[12:17 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 📢 Topic 📢

The benefits offered by MediShield Life are set to be widened from next year, with proposed yearly claim limits raised from $100,000 to $150,000, to better protect Singaporeans against exceptionally large bills arising from long or multiple periods of hospitalisation during the year.

However, to cover the rising healthcare costs and the additional benefits, premiums are also expected to go up next year.

The Government will continue to subsidise up to 50 per cent of MediShield Life premiums for about half the population, in addition to the subsidies the Pioneer and Merdeka Generations get. These are permanent premium subsidies that provide help to at least half the population.

In addition, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said the Government will soften the impact of the premium increase with a special COVID-19 subsidy for the first two years.

Together with existing subsidies, in the first year, all Singaporeans will get a 70 per cent subsidy on the increase. This goes down to 30 per cent in the second year.

The Government has promised that every Singaporean and PR will be covered by MediShield Life from birth to death, with no one left out.

How will the proposed benefits and widened coverage under Medishield Life benefit you and your family?

Public can also provide their feedback on the recommendations here: https://www.moh.gov.sg/e-consultation/mshl2020

Rama

[12:29 pm, 30/09/2020] +: The job situation for local is gloomy so if prolonged, how much can family help tonto up?

Ana

[12:41 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Curious how this will affect homemakers like my mum.

Rama

[12:41 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Good question

Berny

[1:03 pm, 30/09/2020] +: In view of the current pandemic situation, I think it would be nice if both CPF and MOH allow Singaporeans to defer the payment for up to two years if they are unable to do so for various reasons, interest-free.

Jimmy Chew

[1:06 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I thought the government is there to buffer the increase. Seems that the citizens has to bear it. No money and squeeze some more 😜🤣

[1:06 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Government for the citizens or for the insurance company?

Berny

[1:07 pm, 30/09/2020] +: the subsidy is there to buffer for 2 years ma, can't expect them to pay for everything without tax increase

SS

[1:07 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Perhap a deferement would help those who are facing financial hardship at least for next year . perhap defer by 6 months?

Boon

[1:07 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 👍

Berny

[1:08 pm, 30/09/2020] +: On national level, the reserves must continue to grow no matter what the situation is, this is to fight for emergency and inflation

[1:08 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 2 years would be better imo, the first year after the situation improves, most facing hardship would channel their funds to repay the backlog (eg. loans, housing, etc)

SS

[1:09 pm, 30/09/2020] +: but growing at the expense of those who cannot afford to do so at this time, i think that shouldnt be the focus now? Instead of growth of country reserve, we should grow in term of providing them jobs or necessary skills which i think they are trying to do so now.

[1:09 pm, 30/09/2020] +: fair enough.

[1:10 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

This medisave scheme is to ensure that whoever get serious illness and need hospitalisation, no one will be left out and not get treated.

Hence, this pool insurance scheme.

Berny

[1:10 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yes, they are focusing on jobs, but on a national level, I don't think any government will just focus on 1 issue at a time. I am pretty sure that this increase is an additional layer of safety net, in case those who are facing hardship suddenly gets admitted to hospital

SIA ditches ‘flight to nowhere’ idea, rolls out A380 restaurant, delivery menu and training facilities tour

By NG JUN SEN

Published29 SEPTEMBER, 2020

SIA will be offering lunch to customers on board a parked superjumbo A380 at Changi Airport on two afternoons in October

The airline abandoned the flight to nowhere idea after a review and has no plans to revive it

From Oct 5, customers can order SIA’s First Class and Business Class food for a home dining experience with amenities intended to* recreate the flight experience*

A behind-the-scenes tour of SIA’s training facility will be held over two November school holiday weekends and includes access to its flight simulator, a grooming workshop

Customers can “recreate the SIA onboard experience at home” by watching aircraft cabin videos and listening to a specially curated playlist

The tour dates are set for Nov 21, 22, 28 and 29, and bookings commence from Nov 1.

In recent weeks, the idea attracted flak from people who were concerned about the carbon impact created by these flights, while others defended such flights — which a few airlines are pursuing — as a way to help the ailing national carrier cope with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Goh Choon Phong, SIA chief executive officer, said: “There has been a lot of interest in our customer engagement initiatives over the last few weeks, and I would like to thank everyone for their great ideas and suggestions. We are very encouraged by and grateful for the enthusiasm and passion that we have seen.”

My comments -

"SIA is now burning money.

Analysts say that airlines can only rebounds 2024 - 4 years later.

Now barely a few months, all money raised $8 over billion - half have been used up.

https://sg.yahoo.com/news/singapore-air-burns-through-half-of-cash-raised-in-two-months-022446513.html

My close friend contribution :-

SIA can explore this :-

Instead of visiting the airport, visitors also take a fake air flight with in-flight meal.

Not a bad idea as airlines can also earn revenue through such passenger visit.

Revenue not great but in support of SIA, enjoy a meal enjoy in flight entertainment. Can also have fake captain announcements.

A whole package approach -

And this is package with sg local tours and staycation initiatives.

Check in thru changi airport, board flight, enjoy meal, in flight entertainment, "disembark" received by local tour guides, check into sg hotels. Etc

Impt to invoke nationalistic response to help sg companies and businesses

Asian financial crisis, south Koreans aunties and grannies donated their gold jewelleries

SS

[1:12 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I like the idea of viewing their train facilities and perhap families can bring their child for a visit to garner interest. next up having a chance to eat inside the aircraft that is something i would like to try for sure. But would it be costly to convert it to be a dining venue for a short term or long term ?

Berny

[1:13 pm, 30/09/2020] +: gold price increasing now 🤭 good to keep some under the bed or pillow if anyone got spare cash lying around

Jimmy Chew

[1:13 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Sounds like a playbook from animal farm. 🤣

Berny

[1:13 pm, 30/09/2020] +: everyone is equal, but some are more equal than the others?

Jimmy Chew

[1:14 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Good years will come. Work harder and contribute, while the pigs enjoy themselves

[1:14 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

It is a joint co- scheme whereby those who are working and contribute to CPF medisave - will pay for the insurance programme.

The government also help to co-pay.

Berny

[1:15 pm, 30/09/2020] +: on a side note, I wonder how Sembawang temple is coping with the rebuilding, wonder if there are any subsidy from anywhere going in or not

Jimmy Chew

[1:16 pm, 30/09/2020] +: https://g.co/kgs/UG55pC

[1:19 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yeah I charge you $50 and pay you $50 and after two years. You got to pay for life 😂

[1:20 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Without this medisave scheme, there are 3 options:-

1. People buy their own private insurance and pay a hefty monthly or yearly premium.

2. Don't buy insurance, use their own money or saving to pay.

3. Cannot afford, don't get treatment and wait for the final day.

This scheme is self pay, the whole nation pay, government co-pay - everyone got treatment, premium lower.

I think is a good scheme.

Also government pay 4% interest on medisave balance - so not too bad.

Sam

[1:20 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Government already provide a huge subsidy for hospital bill especially for class C ward. The balance amount need to be settled by the patient. As they have reviewed the claim for the past few years and  found that the coverage is still not sufficient, it is either increase the coverage or let the patient bear higher medical expenditure. In such situation, higher insurance cover is always preferred as increase in premium is affordable as compared to huge bill. Lower income family will enjoy bigger premium subsidy nevertheless. And medishield life premium is from medisave. So there is no direct impact on disposable income.

Berny

[1:21 pm, 30/09/2020] +: when item 3 happens, people will cry father cry mother, and create fake news saying that gahment no take care of own people but take extra care for foreigners and/or pr

Jimmy Chew

[1:22 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Where medisave savings come from? Where does your cpf money comes from?

Sam

[1:23 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Option 3 not likely, if proven unaffordable, medifund will be available for help.

Berny

[1:23 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 50% employer and 50% from you, take it that the medisave comes from the employer part and you pay for the housing and/or retirement

[1:23 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Our government is compassionate and will not let such thing happens.

Mr LKY long time back pledge and I think our PM say the same thing, no one who need hospitalisation treatment will not get it.

But everyone must chip in to co-pay.

Sam

[1:23 pm, 30/09/2020] +: It is either you use medisave to pay premium or to pay the hospital bill. Which would you prefer?

Berny

[1:24 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Correct me if I'm wrong ya, but I know we can transfer CPF monies to immediate family members, does it apply to medisave as well?

[1:24 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

I think can.

-----

[1:21 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/commentary/us-dollar-exchange-rate-fed-interest-saving-budget-deficit-covid-13155722

[1:21 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. US domestic savings plunge.

2. US budget deficit widen (higher public debt)

3. US current account deficit increasing (import exceed export,  interest earning and dividend fall)

These triple whammy will cause a sharp drop in US currency.

Singapore hold quite a big amount of US$ for trade and as a financial hub - for currency exchange as well as holding US currency as part of our reserves.

Singapore with this news must hedge against the devaluation of US currency that will deplete our reserves wealth.

[1:21 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

The fourth important factor is that FED will maintain a 0 interest rate for a long time even if inflation go above 2%.

