There has been a driving demand from seniors for assisted co-living arrangements in public housing flats, where tenants rent the units and share the caregivers. This is in line with HDB’s 2018 survey where it was found that there was a growing preference among seniors to ‘age in place’.

Red Crowns Senior Living offers such co-living arrangements as it assists to rent properties on the open market and sublets them for use as an alternative to nursing homes. The company also handles the property maintenance and manages the caregivers and care coordinators who ensure the well-being of the residents.

πŸ’¬ What are your thoughts on the assisted co-living arrangements concept for seniors? What more can be done to provide better housing and caregiving support to our seniors?

While there is growing demand for assisted co-living arrangements in public housing flats, flat supply is limited and rental prices are increasing. In September 2022, there was a launch for sale by public tender for the pilot private assisted-living facility for seniors. The facility is not intended to be a full substitute for nursing home care but will function as a long-term residential accommodation. The operator of this facility is expected to maintain at least 100 nursing home beds and provide shared community spaces, social programmes and social services.

The public assisted-living facility in Bukit Batok, Community Care Apartments, has also been successful in providing care and support for seniors. Community Care Apartments come with a mandatory service package which includes 24-hour emergency monitoring and response service, basic health checks, simple home fixes and activities at the communal spaces within the development.

[10:58 am, 03/04/2023] +Rama: Good initiative but more in depth information needed to understand

[11:03 am, 03/04/2023] +Umar M: Wonderful initiative in theory but remains to be seen in practice. While it may stymie loneliness and mental deterioration, the challenges would be pairing a suitable senior with another as there could be a myriad of factors to consider when it comes to co-living. For example; dietary preferences, mobility, hobbies/habits etc.

[11:05 am, 03/04/2023] +Uncle Law: Those who are abled and still can work, should encourage them to upskill and have a chance of owning their own flat

[11:05 am, 03/04/2023] +Rama: Daily dose of anonymity welcome

[11:13 am, 03/04/2023] +Smiley face: Hi Andrew, good morning and a rainy Monday!

A good day to talk about ageing...!

Thank you.

[11:20 am, 03/04/2023] +Rama: Yes

[11:20 am, 03/04/2023] +S. Tan: I think it is a good idea. There are retirement villages and communities for dementia patients that have worked very well overseas. The challenge is in the implementation and design of such communities. Living conditions should not be so oppressive (e.g. communal baths, sleeping areas), but at the same time not so isolating like HDB flats.

[11:22 am, 03/04/2023] +Rama: The cost of renting the properties for this initiative must be constant so as not to increase cost.

"Ageing, it can either be miserable or it can be full of fun and meaningful so much so she/he forgot the last day (aka Run Out Date)...how to make ageing fun than horrible?"

What is mobility?

Mental - sound minded, positive and engaging or not in the mind (mood) to do things.

Physical - able to move, has a full,/part time job, self-enable or disabled due to health.

Social - spouse, family, relatives and friends, the compact? Financially stable or able? Activities with fellow seniors and or "younger" seniors. Community/common activities that are more popular for seniors to take part in it.

    - - in progress - -

[11:36 am, 03/04/2023] +Smiley face: Constant cost means subsidies will increase over time.

Thank you.

[11:38 am, 03/04/2023] +Smiley face: Perhaps, this co-living model is the baseline for seniors to consider and adapt.

There are ways more than this model.

We need to mobilise our thoughts and pull all resources whether it is money or helps to stand by this big ageing initiative!

Thank you.

[11:49 am, 03/04/2023] +Rama: Which means taxes must be monitored

[11:51 am, 03/04/2023] +Smiley face: Yes, look at the indirect tax regime...a million here and there will add to a billion!

Thank you

[11:55 am, 03/04/2023] +Smiley face: One thought, hope it helps to see things from a different perspective...

[11:56 am, 03/04/2023] +Smiley face: "The creator of time allows anyone to create time in whatever geometric...The day before yesterday, today, and the day after tomorrow. Time itself, is either a linear progression or a circulation in orbit. All these time is ignorance, coincidence, synchronise, is suspicion, and is superstition,..?"

1. I think there are growing number of elderly that needs elderlyy care as our population ages.

2. Such elderly will need assisted living due to the following conditions :-

a. Mental deterioration - eg. dermentia

b. Physical deterioration - eg. unable to walk without aid, need help in basic physiological needs like toilet assistance among others.

c. Caregivers not readily available at home.

3. Hence public or private assisted elderly community care is a good idea - so that elderly that need nursing care for day-to-day living can help these elderly live well in their twilight years.

I fully support this assisted co-living arrangements concept for seniors.

4. However, I will also like to comment that the Government HIP (Home Improvement Programme) also did a good job --- in upgrading older flats to be more elderly friendly eg. providing hand-bars in toilets to help elderly, anti-skid treatment of wet bathroom floor, ramps at the door if elderly needs to be in the PMA or wheelchairs to move around.

