Early childhood educators will have a five-day work week from 1 Jan 2025, when childcare centres will no longer be mandated to provide their services on Saturdays.

This is part of ongoing efforts to improve the educators’ working conditions, said the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) on Wednesday.

πŸ’¬ *What are your views on the ongoing efforts to improve early childhood (EC) educators’ working conditions? How can we better support our EC educators in their work as part of the EC Industry Transformation Map 2025?*

πŸ“Œ *Early Childhood Industry Transformation Map 2025*

Minister Masagos also launched the Early Childhood Industry Transformation Map 2025. This is the second road map, following the one in 2018, and focuses on jobs and skills.

ECDA will work with stakeholders such as pre-school operators and educators to develop innovative and quality pre-school services, such as building larger childcare centres for more efficient operations and exploring new and flexible service models.

It will also drive digital transformation to improve productivity and service delivery. The sector will work to become more resilient, such as against pandemics, with enhanced business continuity capabilities.

13/07/2023, 10:37 am - +KL: Is pre school important or just to look after children while parents doing work ?

13/07/2023, 10:38 am - +KL: To me is just another word for price hike thou

13/07/2023, 10:40 am - +KL: So next prediction will be weekend child care is twice the price of normal days . Again who hit most ? Whose can’t work from home and need work weekend one .

13/07/2023, 10:50 am - +SL: Usually, not all parents send kids to the childcare centre on Saturday as (1) a family bonding day (2) not all parents or family members work on Saturday, althought there are parents (x% ) who do work. Is Saturday a working day for the educator to prepare material in the centre? If yes, that is the administrative arrangement between the centre and the educator.

13/07/2023, 10:56 am - +Timothy Low: Child Care Teachers also need their work-life balance, just like their primary/secondary/JC counterparts. In the first place their salary is already not as high as them, why make them work longer hours? Unless the centre is willing to pay them more

13/07/2023, 10:59 am - +Dan: Its long overdue. Unfortunately, the transformation is not immediate.

13/07/2023, 10:59 am - +Jimmy Chew: agree, mothers were encouraged by government to work, this is the impact of their policies.

13/07/2023, 10:59 am - +Jimmy Chew: not all companies close on Saturday

13/07/2023, 11:00 am - +Jimmy Chew: whose going to look after them?

13/07/2023, 11:01 am - +Jimmy Chew: too many prices increased pushed to the consumer, plastics bags, town council services, and now indirectly the parents. hahahaha.. same modus operandi

13/07/2023, 11:01 am - +KL: I call them educators but not teacher , do anyone really saw them how they teach ?

13/07/2023, 11:06 am - +Jimmy Chew: yeap, it's preparing, like putting you into a lukewarm waters in a pan soon the heat will turn up. hahaha

13/07/2023, 11:07 am - +Jimmy Chew: be interesting to know who has the highest childcare center in singapore

13/07/2023, 11:14 am - +Uncle Law: EC Educators also have their children to attend to, especially in the early morning (i.e. sending children to school, or to childcare). Hence they should be allowed to start work say, from 8am.

Interim timing between 7 to 8am, the centre can consider hiring retirees as teacher-assistant. This way our EC educators have a work-life balance.

13/07/2023, 11:15 am - +Uncle Law: support the plan to a 5 days work schedule for EC Educators.

for parents who need to work on weekend, they can either request directly with the centre, perhaps pay more for the service, since the centre would need to hire additional staffs to man the centre on saturday.

13/07/2023, 11:26 am - +Frankie Wee: Extra pay service for weekend

13/07/2023, 11:32 am - +Jeffrey: https://twitter.com/TheChiefNerd/status/1674266437890744323

As a result of the covid vaccines and the presidential run of Robert F Kennedy Jr, we now have more questions about childhood vaccines. RFK Jr says that the chickenpox vaccine causes worse shingles problems and is thus not recommended in Europe (this can be verified by the NHS UK website)

Another claim is that the childhood vaccines are not properly tested. This Q&A has been watched by millions worldwide. The FDA should respond to this soon, otherwise we can only assume the worst. There has been a sudden increase in number of autism and behavioural problems in young children. While many factors, not just vaccines, may be at play, the prudent thing to do is to do more testing of all factors, including childhood vaccines.

13/07/2023, 11:34 am - +SL: According to the msf website link shared above: item #8 b may answer your concern.