This make holding US currency extremely undesirable - as the value of US currency will keep depreciating.

I think we may need to maintain more bilateral currency swap with all our main trade partners eg. Yuan, euro, yen, Aussie dollars, ASEAN currencies etc instead of using US currency as money exchange for trade.

We only keep some amount of US currency that are required for trade, and exchange.

While we keep yuan, euro or some major currencies as  reserves rather than predominantly US currency.

Berny

[1:24 pm, 30/09/2020] +: It is happening, let's face it, while most of the needy gets subsidy from social workers in hospital, there are some with inflated ego who refuse to do so and create fake news

Sam

[1:25 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I have already mentioned that government can only subsidise to certain extend, which is a lot. Do you prefer to pay what is not subsidised by cash or medisave or insurance coverage?

Berny

[1:25 pm, 30/09/2020] +: not to mention, CPF monies got higher interest rate compared to bank

[1:26 pm, 30/09/2020] +: and ownself volunteer top up cpf money got some extra perks I think

[1:27 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Our government reserves don't fall from the sky - many decades of hard work to accumulate.

This covid-19 already make the government draw out $100 billion - and all gone within 6 months.

Temasek $306 billion take 40 years toeaddy accumulate.

We already use 1/3 of it.

Jimmy Chew

[1:28 pm, 30/09/2020] +: What about the low Income? They don't have enough to survive. 🤣

Ken

[1:28 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 😢

Berny

[1:28 pm, 30/09/2020] +: got many assistance out there ma

[1:28 pm, 30/09/2020] +: comcare from CC, SSO got their own assistance, some VWO take care of certain estate, hospitals have social workers to guide them

[1:28 pm, 30/09/2020] +: even the recent covid assistance

[1:30 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

That's why you have 3 options;-

1. Buy your own insurance

2. Pay from your own savings

3. Wait die

If you don't want to pay from medisave scheme.

Choose one.

Berny

[1:31 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I choose 4. create fake news on social media to stir the ground sentiments 🤭

[1:32 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Then pofma will come or other law will come in.

Berny

[1:32 pm, 30/09/2020] +: it will, but at times like this, pofma is moving quite slowly if you realise, fake news judgement stopped after election

[1:33 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

So let them choose the 3 options if they object to medisave scheme.

Berny

[1:33 pm, 30/09/2020] +: speaking of pofma, can we also talk about poha? protection from harassment act

Rama

[1:33 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yes

Jimmy Chew

[1:34 pm, 30/09/2020] +: That's why you have 3 options;-

1. Buy your own insurance

2. Pay from your own savings

3. Wait die

4. Create fake news

If you don't want to pay from medisave scheme.

Choose one.

[1:34 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Interesting thoughts

Rama

[1:34 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 1 back up by 2. If die, better instantly!

jimmy Chew

[1:35 pm, 30/09/2020] +: What make people create fake news that poor people can't afford increase in taxes, utilities and cost if living.

[1:35 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

5. Pay from medisave scheme is cheaper and better than all the options.

jimmy Chew

[1:35 pm, 30/09/2020] +: The old have to collect card boxes to survive?

Rama

[1:35 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 😒😔😞

Berny

[1:36 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I'm speaking on a true story which happened on me.

- I've been harassed by this resident at workplace for a year plus

- December last year, I decided that enough is enough and went to Court to lodge a magistrate complain

- Court asked police to investigate, the IO wasn't keen on the case during the interview ("I've got no time, just play the important part of the voice recording")

- Court subsequently throw out the case and deem it as no case

- Police called me up and told me that this guy has mental issue and POHA doesnt really apply to him, hence case close

[1:36 pm, 30/09/2020] +: so if i interpret it correctly, it means that I can go around harassing people if I am deemed "mentally unstable"

[1:36 pm, 30/09/2020] +: and the law cant do much to me, not even sending me to imh for check up

Jimmy Chew

[1:37 pm, 30/09/2020] +: So sorry.

Rama

[1:37 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Food for thought

[1:37 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Check with ministry of community welfare scheme.

Berny

[1:37 pm, 30/09/2020] +: don't be, it's not your fault or our fault 😊

Jimmy Chew

[1:37 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I am sure there are objective measurements to ascertain someone is of unsound mind

Berny

[1:38 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I am pretty sure too, but, case was closed without any updates and he went Scott free

[1:38 pm, 30/09/2020] +: oh and the advice from the IO, the best one

[1:38 pm, 30/09/2020] +: call 999 if he harass you

[1:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: waste of resources imo

Jimmy Chew

[1:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: What will they do?

Berny

[1:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: they cant do much also anyway

[1:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: past 4-5 calls this year, he simply run away before police come

Alvin

[1:40 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Is that person really mentally unsound?

Berny

[1:40 pm, 30/09/2020] +: This one hor, I think they need to know where to seek the right assistance, I'm pretty sure most SSO would love to help

Alvin

[1:40 pm, 30/09/2020] +: If really mental case will get lock up bah

Berny

[1:41 pm, 30/09/2020] +: mentally unsound but under control with medication, he is a bright guy too, he knows the law and stuff and speak eloquently

[1:41 pm, 30/09/2020] +: If he is mentally sound, I would love to learn from him 🤭

[1:42 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

How did he entangled with you?

[1:42 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Some thing must have triggered it.

Berny

[1:44 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Some stuff are best left unknown, but somehow he got this impression that the Managing Agent of the estate is embezzling money, it also include the previous company before us and the one before the previous 🤭

[1:44 pm, 30/09/2020] +: We did challenge him to lodge a report under police for investigation, or go to BCA to complain if he wish to, but it didn't happened

Alvin

[1:45 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Electricity tariffs to rise 9% for households in next 3 months; gas prices to increase 5%

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/electricity-tariffs-to-rise-9-for-households-in-next-3-months-on-higher-energy-costs?xtor=CS3-18&utm_source=STiPhone&utm_medium=share&utm_term=2020-09-30%2013%3A09%3A56

[1:45 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Suddenly announce so many things price increase wor

Berny

[1:45 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 9% isn't that bad imo

[1:46 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Next time he come, don't get agitated.

Tell him calmly, I will call police on your behalf and solve this problem once and for all.

Sound sincere that you want to help him.

Berny

[1:47 pm, 30/09/2020] +: oh, I've tried all sorts of approach, calling 999 when he comes to harass me is the best way out

[1:47 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I've tried both hard and soft approach

[1:47 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Did you change your plan to open electricity, the price constant, no increase.

Alvin

[1:47 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yup

[1:47 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Geneco fixed price

Berny

[1:47 pm, 30/09/2020] +: some plan not constant, got 1 is discount of tariff, that will increase also

[1:48 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

So we have options.

Alvin

[1:48 pm, 30/09/2020] +: But there may be others who are on the plan with trarrifs

Berny

[1:48 pm, 30/09/2020] +: since we're on this topic, ask you guys, which plan should I go for ah?

[1:48 pm, 30/09/2020] +: DOT or fixed?

Blue and White Flag Guy

[1:48 pm, 30/09/2020] +: It's funny how OEM kicked in before COVID-19 and now thanks to it, some people aren't subject to the price hikes

[1:48 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Then they should switch, this is an open market.

Berny

[1:49 pm, 30/09/2020] +: first time house owner here 😬

[1:49 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Keppel not bad.

Berny

[1:49 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I've only dealt with Pacific Light before, for my work

[1:49 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

But not sure the fixed plan still available or not.

[1:50 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Do this consistently and treat it as a normal chore.

One day he will get tired and stop.

Blue and White Flag Guy

[1:51 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Since pricing plans change all the time, your best bet is to go to the OEM website and compare the different providers' offerings

Berny

[1:51 pm, 30/09/2020] +: that's what I thought, but boy... I was so wrong, it's been 2 years

[1:51 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

If not consult a qualified psychologist how to tackle such person with such behaviour.

Correct respond will terminate his behaviour.

[1:52 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Else get MP to help you to tap the right agency for help.

There must be a proper recourse.

Berny

[1:53 pm, 30/09/2020] +: MP also know about this guy, MP is lawyer 🤭

[1:53 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Then what is his suggestion?

Berny

[1:53 pm, 30/09/2020] +: lately I'm trying the "invisible man" treatment on him, it seems to work pretty well

[1:54 pm, 30/09/2020] +: MP is doing some secret action behind the scene, it is going pretty smoothly

Alvin

[1:54 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Look at Nat’s reply

[1:54 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Got to OEM to take a look

[1:54 pm, 30/09/2020] +: *Go

Berny

[1:55 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I saw, still comparing but I don't know how individual OEM company operate

[1:55 pm, 30/09/2020] +: similar to virtual telco

[1:55 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Ok. Then wait for the outcome.

Alvin

[1:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: My advise is to research for power generating companies

[1:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: The big 5

[1:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Can’t remember how many of them

[1:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: But 4 to 5 big players

Jimmy Chew

[1:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Just confirming. OEM means power generation companies

Alvin

[1:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Shortlist call and compare

[1:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Open Electricity Market

Berny

[1:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: - TPG got good rates, but connection is horrible in the west.

