indonesia also got Pfizer and Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine - President Jokowi choose to get the Sinovac jab - while reserving the Pfizer vaccine for elderly.

Boon

[0:29 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Wow! 🙏

Nats

[0:30 pm, 13/01/2021] +: This is why we should hear more from people who know what they're talking about than those who just talk just to patronise lol

Boon

[0:31 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Agreed! Need experts to explain 🤓. Thanks.

Ben

[0:32 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Agreed!

Ben

[0:36 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Correct, they use different methods. I don't want to take a Vector Vaccine unless I have to and know more about it: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/how-they-work.html

Rama

[0:37 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Why is our government considering bringing this in!?

Ken

[0:37 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Err you know chicken pox vaccine is based on this right?

Ben

[0:37 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Yes Indonesia most likely need Sinovac due to not requiring -70c storage which will be nigh on impossible across developing nations.

Nats

[0:38 pm, 13/01/2021] +: China obviously

Ken

[0:38 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I mean the weaken vector model, by injecting cow pox.

Ben

[0:38 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Sure, but Chicken Pox vaccine has been around a really long time so we know the long term effects. I'm 100% supportive of vaccinations. No anti-vax here! I'm just saying there has been a rush to approve these so I'm being more cauious.

Ken

[0:39 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Rush is the worrying part hence we have so many world leader need to take the leap to do it 😅

Ben

[0:39 pm, 13/01/2021] +: And we don't know the size of the dose given to them and it they also take other vaccines too.

Ken

[0:40 pm, 13/01/2021] +: On top of wavier to companies making it and price for rushing up the vaccine and all resource to fund this.

Ben

[0:40 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I am researching what I can from established, credible and science based sources. I understand Gov has to communicate to an entire and diverse population which is extremely challenging.

[0:42 pm, 13/01/2021] +: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/viralvector.html - ok maybe not so scary, but if not 95% effective then what's the point?

[0:42 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I say that in the context of there being an alternative that is 95%!

Rama

[1:03 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Hopefully not at our expense!

Nats

[1:16 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Not if China doesn't ask about the uptake rate in a meso or micro context (aka how much of our population uses it)

Cuz ordering their vaccine is already more than adequate to maintain relations

Rama

[1:18 pm, 13/01/2021] +: So, there's a political cost irregardless!?

[1:28 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

I think China regulator has not approved any of their vaccines yet.

They are still consider trial vaccines.

[1:33 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

I think WHO only temporary approve Pfizer vaccine only - pending more long term data.

No other vaccines are given similar status.

[1:35 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

I will not be surprised Singapore may take the cue from WHO.

[1:36 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

This is the safest bet.

[1:37 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

In terms of political calculation or health safety.

Ken

[1:37 pm, 13/01/2021] +: https://www.google.com.sg/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/science/coronavirus-vaccine-tracker.amp.html

Ken

[1:39 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Think NYtimes have quite a good layman article

[1:39 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Temasek Holdings has invested in Germany BioTech (original inventor) and collaborate with Pfizer for joint manufacturing.

Rama

[1:42 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Singapore Guinea pigs!?

Caleb

[1:44 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I guess that why china vaccines have not reach Sg yet

Ken

[1:44 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Based on this err if we start then maybe

Caleb

[1:44 pm, 13/01/2021] +: If WHO and not many counties approve to use it in emergencies.

Ken

[1:45 pm, 13/01/2021] +: If you consider phase 3 as testing.. 😅

Nats

[1:47 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I find the question sensationalised

[1:51 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

So far only Pfizer-Biotech vaccine is the only vaccine approve for used in Singapore.

This align with WHO endorsement.

Ken

[1:53 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Err is emergency use only.. not full approval

[1:54 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Current there are 8 approve for emergency use by WHO

REACH

[2:03 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Singapore, Malaysia to work closely to keep supply chains going amid state of emergency: Chan Chun Sing

Singapore and Malaysia will continue to work closely to keep supply chains going amid the movement control restrictions and state of emergency declared in Malaysia, said Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing on Wednesday (Jan 13).