8.   To allow more educators to benefit from this change earlier, starting from 1 January 2024, we will:

a.   Allow childcare centres to not operate on Saturdays if there is no demand.

b.   Allow operators with multiple centres to aggregate demand and operate designated centre(s) on Saturdays.

c.   Allow childcare centres to state in their service agreement with parents that there will be no Saturday childcare service for new enrolments from 1 January 2024 onwards. New childcare centres starting operations in 2024 will not be required to provide Saturday service.

13/07/2023, 11:35 am - +~L: Make the learning experience better for both kids and teachers. Part of burn out comes from the pressure put on kids and teachers by focusing so much on PSLE results.

13/07/2023, 11:35 am - +~L: Working conditions isn't just about pay and time off.

13/07/2023, 11:36 am - +~L: I know this is about EC, but it's all part of the education system.

13/07/2023, 11:36 am - +SL: Also, bring back seniors who like to continue working back in the labor market πŸ‘

13/07/2023, 11:37 am - +~L: I do think 5 day week is much better for staff, so bring in more people to support a 6 day opening for Saturday morning too

13/07/2023, 11:43 am - +Frankie Wee: Parent need time to spent child care. Instead they work on weekend.

Or sent to grandparents look after

13/07/2023, 11:44 am - +Rama: Parents who have to work on Saturday compulsory will be hard hit. Employers will not understand.  Grand Parents will not look after the toddler . So, left with domestic helpers!?

13/07/2023, 11:46 am - +Rama: Still, staff at child care services need a proper work life balance themselves.

13/07/2023, 11:48 am - +Uncle Law: cant have the best of both worlds, if all on Mon to Fri work schedule, means no shops or services will be open or provided on weekend

13/07/2023, 11:49 am - +Uncle Law: we can look at how to maximise the workforce, pulling in those who wish to work on freelance (esp on short hours basis), to help support the centre if they are required to open on Saturday

13/07/2023, 11:51 am - +Rama: This must be a steady and reliable source with acceptable wages and hours.

13/07/2023, 11:55 am - +Jimmy Chew: If company don't agree. We can continue talking. Not all company agree on 5 days week. Took my company 10 years before they agreed

13/07/2023, 11:56 am - +Jimmy Chew: After they implemented productivity went up

13/07/2023, 11:57 am - +Jimmy Chew: We had to change working time from 9 to 6pm

13/07/2023, 11:57 am - +Jimmy Chew: I understand some company if they need to work on Saturday, they rotate them

13/07/2023, 12:01 pm - +Frankie Wee: Childcare leave should have provide

13/07/2023, 12:04 pm - +Uncle Law: i think the following system can consider:

0700 - Childcare Centre opens (Handled by Interim staff/Teacher Assistant)

0800 - Normal Curriculum (Handled by EC Educators)

1700 - End of Normal Curriculum / Take over by Interim Staff/Teacher Assistant)

1900 - Centre Closing

13/07/2023, 12:18 pm - +Jimmy Chew: Seniors don't like Saturday and Sunday because they wanna spend time with grandchildren hahaha

13/07/2023, 12:22 pm - +Jimmy Chew: Seems reasonable but yet not. If the center has one child then that parent has to send their kid to another center.

13/07/2023, 12:23 pm - +~L: Yes, maybe centres hire additional people to cover Saturdays

13/07/2023, 12:25 pm - +SL: From the operator's perspective, if the number of children is below x%, not sure if it is fair for them to operate without a premium if they do not go for the consolidated centre (with transport provided?)

13/07/2023, 1:33 pm - ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

*Merits of Pre-school Education*

1. 1st I want to discuss the merits of pre-school education to children.

a. Children at the early age are very inquisitive at their formative growing up and they can pick up things very quickly.

b. Notably, they are attentive to language through speech, TV, handphone social media, how people behave and how they respond to stimulus.

c. Hence pre-school education becomes very important to lay the foundation for young children in learning and engaging the world in a positive environment - so that they can have a wholesome development mentally, in social interaction with other children, and physically as they learn to engage to play games, dance or other physical activities.

2. Hence pre-school education is not just about releasing parents' time to work while putting young kids into the pre-school.

3. It is about a more structure, systematic and professional approach in child development - hence Pre-school education is an important aspect of child education - to set the right footing for young children.