- GOMO (Singtel), superb connection, but lots of issues like cant receive sms otp from bank, CSO was horrid too

- GIGA (Starhub), currently using, RHB cant get SMS otp but the rest are ok, network pretty slow sometimes

Alvin

[1:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: OEM

Berny

[1:57 pm, 30/09/2020] +: but electricity, I don't dare to go for trial and error like telco, 1 wrong move and my electrical appliance could be fried

[1:58 pm, 30/09/2020] +: fried as in power surge during power trip etc, not overloaded fried

Jimmy Chew

[1:58 pm, 30/09/2020] +: This is like increase medisave fees( electricity oem). We sign up for 2 year at fixed rate then the increase comes after that. Yuu have no choice but gotta pay for medisave🤣

[1:58 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Such things won't happen. It is transparent.

The underlying power grid is still SP power.

Jimmy Chew

[1:58 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Why can't medisave discover new creative solutions rather than always raise prices

Berny

[1:58 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Really ah, then I go with the cheapest one liao

[1:58 pm, 30/09/2020] +: kam xia

[1:59 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

[2:18 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Without fiber, people will still get access to TV and internet - but highly unreliable.

1. Buy TV with external antenna - but transmission always disrupted.

2. Use handphone with 4G use as access point to internet. Then all the people inside the house use this 4g phone to access internet by turning the WiFi on.

Jimmy Chew

[2:18 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Seems residents commenting their MP (Indranee Rajah) not reading their e-mails to her.  Saw it on the nestia app

[2:18 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

So if Singtel or starthub go down, can use this interim workaround to access TV and internet.

Berny

[2:18 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 🤭 Let's not talk about MP la, although I know I started it. It may get political

Rama

[2:18 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Home wired up with fiber long ago.

[2:19 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Oops!

[2:19 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

That's why by default, fibre is a necessity, not an option.

Rama

[2:20 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Agree

Berny

[2:21 pm, 30/09/2020] +: let's talk about another sensitive topic: Religion and Racism

Rama

[2:21 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yes

[2:22 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Another issue regarding hijab. Muslim cooking class organisers says muslim women cannot wear hijab to class!?

[2:22 pm, 30/09/2020] +: On sgnews app.

Berny

[2:24 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I would assume that the organiser is a private one?

[2:26 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Religion and racism is the "💓 Heart".

This is the fundamental and the lowest denomination.

If everything is base on this denomination, then everything is Universal.

Berny

[2:27 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I think that Race and Religion education was somehow being left out from school

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:27 pm, 30/09/2020] +: It's not exactly left out, it's more about a form of cultural exchange between the students

Berny

[2:27 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Although I understand that schools cant teach everything, but I sure hope this 2 topic can be added in as a subject, together with graciousness and courtesy in the future

[2:28 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

The 💓 Heart - love for mankind - in this life and the after life.

Berny

[2:28 pm, 30/09/2020] +: not everyone thinks so

[2:28 pm, 30/09/2020] +: look at the comments from the recent sembawang temple fire, everyone bashing the temple and some bashing the religion, because of lives lost

[2:28 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Which religion is not based on this denomination?

Berny

[2:29 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Religion can preach that, but does the followers/devotees practise that?

[2:30 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I don't know much about other religions (I was an aethist for around 30 years), but generally, most religions will tell their devotees not to indulge in common sins like killing, having ill intents/thoughts

[2:30 pm, 30/09/2020] +: but that's not what we see on the street

[2:30 pm, 30/09/2020] +: again, I'm not trying to stir the feelings/emotions ya

[2:31 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

It's the followers/devotees' fault.

Not the religions' fault.

The religions being distorted to serve ones' self interest not the mankind interest.

[2:32 pm, 30/09/2020] +: You mean election 🤣

Jimmy Chew

[2:33 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yes

Berny

[2:33 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Correct, so thats where the education have to come inp

[2:33 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Oops

[2:35 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Correct the heart ❤️, everything will fall in its place.

No need complicated text.

Berny

[2:36 pm, 30/09/2020] +: So how to correct the heart? Last time got 好公民 and courtesy lion, now no more i think

[2:38 pm, 30/09/2020] +: This one is pretty normal I guess, not everyone is sensitive towards other races (i wont be surprised if some organiser or HR ask about a Singh's turban)

[2:38 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

仁者无敌。

万法由心💕修。

Berny

[2:38 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Buddhism

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I think this topic isn't appropriate anymore, it's become a tool to propagate religion

Berny

[2:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I guess so... can continue with race?

[2:39 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Compassion is supreme.

Correcting ones behaviour start from the heart.

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Seems fine to me! :)

Berny

[2:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: The hijab and turban issue

[2:40 pm, 30/09/2020] +: And racial tolerant

[2:40 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Compassion is universal.

It applies to all religions or no religions.

Berny

[2:41 pm, 30/09/2020] +: How can we have a more inclusive society?

[2:41 pm, 30/09/2020] +: More racial tolerant society?

[2:41 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: Compassion with heart.

[2:42 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: Anchor on wisdom.

Berny

[2:42 pm, 30/09/2020] +: It will somehow interlink with foreigner related issue btw

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:42 pm, 30/09/2020] +: People have to understand one another's culture

Berny

[2:42 pm, 30/09/2020] +: How to force it into peoples brain?

Rama

[2:43 pm, 30/09/2020] +: One potential employer did!

[2:43 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Not mindless compassion with out wisdom and bankrupt the State.

This medisave scheme is one such example.

Berny

[2:43 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Im not surprised 🤭

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:43 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Force never works, it will only backfire

Rama

[2:43 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yes

Jimmy Chew

[2:44 pm, 30/09/2020] +: How did they do it?

[2:44 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 👍

Berny

[2:44 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 🤭 ok, how to educate them

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:45 pm, 30/09/2020] +: More local cultural exchange to learn more about one another's culture through presentations and questions

Berny

[2:46 pm, 30/09/2020] +: But do we have buffers for that? Most parents only focus on academic results

[2:46 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

As long as all policies, scheme and programme are based on 3 value system, then the programme will succeed:-

1. Compassion

2. Wisdom

3. Selfless service

Berny

[2:46 pm, 30/09/2020] +: For this, I think some primary schools are practicing "cross racial dressing" during their major festivals

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:46 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I don't get what you mean by buffers. People of course focus a lot on academic results but so what if you're a "genius" but you just suck at interpersonal relationships due to that lack of sensitivity?

Rama

[2:47 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Mentioned during interview so potential employee carried incident onto social media

[2:47 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Eg. The medishield scheme is based on these 3 attributes.

Berny

[2:48 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Buffer as in does the schools have space to slot in the extra education on racial harmony? Or will the parents support and help in educating their children those?

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:48 pm, 30/09/2020] +: You don't need more space for that, children are curious about things, leverage on that curiosity to get started

Boon

[2:49 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Dear REACH, thank you for sharing this important development. With a longer average lifespan, this is an important initiative. Thank you.  Overall, the higher coverage is important for all of us, since patients and their families should not be burden by financial costs after medical recovery. Sustaining the ability to pay the premium to avoid financial burden is therefore an important factor too.

Your question on how it would benefit us is a great rally to take a look at what are the new benefits vis-a-vis the full cost of premium when the subsidy runs out.   For example, does the additional benefits cover more expenses INCLUDING medical equipments that are associated with recovery from top illnesses in SG?  Does it cover more medical conditions?  What is an estimated new premium per person per month - is the SGD360 million in govt subsidy (next 2 years) of the additional premium indicative of what the citizens will need to bear by ourselves after the subsidy has ran out?    On a longer term, are there decisive plans to rein in medical cost inflation in Singapore - so that any future increase in premiums can be managed now - for the system can continue to deliver responsive medical care especially for those who cannot afford private care?

Berny

[2:51 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I dont have kids yet so I cant comment on it, but the right guidance for the curiosity is important, back then I think the emphasis was courtesy, mother tongue and sex education during the 90s

[2:52 pm, 30/09/2020] +: While I'm not the brightest children in the cohort, i learnt those well, but went astray along the way and dropped out of school 🤭

[2:52 pm, 30/09/2020] +: And fyi, I was pretty racist back then, but not the extreme type

Jimmy Chew

[2:53 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Sex education in 2020 is where and atcwhat education level being taught!?

Berny

[2:54 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I learn it during sec 3, 2005

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:54 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I think we are all innately racist in some way due to our upbringing

Berny

[2:55 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Correct, it was passed down from the family. HDB is doing a good job by having the racial quota to allow children of different races to mix

[2:55 pm, 30/09/2020] +: But how can the schools reinforce that ideology further, before the family ideology corrupts the whole thinking?

[2:56 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Racism is anchor on sight and perceived differences.

It is not anchor on the foundation of the heart ❤️ where all humans are the same and equal

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: ...

Rama

[2:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yes

[2:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Agree

Berny

[2:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I think I know why theres this comment 🤭

[2:56 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Back to local cultural exchange etc right?