This is helpful for elderly who want to live well and aged at home as there will be hundred of thousands will belong to elderly category - and it is not possible to accomodate all elderly in the co-assisted living programme.

The HIP elderly friendly upgrading comes timely.

[1:25 pm, 03/04/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

5. However, wonder what is the cost of staying in such co--assisted elderly housing - as sometimes lower income elderly will need such programme more than higher income elderly as they can engage private elderly care.

[1:46 pm, 03/04/2023] +~L: Sorry Reach, I know this is hugely off-topic.... I've notice the Likely Scam sms tag is now grouping all my messages together on the phone from any company not registered. Whether it be the Dr, the Delivery company, even Microsoft.... it's really annoying. Is this part of the Online Protection scheme. It's really backfiring!

On the Subject of Assisted Housing, I agree that community care is important to help relieve the pressure on families. Ideally family time will be recreational and sociable, whereas care will be provided by trained professionals.

1. Talking about *simple home fixes" - understand that HDB appoint "GoFix" on its website - I think privately run org to provide simple home fixes such as electrical fixes, plumbling fixes, aircon fixes etc.

2. When I used it to call for electrical fixes to change my home heater electrical socket and a bedroom electrical socket, I was very disappointed with the service.

a. I call the GoFix hotline as publish in the HDB websiite, I was told to install the GoFix App.

b. However, when I downloaded the GoFix App - choose the electrical item $63 each, I was not able to choose the date and time slot. I called the GoFix hotline again and she say I need to reinstall the App which I did - but still the same problem. She told me there is nothing she can do - even though I told her to fix the appointment for me.

c. Then I managed to access GoFix website to do it via web services, I managed to reach the booking of data and time slot ---- but I can't choose a date later than that day - and only 2 timeslot is available which is consider "urgent cases".

I am expected to pay "double the amount"  even though I don't consider my case "urgent" and need to pay double the amount.

3. Then I call the town council, my town councial say I can only call HDB.

4. Then I search for NTUC home fix - but I no longer can find such services.

5. I gave up and then call my previous HIP contractor - who only quote me "$50" for the 2 electtrical sockets - install by a certified electrician.

6. I check the comments by those who use GoFix - and almost all give very bad comments about GoFix.

7. I suggest HDB look into such "HomeFix" -- as many residents are at the mercy of unable to get a reasonable and trusted contractors to do some simple home fixing without being fleece.

To: Our Distinguished Leaders, Experts, Planners and Honorable Members

"Ageing: Mobility & Mobilise! Just When You Think You Have It?"

What is mobility and ability?

Activities that seniors (PG+MG)

encounter on a daily basis if not frequently facing challenges and or difficulties in accessing ways to obtain life basic conveniences.

These are examples of the basic chores; groceries, medical attentions, stay physically active, mental engagements, financially independent and various modes of transportation.

The degrees of ageing, disability and unable?

Partial to full disabilities, covering all age groups.

Ageing to birth disorders are included in this action plans. All disabilities are interconnected and time based challenges.

Comfortable and adequate co-living space and the physical environments outside of the home that is friendlier for seniors to adapt and cope with their "slower" pace and needs.

"Everything new now will be  well passe (forgotten) sooner or later..."

- - anonymity

Planning the future?

Is it prudent to plan up to 50% of the total ageing population that is defined as 65 years and above - housings, medicals and basics?

50/50 model?

This model of half-half is based on the assumptions that half of our seniors are able to care for themselves till their last days. They are financially sound and have child, children or siblings supporting the ageing needs.

The other half of the ageing population has a spectrum of needs, special needs and other helpings unthinkable now that policymakers will have to plan in greater length and depth to achieve the least disruptions or it will become a situation whereby the infrastructures are not sufficient to cope with this half of the seniors.

"What you created today has many future effects and significance; how you treat one another is another paradigm because human learn from seeing and experiencing... Most importantly, the young seen it and they learned it all,... Hopefully, the individual psychologies changed for the better or feeling hopeless or for the worse, don't see hope...!"

- - anonymity

How to mobilise resources and helps for our ageing population?

It is best to do more than less or doing just to sustain over time? Before 2030, we should have in hand a robust, tested and broad based plan for up to 50% of our ageing Seniors of age 65 years and above, a well covered comprehensive ageing care plans from daily needs to the end of the day.

Conceige services that cater to essential needs for the 30% (while the other 20% are more able, responsive and active) of Seniors?

Should the future cost of livings continue to rise so much that it is twice or thrice of our neighouring countries? Alternatively, one way for the financially able Seniors or rent the HDB flat to others and take the rental income to stay long term in Thailand or Malaysia or China or Taiwan and spent relaxing and fun time overseas when medical needs arise, fly home or insurance policy that allows you to be hospitalised in any of the listed countries.

Are these possibilities that may happen in the future?