4. It has been observed that young children who have attended pre-school are more confident, more lively, can interact better and respond better to primary school education when they have to attend the compulsory Primary school.

13/07/2023, 1:45 pm - +Smiley face: "The learning brain and the growing brains will evolve over time; at early childhood, at teenage and overtime. It is paramount to check these capacities and abilities of the human brains at various intervals especially at the formative age of growing up from the first 6 years, the following 10 years and into adulthood."

13/07/2023, 1:46 pm - ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

*Better work-life balance for pre-school educators*

1. Like all workforce in Singapore, pre-school educators are also entitle to better work-life balance.

2. In fact, I was surprise that pre-school educators are mandated to open on Saturday.

3. During my time in pre-school and my child time in pre-school, I can't remember going to kindergarden on Saturday nor sending my child to kindergarden on Saturday.

Hence I am surprised that pre-school open on Saturday.

4. Saturday should be a family day for the child and their parents &/or grandparents.

5. Hence I support the closing of pre-school educators on Saturday as the pre-school teachers deserve a good rest and they also need time for their own family to enjoy the family day.

6. Singapore population are below replacement level.

Hence a proper work life balance for all our workforce - including our pre-school educators is imperative.

Hopefully, with more balanced work-life, pre-school are able to recruit more teachers, allow current staff to have more rest and more motivated, spend productive time with the family - and bear more babies to grow our population.

13/07/2023, 1:53 pm - ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

5. But of course, one important benefit of pre-school education also provide working parents a peace of mind by putting their kids in pre-school for baby-sitting so that they know that their children are in safe pair of hands, allow their children to learn and develop - and working parents can concentrate on their work, contribute to the company and economy and earn income to sustain their family.

6. With most jobs work days are Mon-Fri, demand for pre-school education on Sat become less imperative.

7. Also for some parents who need to work on Saturday, quite unlikely both parents work on the weekend - so that one of the non-working parent can take care of the children.

13/07/2023, 1:54 pm - +Smiley face: "Into the next phase and facts of life"

How the children (primary) are coping with schools when the parent has to work full time (occasional OT as part of job scope or two jobs) and especially after school hours till the parent arrives home?

How can civic societies, volunteer groups and policymakers champion in SYNC to deal with such unequal life's journeys for these young ones?

What if there are thousands of such sample examples and what will become of these growing children into their adulthood?

Where are interventions and how soon in their early childhood life to "pick" them up before "things" go the wrong paths and to no point of returning to the mainstream of society?

Returning to pre-school times, that's the starting phase and life...

*ITM to refresh the Pre-school education to remain relevancy, to respond to disruptive tech eg. AI, new innovative and creative learning method*

1. I still recall 1 May 2012 Labour Day, when the idea of ITM (Industry Transformation Map) is coin - to tackle disruptive tech across many respective industries and across the boad - transforming many traditional skillsets, business methods that have turn obsolete, turn business from sunrise to sunset industries - into more relevant skillsets and business methods to survive and thrive in their business.

2. ITM form a very effective tool and more structured approach to periodically relook how the industries are transforming, what skillsets are turning obsolete, how new areas of the business and skillsets have emerged arising from new disruptive tech to make current ways of conducting business, current skillsets obsolete - and need to transform to remain relevant and grow.

3. Very please that DPM Heng announce the adoption of ITM in Budget 2016 as tool to periodically relook, refresh and transform industries sector by sector.

Now Pre-school education also benefited from the 2nd ITM refresh - so that our pre-schoolers can benefit from new approach to pre-school education.

How about the future of a four day work week? Will these pre-schools open on the fifth day or e-learnings at home for the older ones age 5 to 6 or no?

Where and how to get the kinder teachers to conduct these weekends classes for age 2 to 7?

In order to attain the proper certification of a kinder teacher or manager/director/owner; trainee teachers under the MOE or other accredited studies for kinder education will serve up to 400 hours ($10/hr) of work at these centers exposed to all age groups and teach a minimum of two subjects. Those who aspire to take on administration or management positions of kindergarten will also be included in these weekends"live lessons" performing similar roles of a center manager or director.

How to access these "live" trainings?

Compliments and letter of appreciation or surveys from centers and from parents or grandparent and members of Public. Compliant wise, there will be a demerit points system that will reflect into the trainee's record book or in worse cases, failed as a teacher!