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:57 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Now you know why we call him Zen beng

Berny

[2:57 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Good to make peace with own self ma

[2:57 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Calms the mind 🤭

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:57 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Misplaced priorities tbh

Berny

[2:57 pm, 30/09/2020] +: But this is important

[2:58 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Calming the mind is Universal.

It applies to all religions and no religions.

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:58 pm, 30/09/2020] +: It is, but someone is propagating too much of something as you can tell by now

Berny

[2:58 pm, 30/09/2020] +: We need people with different priorities and life stage for a more complete ground sentiments

[2:59 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Unless people don't believe in calming their minds.

Berny

[3:00 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Its how your put the message across, forcing it down somebody throat isnt a good way to change somebody mind

Blue and White Flag Guy

[3:00 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Exactly what I said about how force only backfires lol, how apt

Berny

[3:01 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Ooh, I just walk past a SQ transport ambassador i think

[3:01 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Not forcing people by pushing the message but by reasoning that calming of minds is good at solving problems.

Unless people think otherwise.

Berny

[3:01 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Im pretty proud of the SQ standard 🤭

Blue and White Flag Guy

[3:02 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Honestly I think nothing of them lol

Suma Pamu

[3:02 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Will Singapore Able to afford Canadian Health care Model instead?!

Why not Increase Tax also..(along with More Insurance coverage) And Make the Healthcare Free... Isn't it better?!

If one is suffering From rare Desease at 40s Asking him to keep money For his old age.. does it make sense to him?! Does any one Can guarantee that He can live Upto 60s to use that money he earned before?!

Singapore has many Rich people Also Middle class, by increasing Taxes Govt can get revenue and Can use directly for health care...

Recently during a Hospital visit one guy is Arguing with some One about same thing..

He has Medisave but Can only use limited money For Tests each year... And he can not afford to pay For all tests himself.. he feels it's unfair..

Even I do feel Unfair..

When ever it comes to health The present situation and Getting treatment for present Condition is THE PRIORITY... Whether How long one can live or not

No one knows..

"It's like Because You need to eat Tomorrow .starve yourself Today""

This is Not correct.. ofcourse we need to watch out for Tomorrow but Deffinatly not By Starving today ""

If You ask me Whole health care System need to revamped. J

Berny

[3:05 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I agree with what you say... but on the "recent" incident which was the example, I hope you can agree with me.

A limit is there for a reason, similar to how some wish to fully withdraw their CPF/retire sum at 1 go.  It sounds really nice on paper to have an unlimited cap on the amount you can use each time, but what happens when accident happen and you ran out of medisave?

[3:06 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Same logic applies to full cpf withdrawal upon hitting xx age, withdraw everything today and if you lose everything tomorrow, whats next?

Suma Pamu

[3:07 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Like I mentioned

For HEALTH CARE

Present is important.... because need to be alive till tomorrow... To get Accident ... If I am dying today..

Can not compare with other Things Like

Using CPF for Housing etc..

Berny

[3:09 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Agree on the alive part. But there are many assistance out there if you are unable to pay for the excess sum aftsr subsidy and medisave.  Besides, I doubt any hospital will deny anyone treatment if anyone have any outstanding debt

[3:07 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: Will interest rate go negative? Means we have to pay bank for our deposits

[3:07 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: No will not.

Negative interest is an unorthodox monetary policy shun by many economists.

It is used by Japan and then EU.

It will cause permanent damage to the economy.

[3:07 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: 1. Negative interest will deter people from putting money in the bank and instead invest in risky toxic assets - economy may collapse due to artificial bubble and bad investment.

2. Banks cannot survive as people don't want to put saving in banks.

3. Banks cannot loan to business, economy collapse.

[3:07 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: Banks is a important multiplier of business and economy.

If banks fail, the whole economy fail.

Fed and Singapore as well as many economists has ruled out negative interest rate.

[3:07 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: It will also cause harm to Singapore as a financial hub.

Imagine which investors will put their money into Singapore if our banks don't pay interest?

Investors will pull their money out resulting in big money outflow from our financial hub.

Berny

[3:07 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Crisis is the best time to step into investment world, slowly and carefully

[3:09 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Well I am risk aversive.

I don't speculate in foreign currencies.

Berny

[3:11 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Currency will drop (similar to banana notes), but they will bounce back some day (banana notes in mint condition are worth some money now)

[3:11 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I think 50 cents bad condition note is worth $3 last year

[3:12 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

MAS will have to do it because of trade and as financial hub.

But MAS have to do it carefully, because US currency don't know can hold for how long as China is going on different track with yuan digital currency.

Many countries are also doing bilateral currency swap - and not trusting US currency.

[3:13 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Temasek is issuing a 10, 30 and 50 years US currency bond.

I think we know how to hedge it well.

But just be mindful that US currency cannot hold it like precious instruments.

[3:14 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Else our financial reserves will be depleted.

Suma Pamu

[3:16 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Also As we are talking about Healthcare..

I want to give 2more cents😉

I sincerely feel Sg public hospitals Are short-handed...

Not only Allied health professionals..

I am saying Doctors and Surgeons

Are Relatively Less than required...

I faced myself Issue number of Times .. to get a Specialist appointment need to wait Atleast few months ?! Why Such A long wait?! I can understand 1 or 2 weeks waiting

(That much wait is ok.. but Asking them to wait 3 or 4 months..?!... How does the Patient Feel?! For doctor It may not be Emergency situation but For patient It will be A horrible time to wait)..

If Sg can afford other infrastructure Deffinatly can afford more Doctors and Surgeons..

Also A recent case (a p6girl I know Got Pancreatic cancer)..

And Fortunately the Surgery went well.. but The Surgeon themselves told The patient parents that they have Never done Such kind of surgery before!!

Can you imagine The parents agony?! World number one city in everything ..but When it comes to health care.. Sg need to be improved A LOT ..

These are my 2cents when comes to health care

[3:17 pm, 30/09/2020] +: We need to overcome the social stigma of having male nurse and to arouse the interest of students to sign up and be a nurse while not lowering the entry requirement barrier, not easy

Rama

[3:20 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Government is working on mid career switch for essential Services.

----

Ben

[3:27 pm, 30/09/2020] +: It doesn't always bounce back, that's a myth. Many currencies have declined never to go back to the high points.

[4:02 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Precisely speculation in foreign currencies is a high risk.

MAS, a central bank will how to peg it and hedge it appropriately for trade and currency swap.

Thus layman is not in the best position to indulge in it - else can be badly burnt.

Currency exchange is usually based on economic situation, monetary policy and speculative elements - a very sophisticated structure behind it and usually beyond the knowledge of most people.

Stella

[3:30 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Short handed partly bcos our system relies too much on nurse aid to the patients. In Taiwan, patients are expected to be warded with a family member. Otherwise family member need to hire someone to sleep in throughout the patient's stay in ward. Feeding of medicine, going to toilet, getting water and such is done by family. Nurse only issue medicine, do injections and other professional stuff.

Rama

[3:34 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Can consider this here!?

Stella

[3:34 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yes I wish

[3:36 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Many Hong Kong people move to Taiwan because of the health care costs.

Valli

[3:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: + 1

anfan

[3:40 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Then there must be many family members  in the hospital. Those who do not have family members have to hire someone. Family members need to take leave

[3:41 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Should family members stay ovenight at hospital to take care?

Rama

[3:42 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Point noted

anfan

[3:43 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Family members also may also have kids to take care

Suma Pami

[3:51 pm, 30/09/2020] +: As I mentioned it is not only about Nurses

It's about Doctors and Surgeons

Stella

[4:00 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Of course. The family or care giver needs to attend to the non medical needs of the patient.

[4:01 pm, 30/09/2020] +: There is always a choice. Family care is free, paid by love.  Otherwise hire care giver, paid by money.

Suma Pamu

[4:02 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Also about Medisave and Subsidies many patients Not fully aware of how it works ..

And Most Of elderly (or soon to be) are alone with out any immediate family members..

Having One illness is One thing and Running to Here and there for Money issues will be so tough..

Making it Free For any illness is the Only best way which actually can fulfill the needs...

(Again I will say If can Afford the best Infrastructure in Other areas health care also can be done..)

Just that I feel This was not given The Number 1 priority yet..

Atleast with The Great pandemic we are Facing.. health care should Come First and Foremost issue To fix.

[4:04 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yes

[5:02 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Singapore is a small country and we do not have the population to spread the cost, the increase will likely be a huge one

[5:05 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Make health care free - is economic suicide.

No countries in the world can afford free health care.

Not even the richest countries in the world.

CQ

[5:07 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I agree. Free healthcare is funded by taxes. You're paying the bill for your parents' and grandparents' generation. But hey you young people, you're not having kids. So who's gonna pay your bill when it's your turn?

Berny

[5:08 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Another perspective to look at it is the pwm or minimum wage model.  Raising pay for lower income sounds great right? We have to know that the cost is pushed to the end consumer and it will increase the overall living cost

Ana

[5:08 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Isn't that why we're all working longer hours and for longer years? 😂

CQ

[5:09 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Yeah and it doesn't go towards your own bank. It goes towards current spending.