More: https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/singapore-malaysia-to-work-closely-to-keep-supply-chains-going-amid-state-of-emergency

[2:15 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

I search the web, only found Pfizer-Biontech vaccines got approval by WHO for emergency use.

Moderna and other vaccines - WHO did not say anything.

But individual Countries eg. US FDA, EU approve moderna

Ken

[2:22 pm, 13/01/2021] +: https://www.raps.org/news-and-articles/news-articles/2020/3/covid-19-vaccine-tracker

[2:25 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

I could be wrong.

But the vaccines tracker did not mention WHO.

Anyway, I am not a medical profession, I leave it to the good hands of medical experts and the government to make the best decision for us.

Ken

[2:26 pm, 13/01/2021] +: This one does

[2:28 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I am surprise that they didn’t include that Fosun pharma is actually a China company.. but only talk about the first 2. Wonder why they omit it.. lol

[2:29 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Moderna and Sinovac and the rest of vaccines - WHO name did not appear.

[2:33 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

So I think our government did take the cue from WHO - by choosing Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Strategically, it is sound.

1. Politically - external and domestic.

2. Health safety.

[2:34 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Fosun Pharma is also a co-developer of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Why didn't acknowledge Fosun Pharma?

Ken

[2:35 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Lol... and Pfizer only come in much later in the development from Google search

[2:35 pm, 13/01/2021] +: 🤣🤣

[2:35 pm, 13/01/2021] +: So much for branding

[2:37 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

May not be branding.

Trump administration hammer China big time.

Fosun Pharma may not want to surface their name in case US sanctions the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Rama

[2:38 pm, 13/01/2021] +: As minister shanmugam said, profit before truth!

Ken

[2:40 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Start in March 13, with BioNTech and Fosun

[2:40 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Research funded by BioNTech, Pfizer did the study

[2:50 pm, 13/01/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

So Fosun Pharma merits cannot be taken away.

Anyway China helps the world vaccines maker by publishing the covid genetic code first.

Without which, vaccines can't be developed.

[3:02 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Geylang Serai Hari Raya Bazaar to be held online on new digital platform due to COVID-19 outbreak

The annual Geylang Serai Hari Raya Bazaar will continue to be held online this year, said the People's Association (PA) on Wednesday (Jan 13).

"In view of the evolving COVID-19 situation, physical bazaars and trade fairs, which traditionally attract large crowds, will not resume," said PA in a media release, adding that for residents' safety and wellbeing, the Geylang Serai bazaar will continue to be held online and on a new digital platform.

En

[3:20 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Top 10 things to know about COVID-19 vaccination:

1.    Only vaccines that are safe and effective will be used in Singapore. Only Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is approved for use now.

2.    We want as many people to get vaccinated as possible. Take the vaccination when it is offered to you. This will not only protect you, but also our loved ones (including those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons). This will help us open up our economy safely and protect our livelihoods.

3.    Vaccination will be free and voluntary for all Singaporeans and long-term residents.

4.    The vaccines are coming in batches. So vaccination will be carried out in phases, starting with priority groups. Healthcare workers are currently being vaccinated followed by our elderly residents.

5.    The vaccine will be offered to all Singaporeans and long-term residents by the end of 2021.

6.    As with all vaccines, there is a small risk of side effects. There will be doctors and nurses around to observe you for 30 minutes after you receive the vaccination.

7.    A vaccine injury financial assistance programme will support those who develop serious side effects. Few are expected to require this.

8.    When the vaccine is offered to you, you will be asked to make a booking before going to a designated vaccination site.

9.    Vaccination is important but it has to be combined with safe management measures, good hygiene practices, contact tracing and more extensive testing to deter and detect cases.

10.    Let us all play our part, stay united so that we can overcome and emerge stronger from this crisis.

Ken

[3:21 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Any CNY ones?

