[1:01 pm, 04/09/2020] +: 📢Topic 📢

How can we play our part to build a society where everyone has a place that is valued equally?

During the debate on the President's Address, Second Minister for Education Maliki Osman said that Reducing inequality will get harder amid globalisation and digitalisation, and there must be consensus on the kind of social compact Singaporeans want and how to pay for it.

He said the Government is paying very close attention to the issue and outlined how it aims to achieve absolute social mobility, where everyone can progress together.

He pointed to how the Ministry of Education (MOE) has made significant moves to address this by taking into account the skills and abilities of individual students and going beyond grades and paper qualifications. It is also working to enhance access to quality and affordable pre-school education for all, so that all children will have a strong foundation to temper any inequalities they might face.

He said, "We must remain committed to the fundamental aim of Singapore being a place where our efforts are rewarded not just in economic terms, but also in the quality of life we enjoy; and a society where everyone has a place that is valued equally."

[1:08 pm, 04/09/2020] +: The reality is that everyone cannot be valued equally, but everyone can be given equal opportunity and respect. We are different, and celebrating our differences is what makes a good society. We have different roles to play, but each role is important and relevant. What's valuable to one person may not be valuable to another, however there is always room for respect and appreciation. They are most important!

This is not a policy question, it's an education question.
How have we been taught about success in life? What do we see ourselves in living this life?
If we have been brought up to measure life in $ sense, then we will be very miserable in this pandemic. We'd lost our wealth or down the road we are going to lose our hard earned money through investment fallouts and financial systems crashing. All of a sudden, we feel worthless and lousy.
If we were brought up to think about making a difference in life, then for as long as our basic needs are met (food, roof over our head, basic healthcare and transport ) then this is a great time to look around us and help those in need.
Then, don't we feel great and more equal than others? Let doing good fill the void of not having fun holidays. Let our minds search out those who need help, let our hearts be filled by the smiles from those whom we are able to help.
If the population have this mindset, then what gov needs to do is to ensure we don't starve.

I learned from an elderly. He went through the Great Depression and had passed on many years ago.
During the difficult times, he let go of the most capable people in the business and those who can find jobs outside. Did it make sense at all?
Yes, to him. This is to ensure basic survival. And he had to scrimp and save in order make ends meet. In the end, he never got rich but earned respect from all around.
Can Singaporeans do this? Or is this "stupid" in today's value system?

------
[3:49 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Pragmatic
[3:50 pm, 04/09/2020] +: This is going to be tough as the disparity of the top 5% and the rest grows. Policies that push for more social mobility are needed. Education alone usually isn’t enough though. Many middle class are highly educated but are struggling these days not to fall below their strata.

Sharing an experience:
A boss want a guy to fire some of his poor performing guys.
But he didn't do so.
He leave the job instead.
His justifications:  they did not do anything wrong and they can deliver their work that he gave them.
What makes him do it is "Compassion".
They have whole family to feed.

[3:52 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Agree
[3:54 pm, 04/09/2020] +: I am not sure cause I manage to climb up the social level. Poor I do consider my family to be middle low income family.
Education key to going up the society I do think is part of it, as well as up bringing by parents. Broken family tend to had it worst. My family isn’t perfect but my mum hold it together and just a normal poor family without not many things to worry.
Slowly but surely you will get there one step at a time.
[3:55 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Bro you make it doesn’t mean others made it
[3:55 pm, 04/09/2020] +: You need to speak to others around you
[3:56 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Not so sure... cause my friend circles most made it. We are all from humble background and a step at at time.
[3:56 pm, 04/09/2020] +: I do meet some that I don’t know how to help as well.
[3:57 pm, 04/09/2020] +: I just ended meeting with FT of higher caste who is by position the highest in the group. While I was not targeted today, I felt very sorry for those who had suffered his sovereign and superior attitude. The integration of these higher caste people into SG needs education both for them and for us.

[4:00 pm, 04/09/2020] +: If gov didn’t tighten EP and quotas I might still be stuck at a low pay in IT

But then again someone can be unlikely all their life.

But Forgetting the importance of Happiness..
.. how much success gives Happiness if One is not enjoyed the Process of attaining it?!
Why Parents& children More Stressed For grades?!
Because only the Children who Excell in grades are able to Get in to University. And All parent want their Children to Go university.
Why not change the Whole System of it?!
A more diversified Universities For all Different sectors.. and giving option To Each Student who wants to get A UNI degre…

[4:16 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Special needs is a totally different line of issues. Our support for special needs are well known to be not enough.
Due to her limitation in work capacity, hence the pay is relatively low. To up her pay, yes we can have progressive increase in pay.
The society have to recongise money won’t come from no where. To give everyone a fair share, cost will have to increase as well. Hence, stuff have to be slightly more expensive to take inconsideration of paying her a decent salary.
Government can help but reducing her transport fair, tax, housing, education, increase job opportunity so that her reduce capacity to earn a decent living won’t affect her standard of living.
[4:16 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Understand Minister Grace Fu said earlier not likely!?