Ana

[5:09 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I'm confused. What is this assumption based upon?

Berny

[5:10 pm, 30/09/2020] +: More income equals more spending power

[5:10 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Then again, working longer hours doesnt really contribute to future generation, unless you are paid hourly

[5:11 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Eg. Ot pay or part time, then you incur more income tax

Suma Pamu

[5:15 pm, 30/09/2020] +: So you mean Canada is Not having Free Healthcare?!

As far as I know It is free for Most Health issues except for Aesthetic  Dental and Paying for Drugs..

And I don't think Canada is dying

And Anyway

It is my perception

If any one asking me U want World class transport or Healthcare .. I choose Healthcare .

Transport is manageable especially in a small island Country..

[5:16 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

How much taxes are the working people paying?

Blue and White Flag Guy

[5:16 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Transport manageable in small island country? You sure anot, you sure you not unwittingly taking our PT for granted already?

CQ

[5:18 pm, 30/09/2020] +: if you look around the world where it's based on free healthcare and welfare states, the states are always reliant on the current workforce to generate enough revenue to support the welfare schemes of those who need it. but it's fast becoming unsustainable, but it's very difficult to take back what you've already given.

in singapore, you have a CPF scheme and what you earn literally goes into your "bank". so in response to Danny's point that making healthcare entirely free would be economic suicide because someone still has to pick up the tab. and in relation to your point that that's why we're working longer hours and for longer years, it still wouldn't solve the problem because if not for Medisave, whatever taxes you're paying would have to go towards footing the welfare/free healthcare bills for the rest of the people who are drawing down on these resources.

which brings me back to my point. so what happens when you have a lower tax-paying population and you eventually have to retire or stop working, and you're going to be drawing down on those state resources for welfare and free healthcare? who's footing the bill? so yah, my ideas came across truncated but this is the gist of where i'm coming from.

[5:21 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Are you willing to pay $6604 in tax every year - so that you can have free health care?

Suma Pamu

[5:22 pm, 30/09/2020] +: There is No free lunch in the world that we all know

Yes I can pay 7k per year If I get Free Healthcare

Because I believe health is wealth

And if I hospitalise for some reason

We pay Minimum 2500 for 3 to 5 days..

And if ended getting MRI or Scans it will cost double

So it's ok 😉

[5:23 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

So don't cherry pick - and jump in to say people health care free - so we must offer free as well.

People pay high tax, how much tax we pay?

Suma Pamu

[5:23 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I mentioned clearly in my first message

[5:23 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Yes you are willing to pay high tax for health.

But majority of people are not willing.

Suma Pamu

[5:23 pm, 30/09/2020] +: I Suggested for Increasing Tax as well

..

[5:24 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

No. increase tax us driving talents and business away.

Suma Pamu

[5:24 pm, 30/09/2020] +: May be

But I guess they still will be paying for Increased medishield soon😀

[5:25 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Every country are reducing tax to attract investment - and you are suggesting increase tax that will drive away business and talent.

[5:28 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

If you are willing to pay $6604 as tax for free health care, I don't see a reason why should you complain by paying $600 medishield premium?

Suma Pamu

[5:29 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Did I complain?!

[5:29 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Please show me where did I complain paying that ..

[5:30 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

So your argument of high tax and free health care cannot stand water - but instead drive up our tax base --- and drive away investors, business and talents.

This will our economy.

[5:30 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

This will kill our economy.

CQ

[5:33 pm, 30/09/2020] +: DPM Heng to deliver ministerial statement on Oct 5 before debate on COVID-19 support measures

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/covid-19-support-heng-swee-keat-ministerial-statement-parliament-13163954

[5:34 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Oohhh.... More measures coming in?

DS

[5:34 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Maybe more support

[5:37 pm, 30/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

And free health care is a recipe of people abusing the health care service.

This explains why we pay $600 while Canadian have to pay 10 times more $6604 as tax.

Even slight itch, pain people will see doctors and abuse the free health care.

And then our healthcare costs will balloon exponentially and our tax will also increase correspondingly.

Free health care is an economic suicide.

Rama

[5:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Agree

Berny

[5:48 pm, 30/09/2020] +: My question got answered 🤭

[5:49 pm, 30/09/2020] +: But lets talk about tax increase, increase 3% which could be less than $1,000 for average Singaporean, already so many people cry father cry mother, if we increase it further up to 6k to match canada (assuming if we tap on reserves for the shortfall), how will the everyone else react?

Jamie

[5:50 pm, 30/09/2020] +: it would be good to include some help for households with people working from home, to cope with the increasing electricity tarriffs, which was just announced today 🙏🏼

Berny

[5:50 pm, 30/09/2020] +: This wont be give drumstick take back whole chicken anymore, it will be give 1 egg take back whole farm 😊

CQ

[5:50 pm, 30/09/2020] +: it might be a re-statement of what was announced in August though, cos Parliament wasn't sitting at that time

Berny

[5:51 pm, 30/09/2020] +: What about incentives for essential workers?

[5:51 pm, 30/09/2020] +: They will complain

[6:34 pm, 30/09/2020] +: 😷 unfortunately yes...

[6:37 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Also you wait months for an operation etc.  'Free at the point of treatment' is what they call it in the UK, but in reality the conditions are poor and you wait a long time. No MRI unless very serious case, for example. I'd not want to be ill in the UK without private health care, which means I pay twice!

[6:38 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Singapore Health Care is a good balance between places like UK ('Free' but not much treatment) and the US (Amazingly expensive but good treatment)

Rama

[6:38 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Agree

Ben

[6:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: France is fantastic, but you pay 45% income tax and 50%(?) inheritance tax on all your global assets

Rama

[6:39 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Wow

Ben

[6:40 pm, 30/09/2020] +: Basically, healthcare is very expensive for good treament. Singapore spends the money wisely on what matters, and subsidises citizen costs.

[6:40 pm, 30/09/2020] +: It

[6:40 pm, 30/09/2020] +: It's not free, but there is a check and balance

How can we encourage more Singaporeans to participate in the Emerging Stronger Conversations?

Open to citizens and permanent residents, the Emerging Stronger Conversations allow participants to share their hopes and plans for a more caring, cohesive, and resilient post-Covid-19 society.

They are part of the broader Singapore Together movement, where the Government and people partner each other to co-create policy solutions.

There have been 11 virtual sessions and SG Together ESC surveys on two apps, LifeSG and OneService, with more to come. More than 1,000 Singaporeans have participated to date. Held over Zoom, each ESC lasts around two hours and involves 40 to 50 people. Those interested can sign up online.

Blue and White Flag Guy

[11:33 am, 28/09/2020] +: More exposure. I doubt majority have even heard of it though I was part of the inaugural session and met a wonderful facilitator and also a wonderful group member too!

Berny

[11:36 am, 28/09/2020] +: I know my opinion may become slightly political, but imo, the best way is to tap on the different political parties to work together and talk to their supporters. Singaporeans are generally "thin skinned" and doesn't voice out as much and even if the different MPs were to walk the ground to ask for "opinions", they may not reach a 100% accurate sentiment:

- some might be complaining about other stuff instead of having a honest conversation on the topic

- some may hold onto their opinions due to political differences (eg. I support xxx party, therefore, I shall not give you my sentiment to help your party)

- some are simply... bo chup...

While the app survey is good to attract the less vocal sentiments, some people may not even know the app's existence at all (i.e. me, never hear of LifeSG before till today 😬)

A group meeting might be good, but the more vocal ones might drown the voice of the less vocal opinion

Blue and White Flag Guy

[11:38 am, 28/09/2020] +: Regarding the app, there's too many, even if 3 may sound little

SingPass, OneService, LifeSG

Why not all in one? Or make Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) that will be easily accessible from any browser on any device

Berny

[11:38 am, 28/09/2020] +: I went to google store and LifeSG got horrid rating for some weird reason 😬

Blue and White Flag Guy

[11:40 am, 28/09/2020] +: On a personal note, during the inaugural session, there were 1 facilitator, 1 senior citizen, 2 other members who were youths (1 slightly older than I am and 1 slightly younger than I am)

Undoubtedly the senior drowned out the opinions of all of us in a way and when she mentioned how engaging the elderly is difficult and I suggested that going with the format of hackathons, where people look for their dream team to join in on, she misinterpreted that and thought I wanted the elderly to participate in hackathons

Headache lah some people, never hear clearly want to stir 💩

Ken

[11:41 am, 28/09/2020] +: LifeSG was useless from the start... now a bit better... can use for baby registration and birth certificate etc

Berny

[11:43 am, 28/09/2020] +: I'll be honest with you ya, the app is really... have lots of room for improvements, but I do appreciate the effort put in, even though I don't know what's the rationale of designing the app in the first place..