Is this your cup of tea for life?

The idea of training an able, battle ready and an early experience young teacher or a manager or a director....

13/07/2023, 5:42 pm - +SL: Online search indicated ausstdies showing multiple universities in Australia offer diploma, bachelor, and master degrees in early childhood teaching. Maybe the centre can consider giving out scholars for educators attending University @ Australia to learn new skillsets?

13/07/2023, 5:48 pm - +SL: According to the website, it indicated a wide range of opportunities with experience for early childhood educators, social workers, policy advisors, research scientists, preschool/kindergarten directors, child psychologists, education researchers/consultants, early childhood educators, childcare centre / non-profit program manager, family services coordinator, etc.. A good prospect to work as an early childhood educator and move up the career path.

13/07/2023, 5:54 pm - +Smiley face: Excellent reporting! SL!

Now let's extend this idea of upping the service and professionalism to Ageing!

Managing and Administrations of Ageing facilities?

Thanks.

To me as a third party hearing the ridiculous work she does and  the administration that goes with it versus her pay, she is being abused and she doesn't know it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

" The Economics of KinderCare, ABC!"

How about Community Clubs/Centres/existing Pre-school?

Perhaps, PA and the Constituency Director should assess the needs & wants of the residences for Saturday Kinder programs? Either Saturday or Sunday or both;  Public holidays closed!

MPs to bridge these initiatives, it is another chance to connect and communicate with her/his constituency?

ABC? (δΈ€δΊŒδΈ‰)

How to assess these "live" trainings?

Compliments and letter of appreciation or surveys from centers and from parents or grandparent and members of Public. Compliant wise, there will be a demerit points system that will reflect into the trainee's record book or in worse cases, failed as a teacher!

Is this your cup of tea for life?

The idea of training an able, battle ready and an early experience young teacher or a manager or a director.

Afterwords:

"Play harder and Pay later or..."

"By the 6th years, a child, she or he would have learned the kinder basics of languages, facts and numbers. Also the teachers would known and identified the child's academic strengths and weaknesses including character of a child."

How to formulate an education and trainings programs of the future? Are the instructors, teachers, and professors good enough and up to speed of things?

Identify and Match?

Using an early psychoanalysis tests on students at three stages: age of 12, 14 and 16.

What are the areas to test at a progressive manner? It is not an IQ nor Aptitude driven test! It is an Adaptability and Association of skills, arts and techniques. It is the deciding test of the means and the limits of our future workforce in the digital ways of working and living!

These test results will give an early insights into our cohort of students and the larger picture of our future digitised workforce distribution of labor and level and types of skill trainings and the gaps between those who are in the analog mode and bridging this digital tools and technique into the daily work for this laggards group, and at the same time upgrade those who are tech savvy to higher level of digital competency and productivity at the workplace.

"The Tools, The Techniques, and The Technical of AI...When you keep in touch with these digital tools, your techniques and knowledge will improve. When you stay away from these digital gargets, you will be redundant soonest than later!"

Today, there is an urgent task to embrace and empower all of our students to know what is the Soft and the Heart of digital technology that is bots, robots, algorithm, coding, structural, maintenance, engineering and how to use the various digital tools to productive use. From basic knowledge onto higher machine learnings, deep learnings, advanced codings and maintenance of systems, build machines, automations including robots; all of these require a sets of different techniques and it will be highly technical especially for those who need to operate or to man the highest precision of productions in pursuing exceptional results (99%-100% accuracy) and out of the world breakthroughs in future technological capabilities both the Soft and the Heart of it !

"Resetting the generational mindsets of the general mental abilities conquer most or all (GMA) ? Now, its all about new ways of looking and a new mindset. Scholars don't equal to Talents and neither one adds up to the others becoming a great leader and if happened, it's a one in a million chances! There are innate abilities in human, several attributes and more to consider that personify the refreshing meanings of Bravery, Boldness, Creativity and importantly, Character and why so? Its all because of this AI !"

One way is to learn from Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Germany and the US. What are the lessons and opportunities in all these inroads of educating their population. And how these digital technologies, electronics engineering, materials science, chemistry and biology are taught at the young age and onto the institute of higher learnings? What methods and  systems worked for each of the country and how adaptable will it be to our present and future educations and trainings ecosystem?