Nats

[3:22 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I'm actually more curious about CNY in general and not just the physical crowds in Chinatown

Like how will we actually celebrate it this year? Maybe can hear from those who already have a plan or something? I personally have no plans yet 😬

Ken

[3:23 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Lol CNY headache need to have schedule or what for visitor? 🤷🏻‍♂️

[3:23 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Can we just skip this year?

Nats

[3:24 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Or maybe limit it to just close relatives ba

Ken

[3:26 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Close relative also some family are huge mah

[3:26 pm, 13/01/2021] +: 3 aunt with kids and husband already overshoot Liao

[3:27 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Some family are just huge

Nats

[3:27 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I understand, mine is huge too but lmao it boils down to whether the relatives are actually close like for myself, I'm the one who accompanies my grandparents to their medical appointments and not any of the other grandchildren so yeah 🤷‍♂️

Ken

[3:28 pm, 13/01/2021] +: For me only meet once a year.. so if don’t meet will be quite bad lol

[3:28 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Can say not close but that’s the only time we meet 🤣

Nats

[3:33 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Lol would be interesting to see how people deal with packing angpaos (or sending electronic ones) cuz it's technically still an obligation 😅

WilsonLeong

[3:47 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Is ok to be hawker also can make money

Ken

[3:50 pm, 13/01/2021] +: What’s wrong with hawker... some earn so much more then degree grad

[3:51 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Grab driver.. really depends on person bah..

Some driver, some insurance agent, every job as long as hard earn don’t see it as a issue

Elena

[3:57 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Ya agree...

[4:16 pm, 13/01/2021] +: On the pre text that he/she pays for their own degree.

Lol cause I paid for mine so... if don’t need degree don’t waste my money 🤣

REACH

[5:13 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Over 6,200 people in Singapore received Covid-19 vaccine so far; 4 vaccination centres operational by end-Jan

More than 6,200 people have received their first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine since Singapore kicked off its vaccination drive on Dec 30, with eight vaccination centres to be set up by the end of February, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said on Wednesday (Jan 13).

[5:30 pm, 13/01/2021] +: I just found something not that right.  We know where the COVID-19 carrier went, but we do not know how they went there. By taxi? Bus or MRT? Are there any more people affected by them if they took public transport?

Caleb

[5:42 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Can't trace

[5:42 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Other then with TT

[5:42 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Majority  don't do SE at public transport

[5:44 pm, 13/01/2021] +: And no SE On the particular train the person took.

Berny

[5:45 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Thats why we need TT

[5:45 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Then go toilet how? Scan SE also?

[5:45 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Imagine if the infectious person doing their business at the cubicle next to yours, mask down

Caleb

[5:46 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Don't go to public transport toilets lor.

[5:46 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Only go with those that do SE

Nats

[5:47 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Stepping in as SME for what you mentioned here,

Should be easier to track for taxis since drivers would ask riders to scan the SE QR

However, the same can't be said for actual mass PT (my actual area of expertise) because who bothers (not even I) to scan QR codes when we're all bus-y chasing chiobus bus-es and training our fitness by chasing after trains?

The only way out is still back to a collective suggestion by a handful of people here and also some who left or got posted out of this group:

Everyone use only one registered ez-link card, use this data to track whereabouts of people

Interestingly, I was in the Transportation Research Board (TRB)'s AP090 Transit Data Committee meeting yesterday and data isn't unavailable, it's whether we can put it to good use or not.

Remember our tap in, tap out data that the LTA didn't think much of initially and thought it was just garbage? This garbage now helps them plan better.

Now, bringing the same thing into the COVID COntext, privacy is of course an issue because of y'know, TT data being used (CPC and all that saga recently)

I already brought this up to the LTA so it's not unknown, it's whether a successful implementation can be achieved if they want to go with it.

Caleb

[5:49 pm, 13/01/2021] +: Maybe ezlink card and simplygo records, be on a volunteer basics?