Kn

[11:45 am, 28/09/2020] +: Different teams hopefully... so have wider ideas to make the apps better...

one service app was quite good

Berny

[11:47 am, 28/09/2020] +: Actually, why not integrate all the different apps together? Singpass is good, OneService allows you to complain without writing in or calling, Trace together is... trace together 😬, if all 3 were to combine together, it will be less confusing

Blue and White Flag Guy

[11:47 am, 28/09/2020] +: Also on the issue on communucation between the elderly and those of a younger age,

There was a time when I was on the MRT and there were 2 elderly women muttering between themselves saying how all teenagers refuse to give up their seat

But they didn't think, I was the only one who was ready to do so but how can you seat 2 people in 1 seat? They didn't think about this so I approached them and reprimanded them before asking which one of them needed the seat more

Too many breakdowns in communication when it comes to this two age groups, sadly. I personally have the heart for everyone because I represent public transport and we all know the big hoo-hah about reserved seats, though I wasn't seated in one. It was a middle seat.

But if this goes on for long enough, even I, with such a big heart will have his heart turn hard and then everyone will really start to wonder who will ever give up their seats to them

Berny

[11:50 am, 28/09/2020] +: This... boils down to a few things:

1. Graciousness (If you really need a sit for whatever reason (maybe you suddenly felt giddy), just ask anyone politely, chances are, they will give up or the seats nearby will be empty).

2. Self entitlement - Old =/= need/want seat, some seniors doesn't like to sit for some weird reason, but only some.

3. some people may not give up their seat because they had a long day, maybe they are feeling unwell, maybe this maybe that.

4. Generation gap

Blue and White Flag Guy

[11:51 am, 28/09/2020] +: I'm addressing the 4th point here, the other 3 are kind of obvious

[11:52 am, 28/09/2020] +: There's also this huge stigma surrounding the reserved seats. Even if you're not on one, you can still give it up to whoever that might need it more than you. Again, it does not necessarily have to be just the reserved seats.

[12:07 pm, 28/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

[4:08 pm, 28/09/2020] +: invite a wide spectrum of people and allow them to express, don't handpicked the audience

Berny

[4:25 pm, 28/09/2020] +: Perhaps, but we could use the same principle to address the issue.  Separate the groups into different profile instead of having everyone in the same table, which could drown the voices of the minority

Jimmy Chew

[4:45 pm, 28/09/2020] +: yeah, they should open to the public

[4:55 pm, 28/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Maybe pay token sum for people to participate in focus group open up to public. ( Eg. NTUC voucher, Capital mall voucher or maple tree voucher).

Then more public maybe entice to join.

Ben

[5:31 pm, 28/09/2020] +: It's hard getting people to participate for anything regarding feedback. Some simple ideas: Keep it easy - do an online form, add a module to the One Service app, simple click boxes and scale of 1 to 10 questions. Make it relevant - who are you targeting, what is the problem you are trying to solve, how will this survey help, when will the results be made public (or some kind of feedback provided)

[5:32 pm, 28/09/2020] +: Advertise that this survey is happening on PT and bus stops, by schools - anywhere people are waiting around.

[5:33 pm, 28/09/2020] +: Have a QR code to scan, make the survey able to 'save and continue later' if it's long, offer a prize draw for a number of respondents etc

[5:34 pm, 28/09/2020] +: Keep focus groups short (max 1 hour) and offer a snack or drink and publish the agenda and structure for the event so people know what to expect.

Multi modal way of globalisation is the future.

Singapore securing regional cooperation very important for our survival.

This is an important topic for emerging stronger.

Hopefully, RCEP and CPTPP can proceed smoothly.

Boon

[6:19 pm, 28/09/2020] +: 1. Let Singaporean know why it is important for them to participate, so that those who are silent can step up. Why is speaking up important for Singaporeans - will their voices be heard and acknowledged?

2. We should have dialogues - by and with Singaporeans (not preselected based on rank or status) - on the national issues that Singaporeans need to focus on now and the foreseeable future, so that we can be on a common page and direction.

[6:37 pm, 28/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Actually what is the top 5 issues that majority of Singaporeans are concern with?

If anyone can identify the top 5 most concern issues - then more people will participate and provide their inputs.

Boon

[6:38 pm, 28/09/2020] +: 👍 Exactly. What are the common top 5 issues?

[6:43 pm, 28/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Having identify the 5 top common most concern issues - identify whether has the current government policies address them convincingly.
If not raise them as topics for discussion - eg. in REACH whatsapp discussion, focus group etc.
After the top 5 common concern are addressed, raise the next top 5 common concern.
By doing so, we will have systematically and surgically address the most common concerned isssues that bother Singaporeans.
With more people participating in the dicussion of their most concern issues - many people will have understood the consensus taken by the people and Government in addressing them ---- and there will be less grievances, unhappiness or misunderstanding.

[6:45 pm, 28/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Come the next term of office.

[6:51 pm, 28/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
How to pick the top 5 most common concerns that bothers them?
Ask everyone to list out his/her list and then map them out.
Digital analytics can be put to good used to list the 5 common topics that concern most people in Singapore.
And then get people in REACH or other discussion forum to provide solutions to it - and collate them.
Implement the much discussed and workable solutions.
Since the solutions are joint decision among the public and government - buy-in from the public already secured.

REACH 143 - Measured immigration to ensure a cohesive society (SK)

[11:30 am, 25/09/2020] +: 📢 Today's Topic 📢

How can we balance a measured pace of immigration with ensuring Singapore remains a cohesive society?

According to the Government’s annual Population in Brief report released on Thursday (Sep 24), the Singapore’s population declined by 0.3 per cent in the past year to 5.69 million as of June 2020, with a fall in the number of foreigners.

This was mainly due to a reduction in foreign employment in the services sector. In terms of types of passes, the largest drop was for work permit holders. These trends were mainly due to Covid-19 related challenges, brought about by weak demand and travel restrictions, said the report.

The number of citizens grew by 0.6 per cent to reach 3.52 million in June, while the permanent resident (PR) population remained stable at 0.52 million.

[11:32 am, 25/09/2020] +: The point to have then study our school and reduce the number of international school. So they can integrate with us more. Kids is the bridge for most parents to talk to each other.

Having close off groups will further isolate and form their own community.

[11:32 am, 25/09/2020] +: Example department should have majority Singapore... rather than all in that department having similar race or citizenship only.

[11:33 am, 25/09/2020] +: So to force interactions and takes years to forge bonds

Alvin

[11:34 am, 25/09/2020] +: For EP holders strictly no DP allowed or LTVP. For PRs and SC yes. This will ensure that EP holders are here strictly for work and if they want to set up roots here with family they will have to be PR or SC.

Berny

[11:34 am, 25/09/2020] +: I dont know when it started, but somehow I feel that Singaporeans are getting xenophobic

Alvin

[11:34 am, 25/09/2020] +: We should continue to issue EP for work.

Ken

[11:35 am, 25/09/2020] +: Yes cause when interest is affected.

Jobs goes to people willing to do the same job with much lower pay

[11:35 am, 25/09/2020] +: Which cause they have families not here

[11:35 am, 25/09/2020] +: They spend lesser

Alvin

[11:36 am, 25/09/2020] +: I think sg ppl are pragmatic lot

[11:36 am, 25/09/2020] +: We know we still need EP, SPass and WP workers

[11:37 am, 25/09/2020] +: I think it’s how these workers behave here that will impact our perceptions

Berny

[11:37 am, 25/09/2020] +: I agree, although there may be some discriminated hiring practices in some company (hiring their own people, be it local or foreigners), generally, from a company point of view, if both candidate can perform the same task in the same time, would you hire the "more expensive" local or the "cheaper" foreigner

Alvin

[11:37 am, 25/09/2020] +: Eg SDA only catch locals and not ang mohs etc

Berny

[11:38 am, 25/09/2020] +: this sentence dangerous leh... ang moh also got tio caught

[11:38 am, 25/09/2020] +: Before that

[11:38 am, 25/09/2020] +: Hence eg

[11:38 am, 25/09/2020] +: So as long as authorities make amends all is good

Berny

[11:39 am, 25/09/2020] +: before that maybe have la, just that nobody reported

[11:39 am, 25/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

We adopt hard quotas and proportionate balancing of citizens with racial balance and PR as well as non resident foreigners.

So population numbers are always manageable.

Alvin

[11:40 am, 25/09/2020] +: No SDA was sighted in Robertson Quay

[11:40 am, 25/09/2020] +: Even when patrons are flouting rules

Ken

[11:40 am, 25/09/2020] +: But it is just business

Rama

[11:41 am, 25/09/2020] +: Yeah

Berny

[11:41 am, 25/09/2020] +: oh LTVP holders dont need to apply for EP or S-pass

[11:41 am, 25/09/2020] +: my wife is a LTVP holder, her headcount is considered "unique"

[11:41 am, 25/09/2020] +: not under foreigner headcount (no levy) or local (no cpf)

Alvin

[11:42 am, 25/09/2020] +: I’m saying foreigner with work passes CANNOT apply LTVP

[11:43 am, 25/09/2020] +: Ppl not happy when ahem

[11:43 am, 25/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Topics :- Jobs should be created base on economic values - not creating jobs for the sake of employment (with little or no economic values)

1. There are demand to create jobs for elderly and vulnerable groups - which is socially responsible and will help the elderly and vulnerable to stand on their own feet to help themselves to fund their daily living.