Comments on the "free rider"
Yes free rider stoke negative responses in social media.
But there's some truth to the label.
Eg. Now the opposition ward is serve not only by elected opposition MPs but also PAP advisers of MP quality are also serving the ward.
On top of it the ward also enjoy national infrastructure built like new MRT being built, HIP home improvement program.
So even if get opposition MPs, the ward are served by the government.
This is a free rider - where one enjoy both sides of the privileged even though the voters vote for the oppositions.
Other wards don't have 2 sides privileged.
But I think now is going to change.
Voters may have to live with the consequences of being served by oppositions MP only.
They vote for what they get.

-----
[5:56 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Please lor PAP use MRT as bargaining chip during GE one
This is something which I will shut down so hard in their face when the time comes
----

[5:58 pm, 04/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Else voting for opposition instead of the incumbent seems to be an incentive - where one eat both sides of the cake without consequences.

[6:07 pm, 04/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
And one day, if this happens, we will find the PAP overthrown through a fluke unintended election result.

----
[6:11 pm, 04/09/2020] +: If opposition wins, let them show their worth. No point talking about free riders.  If don't perform, kick out next election!
[6:12 pm, 04/09/2020] +: but that's the very nature of democracy... the people are given a choice, whether the choice is right or wrong or it's going to land them in an uh-oh situation like Brexit because they listened to either side of the campaign, that's a choice that they have made and they have to live with the consequences.
[6:17 pm, 04/09/2020] +: The losing party should just sit back and see how capable the winning party is! Then, possibly the residents will wake up!
[6:17 pm, 04/09/2020] +: We want to look forward - what the parties can do in future not going backwards - what party had done in the past.
[6:17 pm, 04/09/2020] +: We appreciate the pioneers effort but we cannot simply vote for them just because the things they have done for us before... They get what they deserve - in term of salary and bonuses as well
[6:21 pm, 04/09/2020] +: yeah, so imho, there is no need to use harsh words like "they have to repent", or "free riders" because that's the nature of the political system. that's the people's choice and even if they've been conned into that choice, that's their choice. no need to call the opposition "disingenuous" either. the people were given a choice, they shouldn't be "over-parented" because if a certain argument appeals to them, that's their choice. it's democracy. that's just my view lah, i never believe in mudslinging.
[6:24 pm, 04/09/2020] +: I’m sure they having some financial assistance but my in laws are both retired as well
[6:24 pm, 04/09/2020] +: So they rely on her with com care assistance I think
[6:24 pm, 04/09/2020] +: My wife gives them monthly allowance also
[6:25 pm, 04/09/2020] +: So it can go a long way but if any big spending suddenly will gg

[6:26 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Regarding the free rider term
[6:26 pm, 04/09/2020] +: I think it’s used wrongly
[6:30 pm, 04/09/2020] +: A more suitable term will be “be careful what you wish for”

[6:33 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Yes hence he should say be careful what you wish for
-----

[6:33 pm, 04/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Actually I am more concern about the outcome of the unintended fluke result - rather than offended by the label "free riders".
It is a term use in economic to represent public benefits extended to all - even though you don't opt for it.
In economic term, free riders is not insulting.
It explains the phenomenon of a public good.

----
[6:33 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Often times ppl just want a certain result without thinking of the true consequences
----

[6:38 pm, 04/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Free rider used in layman language is insulting.
But use in economic is not - it explains the phenomenon of benefiting from a public good even though you don't pay for it.
Social media people take its literal layman meaning of "free riders" and find it offensive.
Those who study economics understand its economic meaning and don't find it offensive.

-----
[6:38 pm, 04/09/2020] +: You want my terminology?
Fare evader
HAH DONE
[6:39 pm, 04/09/2020] +: even if it is, consider the optics of it
[6:41 pm, 04/09/2020] +: 😄👏🏻
-----

[6:42 pm, 04/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Simple explanation is "you buy one you get 2".
The 2nd one you get which is " free" in economic term is known as a "free rider".
Rightfully, if a person buy one you get one.

[6:44 pm, 04/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
But politics is not economics.
Even if this is explained, some people will still find it offensive.