2. But jobs created for these group of people must be based on economic market principles - and not create jobs for the sake of employment but of little or no economic benefits.

- Eg. Asking town councils to set aside more jobs for elderly or vulnerables when the work in town councils don't require so many workers --- will be as good as throwing good money away with little economic values.

- Eg. A town council will normally award a tender to a contractor to maintain cleanliness in the housing estate - and assume with the right equipment and tools will only need 10 workers (with salary of $1,500 per month).

- Then it don't make sense to create 1000 jobs for elderly or vulnerables in town council to clean the housing estate. And pay $1,500 per month to 1000 workers.

- Jobs created in this case are not based on economic values and outcomes --- but are just creating jobs for the sake of employment but are not basedd on economic or market needs.

- Residents pay say $70 a month as town council fees to maintain the housing estates - when a contractor of 10 workers @ $1,500 per month each.

- But if town council are forced to create jobs for elderly or vulnerables for 1000 workers -- how much residents need to pay for town council fees? $500 per month for town council fees?

- This is not fair to the residents or to the Government who is a custodian of taxpayer money --- to use money prudently and get the best deal at a cost effective price --- just for the sake of creating jobs not based on economic market principles.

3. Right jobs must be created by the Government, Economy and the Business based on economic market principles -- and then train elderly and vulnerables and put them in the jobs.

4. Jobs that are registered with WSG, e2i, NTUC, social enterpreneurs and other job placement - are jobs created based on economic market principles.

eg. cleaner jobs for mall,

security guards for mall, offices, condo estates etc.

Come across a bank that created "back room" jobs to archive document - for disabled, elderly and vulnerables.

Utensils collection and cleaning at food courts.

Gardening and landscaping jobs in public and private sectors.

F&B that employ elderly, vulnerables, disabled etc.

5. Note:- Singapore is a small nation with no natural resources --- we only have humans who are trained to do value-added jobs and money reserves to help to create wealth for us and tide us over during crisis (like the current covid pandemic) --- we cannot spend and lavish our money reserves mindlessly and carelessly ---- and our future generations will have nothing left - and will live in despair.

6. Very well endowed countries with so many natural resources like oil, rubber, palm oil, durian etc --- also will come a time that their natural resources will be depleted and the whole nation finance come under pressure - if generations of people squander the wealth away with lavish and careless spendings.

7. Singapore all the more must be prudent and invest our money reserves wisely - and not squander it away with careless, mindless or lavish spendings - as if money are falling from the sky.

Alvin

[11:43 am, 25/09/2020] +: Certain groups bring in their entire “village” with these passes

Rama

[11:43 am, 25/09/2020] +: Yes

Berny

[11:44 am, 25/09/2020] +: rephrase:

I thought only a SC or PR can be sponsor of their immediate family member?

[11:45 am, 25/09/2020] +: and then for work pass to apply for ltvp, they need ica and mom approval iirc

Review on women's issues goes beyond the law, aims to 'deeply ingrain' gender equality in society: Shanmugam

By Chew Hui Min

By Lin Suling

Executive Editor, CNA Commentary

24 Sep 2020 09:00AM (Updated: 24 Sep 2020 09:53AM)

Speaking of his own experience in the legal industry, he said that women were well-represented there, but this was not necessarily the case in other sectors.

The proportion of women on the boards of the top 100 primary-listed companies in Singapore was only 16.2 per cent as of last year.

“I was a lawyer in private practice and in my firm, which was then the largest law firm in Singapore, more than half the partners were women. Three out of the five members of the top policymaking body were women,” he said.

“So, you know you're surrounded by all these highly articulate, talented, very bright women, and you don't go away thinking that women are somehow oppressed.”

But there are some structural issues in Singapore which are “products of (the) socio-cultural system” and have not been dealt with yet, he said. For example, women take up more care-giving responsibilities, and many have to choose between family and career.

These issues cannot be dealt with by the Government alone, he said, noting how in Scandinavian countries, fathers are expected to take time off work to help look after their children.

"It tells you the role that men play is very important in trying to have a changed perspective, and that can't be done by the Government alone ... I think these are all things that need to be looked at."

When asked how far he would go to ensure better representation of women on company boards, as corporate leaders and in Parliament, he said that he does not see quotas as a viable solution.

"Generally, our approach has been to eschew quotas, because quotas are a short route to tokenism, and the women who make it on their own merit, and there are large numbers of them, could also be tarred with the same brush ... there is also that risk,” he said.

When asked for his response to the argument that true equality requires women to do National Service, he laughed and said: “I will ask those people to go and try being a woman. And to get through the lived reality, and … look at the challenges that women go through.”

[12:13 pm, 21/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Wonder why suddenly the topic of gender equality pop out.

Thought we have treated man and woman equally in our society.

[12:16 pm, 21/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Well in parliament, there are many Ministers who are women, there are fair amount of women who are MPs.

[12:17 pm, 21/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

In the workforce, there are fair amount of women in the executive positions.

[12:27 pm, 21/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

I am sure if there is a right fit, women will not be pass over.

We have to be mindful that women upon marriage are bearing babies and there will be period when motherhood become predominant.

[12:34 pm, 21/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Depending on individual, if a person display competence, talk sense, display knowledge - who in the right mind will say the women are gullible or ignorant?

This also applies to men.

[12:37 pm, 21/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Don't know.

I don't have the official stats.

Also it doesn't depends on hard figures.

It depends on whether more women want to join politics compare to men.

[12:44 pm, 21/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Construction will see more men because they are stronger and can carry heavy stuff.  (Like in NS, woman build and physique is not as strong as men - Minister Shanmugam imply the same. Try to being a woman and understand their challenge)

Nursing, women are more attentive and meticulous and it suit women better.

I don't think this is gender inequality.

It is more like which gender is a better fit.

I don't think we deliberately create such job inequality.

[1:00 pm, 21/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

If man is stronger than women which is a scientific fact* - and you say this statement is discriminatory.

Then define in science why man is not stronger than women in bone mass and strength?

[12:50 pm, 21/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

I doubt there's any law to discriminate against men or women from entering any professions.

That's why I didn't see any gender discrimination or inequality per se in Singapore.

========

[11:45 am, 25/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: An example of REACH discussion filter into consideration for National Policies.

Whether it is short text or long messages, as long as ideas are good, they can shape government policies.

Thus ideas can be long, can be short or not too long or too short. As long as the ideas are good and can resolve issues.

Singapore and Japan launched a "residence track" travel arrangement for business executives and professionals who are work pass holders.

"The residence track will provide for the movement of business executives and business professionals who are work pass holders, with the necessary public health safeguards in place," said Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a statement on Friday (Sep 25).

The residence track comes in addition to the business track, also known as "reciprocal green lane", which was launched on Sep 18 and facilitates short-term essential business and official travel between the two countries.

Local food manufacturers can now apply to list their products on the FairPrice Marketplace platform, under an initiative that will help them improve their visibility in the market and allow them to test the reception to their new items.

The initiative, called YummySG!, was launched by Enterprise Singapore (ESG) and FairPrice Online on Friday (Sep 25).

The initiative "provides Singapore food manufacturers with an additional platform to diversify their revenue streams", said Enterprise Singapore and NTUC FairPrice in a media release.

Long time back, when you drop a resume into a few blue chips companies, you got call up for interview and even job offers from few companies.

You can choose which one to accept.

Now I heard even you send hundreds of resume, you will be lucky if you get 1 interview and you won't get a job.

This happens in the last few years.

People begin to wonder is it too many foreigners, is it too little jobs, or is it obsolete skillset or obsolete industries.

Valli

[1:14 pm, 25/09/2020] +: I totally support this.

Going forward more support should be given to local startups to encourage them

Ken

[1:14 pm, 25/09/2020] +: True.. last 2 years I send 50 only 4 got back for interview. 2 offered.

But either I am from different track or cause basic is high. I am not sure.

When I was dip applying for second job I sent out 10 get 10 interview . 20 to 50% increase in pay.

[1:14 pm, 25/09/2020] +: 5 offered

[1:22 pm, 25/09/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: This is the real job seeking scenario share by many people that I have talk to.

I am shock by the sudden drastic deterioration in job seeking in Singapore when our economy are still doing very well.

I thus have been pondering what actually went wrong.

CQ

[1:16 pm, 25/09/2020] +: So when they decide to come here for work, their personal lives are literally put on hold? That's a little harsh....

Ken

[1:17 pm, 25/09/2020] +: Eventually hopefully they can earn enough to compete with overseas farmers

[1:21 pm, 25/09/2020] +: Hopefully they can drop to profitability and even export eventually. A hope that we have to invest heavily

[1:21 pm, 25/09/2020] +: Taiwan is doing it well.. for some industry. Although land a lot bigger but they produce enough to even export for some

Berny

[1:25 pm, 25/09/2020] +: those are considered a "premium item" that's why the price, having said that, are Singaporeans willing to pay more for their veggies to support the local farmers? or will they stick to the conventional "cheapest option" out there

[1:26 pm, 25/09/2020] +: that's where skillsfuture credit comes in handy

Ken

[1:27 pm, 25/09/2020] +: That the mindset we have to change

[1:27 pm, 25/09/2020] +: If we want local produce to be successful

Valli

[1:29 pm, 25/09/2020] +: Yes this is very true.  A foreigner settle here with PR /citizenship, EP or work permit and he start bringing in his relations and this happens in a cycle, where another & another brings in their relations.

This is very common.

Berny

[1:25 pm, 25/09/2020] +: The world is improving... hence if we didn’t get better we lose jobs to those country that are improving.

As a country develop the improvement is very incremental. As other countries catch up their pay is much lower jobs slowly will goes to them.

There is no need to worry about robots and machines replacing humans or if people can learn to beat computers.

Instead, the way forward for tomorrow's workers is to double down on human strengths, said Education Minister Lawrence Wong.

Berny

[2:10 pm, 25/09/2020] +: There are certain sectors where robots cannot replace human, eg. Hospital, or any job that requires the "human touch". Having said that, robots are able to provide some form of automation to speed things up, but the end user must be able to capitalise it to benefit the company. Ultimately... it's still back to square 1, upskilling to remain competitive

Ken

[2:12 pm, 25/09/2020] +: I am actually working on a few quality checking via image analysis. To reduce like 400 to 1000 man hours of manual checking.

[2:12 pm, 25/09/2020] +: And 100% error proof but so far only 98% but better than human might have error

Berny

[2:12 pm, 25/09/2020] +: This is useful, it can eventually replace most of the worker in the aspect, but we will still need to do random QC or have some standby just in case system breakdown or have some glitch

Ken

[2:13 pm, 25/09/2020] +: Yes the system is setup by QC personal which is me

[2:13 pm, 25/09/2020] +: I have to come up with all the possible down time and errors in the system

[2:13 pm, 25/09/2020] +: To as much as possible reduce error as much as I can to ensure reliability

Berny

[2:14 pm, 25/09/2020] +: but in this context, if a factory worker (as an example) is aware of this change, and is willing to upskill, he/she might be able to retain the job and even get promoted to the QC staff

[2:14 pm, 25/09/2020] +: but of course, all these are on "paper discussion", on the ground and actual thing might be different

Ken

[2:14 pm, 25/09/2020] +: The system is quite complex not by normal stuff they can teach to operate but not design or change the system

Ben

[2:14 pm, 25/09/2020] +: Yes - this is good messaging! Humans will always have more value than Robots in the big picture. People worry about the manual tasks that will be done by Robots and instead should this is as an opportunity for humans to elevate themselves. it will require a concerted effort and lots of support though.

Ken

[2:14 pm, 25/09/2020] +: I work with the ground to use the system not a paper engineer

Berny

[2:15 pm, 25/09/2020] +: nono, i meant my point, not saying you are paper engineer

[2:15 pm, 25/09/2020] +: i mean the points that i raised are on paper discussion and may sound wonderful or perfect

Ken

[2:15 pm, 25/09/2020] +: These kind of project requires more manpower and not cheap that’s for sure

[2:15 pm, 25/09/2020] +: One project can hire one person to care already

Berny

[2:16 pm, 25/09/2020] +: but the ROI is way better, if company is willing to embrace technology

Part 1

In the old school economics 101, Land (& natural resources), Labour and Capital are the 3 factors of production.

When gov talks about population, is gov worrying about Labour as a factor of production. Decrease means consequential stagnation of economy. When layman, talks about population, what comes to mind is competition, crowding, losing out whether the issues stem from foreigners or not. Because the policy boost talent import, and our baby dearth problem, it's very natural to blame it on foreigners.

The competition from job market didn't start this year. The pandemic made it more obvious to more people and all of a sudden, everyone looks at foreigners as main contributor of job competition.

Have we noticed, when we walk into day a Chinese bank, all the staff are native Chinese nationals? I wondered. Did they invest but at the same time, bring over their own people, processes and systems?

My friend said, large scale infrastructure projects by China in other countries operate the same way, bring in their machinery (techonlogy), their engineers, workers etc. Complete, collect revenue and handover. I saw a video on how the laying of railroad was automated. How can the local engineers contribute? No idea of how to operate the huge railroad robot, certainly no way to even be a maintenance engineer.

A young graduate who audits Chinese firm could not tell if this firm hires Singaporean. All he met were Chinese nationals.

If this is a model of foreign investment, then it still contributed to economy but create few good jobs.

We have to reexamine our education system. It is very effective in producing knowledgeable skilled workers. But they not so at producing competing smartly at workplace. There are many types of soft skills at play.

They are aware that there are doors. But didn't think and realise that there are backdoors and even other doors.

Recent review into the NUS approach to offer more broad based education is certainly welcome but many of the social, communication, negotiation, debating skills have to start very young. Otherwise, all our young will become very frustrated playing workhorses roles reporting to incompetent managers but smart at manipulating them. They burn out and become disillusioned.

Large MNCs which use to allow their staff to bid for overseas placement are practicing virtual secondment. Stay where you are (at home) and you now work for xxx country.

To the older worker, cannot lah, very difficult lah. To young graduates, no past baggage, no choice, just try lah. Interestingly, I see hope and resilience in our young. Waking up at wee hours because have to follow overseas office hours. Insecure managers calling and checking on them repeatedly , , learning to conform to foreign cultures virtually etc.

I'm afraid, this may become the norm in the future and there will be few jobs for young Singaporeans because they are unaware that jobs have gone virtual and they lose out without even knowing what and why.

The issue of immigration than to me becomes a short to medium term issue.

If job market virutalised, then foreigners just need to stay in a country that has robust IT infrastructure and with a well-wired home.

Then it bags the question, why people want to migrate to singapore. Jobs are offered virtually from source countries or Singapore?

Should there be more radical and bold imagination that we should have a different class of citizens and PRs. Digital citizens and PRs. We need them to contribute taxes and contribute to jobs in Singapore but they don't need to be here and live here. This will solve our over crowding problem. And for our own young, knowledge and skills not enough. Cannot debate, their hardwork credit went to other people. When comes to retrenchment, cannot articulate value to company. So wasted.

REACH - Considerations for a F35B aicraft carrier - in lieu of hotbed tension in Taiwan and Guam as well as limited air space

24 Sep 2020 5.48pm

1. Our Taiwan Starlight armour base risk scenario is now becoming higher as China-US-Taiwan geopolitical tension rises - and the frequency and intensity of more dangerous air and sea drill in Taiwan Straits has intensified.

2. If I am not wrong our Airforce is negotiating for an airforce detachment to be base in Guam - 4,700 km away. Guam is strategic and well placed - but unfortunately both China and NKorea are targeting the Guam with nuclear bombers and nuclear missile with simulation and actual launch as Guam has US nuclear bomber detachment - which will cause collateral damage to us - as our detachment also come under the nuclear radar.

3. Also our air space are being squeeze with demand for changes in the FIR (Flight Information Region) under our control.

4. With the above 2 changing scenario that put our overseas base at risk - there is a need to consider a "floating base" that can allow us to navigate away from danger zone and go anywhere we want ---- and hence we should consider building a "nuclear-powered" F35B aircraft carrier.

5. F35B have a short-takeoff capability of 150 meters and vertical landing - which make a small cost effective aircraft carrier suitable for our operational needs.

6. Also a "nuclear-powered" aircraft carrier will virtually dispense with the needs of regular re-fuelling - that allow our carrier to be station outside a land based shore for a long long time.

7. This will ensure our F35B survivability as we have limited land spaces at home and allow diversification and survivability of our airforce military assets - to facilitate a "2nd strike" capability.

8. By having a "floating base" will secure ourselves away from war in hosting countries but at the same time, allow our carrier to participate in joint exercise and build relationship with friendly nations by berthing in ports with friendly nations.

9. Our submarines and frigates can be put into good used to escort our carrier - with anti-air and anti-ships capabilities --- and thus preserving and securing both our air and naval assets --- to allow us to have "2nd strike capability" and overcome our limited land space, sea space and air space at home.

10. We can do a cost-benefit analysis - by comparing the cost of maintaining a small carrier fleet versus leasing cost bases in Taiwan and Guam.

11. We should continue to maintain overseas bases in Australia, US, France etc for training purposes as well as maintaining strategic good relationship with hosting Countries plus preserving and securing our "2nd strike" capability.

12. Note :- We should have a proactive evacuation plan for our armor base in Taiwan Starlight base and Guam (if we already have assets placement there) -- for our personnel and assets station over there - should tension rise to a level that war is imminent.

Please note that to evacuate an armor units need heavy-lift landing ships and needs weeks to extract all our assets and personnel - while if war break out, Mach 1.5 to 2 fighter planes will only needs multiple minutes to hit the base.

US, China, India, EU, Japan, SKorea can make it.

Singapore market so small how to groom $100 billion company.

Only gic and Temasek Holdings can.