-----
[6:45 pm, 04/09/2020] +: So by that logic, electric buses (which cost more than diesel because of infra as well) are a fare evader "free rider" component?
Everyone will understand when the fare hike comes and everyone asks me why so ex. So why so ex? Cuz "electrixity"
You didn't ask for it, LTA have to stick with LTMP2040 to have a good standing in the world mobility and public transport stage
-----

[6:45 pm, 04/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Because politics is emotions over logic - even though the logic is factually right.

[6:57 pm, 04/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Ng chee meng as labor chief not for sengkang GRC.
It is for Singaporean workers.

----
[6:52 pm, 04/09/2020] +: https://www.straitstimes.com/business/economy/20b-plan-to-supply-solar-power-from-australia-to-spore
[6:52 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Maybe this will bring the cost down?
[6:53 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Like in sengkang grc, u vote for wp, and u still have ng chee meng as labour chief?
[6:55 pm, 04/09/2020] +: By cost I mean you'll have to install chargers to accommodate the buses, as compared to the diesel counterparts which already have the infrastructure in place
Furthermore, range anxiety and reliability continues to be a problem in electric buses, especially after BYD was found to have given inaccurate figures to a U.S. PTO and how many of the buses are found to have cracks after a few years of service
And generally, e-buses have a shorter lifespan than a typical diesel bus
15 years in SG, 12 years in the U.S.
As compared to 17-21 years for a diesel bus here
[6:58 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Yes
[7:01 pm, 04/09/2020] +: So I really don't fathom the term, free rider. I would prefer hoarder. Most of the people were extremely stressed and when pressured to make a decision during this period, u would have expected such results.
[7:04 pm, 04/09/2020] +: ? Why tag me... don’t know her well in school 🤣
[7:05 pm, 04/09/2020] +: lol! cos you said you know her mah.... :P
[7:05 pm, 04/09/2020] +: 24 mutual friends horr
[7:05 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Know her don’t mean know her well mah 😓
If her friend would have added her Liao lol
[7:05 pm, 04/09/2020] +: She drama side one lol
-----

[7:07 pm, 04/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
I don't disagree that people are frustrated and some feel despair worrying about jobs and business.
I am not surprised by the election result.
I am not equally offended by the term free riders - because in economic term it is an appropriate description of the phenomenon.

[7:37 pm, 04/09/2020] +: I agree, I know PM Lee but he dunno me 😂
[7:38 pm, 04/09/2020] +: In recent news, the term “quality” foreign worker has appeared in our govt’s uses. This is another potential divisive term - what is quality? Does it mean that a foreigner employed in the future means that no quality Singaporean could be found?
Would there also be “quality” foreigner versus “non-quality” foreigners? Just like “foreign talent”, “quality foreigners” can be divisive too.
[7:39 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Similarly, what is a “Singapore core” should be debated and for people to have a common understanding of what should it mean?
[7:40 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Received as a forward
[7:43 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Obviously, the person who created this thought that Singaporeans shouldn’t be employed in such jobs. To such people, does  a Singapore core mean Singaporeans in nicer title jobs while foreigners should take these “lower sounding” jobs? If so, aren’t we dividing our own society in this way too? Therefore, pls debate publicaly, what should “Singapore Core” means - and one things for sure, it should include mutual respect, and inclusiveness.
[7:43 pm, 04/09/2020] +: With considering the cost is likely to be higher in the short term as infrastructure is put into place? Also the bus designs are quite new, so might take an iteration to get right? Diesel is going, and we need an alternative source of energy. Electric may not be perfect right now, but still beats spewing toxic gases into the public and the costs that has on health and wellbeing.
[7:45 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Wow,  that's a great way to incentivise local hiring and offsetting any additional costs of local labour.
[7:45 pm, 04/09/2020] +: 👍
[7:45 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Lol I do have MP friend just not her 🤣
Grassroot leader for so long sure will know a few one lar
[7:46 pm, 04/09/2020] +: 👍
[7:46 pm, 04/09/2020] +: It is understanding and showing respect and appreciation that will lead to a win-win for everyone. These should start from school - and parents attitude too.
[7:46 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Buses here with the lowest emission standard, Euro 3 numbers less than 200
There's a lot of Euro 4 and Euro 5 buses where Euro 6 is also quite numerous but the numbers eventually dwindle as we shift to Diesel Hybrid and Full Electric
No matter what emission standard it is, what's most important is maintaining the buses well. I have seen Euro 5 buses spew out smoke. Euro 5.
[7:47 pm, 04/09/2020] +: 🙏
[7:47 pm, 04/09/2020] +: Yes,  this is not a good phrase to use.  Quantity v Quality is not appropriate for describe human labour. Quality implies others are no good, and Quantity implies there are too many. Very poor choice of language.
