[9:59 am, 15/08/2022] +REACH: ๐Ÿ“ข Topic ๐Ÿ“ข

During the National Day Dinner at Tanjong Pagar CC on 13 Aug, Minister Chan Chun Sing shared that the society has to embrace and accept a broader definition of success. He said that society should not emphasise only on the measurable success, but also value other aspects that may not be easily quantified, but is perhaps more important. This was shared as part of Minister Chan’s vision for a new social compact as part of the Forward Singapore exercise to engage Singaporeans in shaping Singapore’s future.

He highlighted that everyone has a role to play in redefining success in Singapore. Parents should support and embrace their children’s choice in an educational path that is aligned with their strengths and interests. The community should celebrate and reward diversity in talent. Meanwhile, industries should be agile in its hiring processes, and value the skills, character and potential of their workers instead of relying on early education background as the measure of success. The recognition of redefined success is essential to ensure that every student can maximise their potential regardless of their background.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What do you think is important in the broader definition of success in Singapore? How can we ensure that the redefinition of success is embraced in the years to come?

Minister Chan highlighted 3 key traits that could distinguish Singapore as it renews its social compact:

๐Ÿ”น Achieving Our Best: Everyone can fulfil their potential, regardless of their background

๐Ÿ”น Enabling Our Best: Strive to leave a better future for generations to come

๐Ÿ”น Giving Our Best: Everyone can contribute meaningfully regardless of their life stage

[10:15 am, 15/08/2022] +Ken Loh: Hmm we are will know for our kiasu..

now we want to be contented ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Drastic change in policy and mindset

[10:16 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Great to see some lateral thinking from the ministers! We are immersed in a world where success has become about money and popularity.  Success can something we define for ourselves - it's an individuals choice what that is. Society as a whole can have a definition too, just as family can and a community can.

[10:17 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Singapore does a good job recognising people's contribution; and can do more. However maybe it's more important for Singaporeans to know their own measure of success is what counts and to feel rewarded by their efforts to acheive that.

[10:17 am, 15/08/2022] +Ken Loh: Last time parents.. If don’t study well you don’t earn a good living and stuff

Now kid just do what you think is meaningful in life ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

[10:18 am, 15/08/2022] +Ken Loh: Hard to sell….

[10:18 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Let's give people an opportunity to define for themselves what is meaningful, and it starts with a good education and being aware of choices in life.

[10:19 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Good education doesn't just mean As in Maths, Science, English and MTL. That's good exam results (which are important) but there is much more someone can strive for and offer the world.

[10:20 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Our kids just seem to be immersed in going from exam to exam in school. Every term there are the same assessments recapping the last 2 months of repetitive questions and answers.

[10:20 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Almost no creative thinking, even in Subjects like English.

[10:21 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: So - yes, how to measure success? Well what is expected when the kids are given no room to think creatively for themselves?

[10:22 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: I think meritocracy is good, but it defines success in a very narrow way.

[10:23 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Perhaps we need to celebrate successes in many different ways, perhaps as part of our national day, which is very military focused.

[10:33 am, 15/08/2022] +Ken Loh: Cause when nation was young… we need workers not creative people… as we develop, more road are available, but mindset for success is more fixed over years of pushing for it

[10:37 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Yes, that totally makes sense, and was the right decision

[10:37 am, 15/08/2022] +Lock: and good point about the mindset - takes 2 generations to change that!

[11:13 am, 15/08/2022] +Rama: Done

[11:29 am, 15/08/2022] +RH: Er ... Ther is this thing in English lesson called ' Creative Writing' , which, sadly, most parents misinterpret as Composition writing.

Both hv the same initials  "CW" .

Sad to say, our kids r not tt creative when they are given set topic titles to write abt , like "Being Helpful", "A Good Deed", "Courage", "Teamwork" ... and so on.

Even w the aid of 3 pictures , the kids cannot come up w good, logical story lines ... Some dun even hv one.

From my observations, it has to do w exposure to the topic in question, lack of awareness, lack of personal experience / understanding.

Which brings us bk to parenting.

Many kids these days r latchkey kids. Some stay hm all day & r left to their own devices (literally, tt means their hp or tablet or computer games).

Education shd not just be confined to the classrooms.

Parents hv a role to play in moulding our children's characters.

Many a time however, parents just leave their kids at tuition centres all day while they themselves attend to their own biz.

Parents nd to find a balance in life to spend time w their kids to teach them life values.

In some cases, I think the parents themselves nd to attend classes on how to parent growing children, whenever I see extremely ill-behaved kids.

[11:33 am, 15/08/2022] +Rama: Sending kids for tuition at a very young age or otherwise should be discouraged. What parents need to teach their children (not others) is understanding and tolerance of other races religious beliefs, dress codes culture. Nothing degoratory .

[11:40 am, 15/08/2022] +Rama: Under our skin, we all the various blood types. On the surface, we are one human race and skin colour has no place!

[11:49 am, 15/08/2022] +RH: Here's some food for thot ...

Was chatting w a fren who migrated to Aus & bn living ther for >5 years.

She has 2 sons.

One was 'told to study medicine' @ Uni ther but kept failing. (father is Singaporean - insisted must be a pro to earn money).

Now the elder son is working as a waiter in a restaurant but earning better money than being a doctor !

Second son was supposed to start Uni studies few months ago. He decided not to do it but chose to work instead.

Now earning more as a retail asst in a luxury brand store than if he had bn an engineer ther or sth.

Point is :

Why bother to study so hard if the manual jobs pay more anyway?

๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

[0:05 pm, 15/08/2022] +Rama: For the same reason, elderly re-entering the work force should be judged on their ability to do the job and not based on education and last drawn salary.

Definition of Success in Singapore

1. I presume success should inherit the following attributes:-

a. Happiness

b. Ability to provide for and sustain self and family members standard of living and cost of living - through income from jobs, business or investment

c. Own a house to ensure self and family members live comfortably and harmoniously

d. No worries to be able to afford education, healthcare, recreation and leisure

e. Pass down inheritance to our descendants

[1:37 pm, 15/08/2022] +RH: Everyone's wish list ...

๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

[1:45 pm, 15/08/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

2. Success on top of self-achievement (including providing to family members) - will also entail contribution to the Society

(Self-Salvation, Salvage Others)

a. Getting a self fufilling job - that we can contribute best in terms of knowledge, skillset, and ideas - will contribute to the Company's profit or mission, which in turn contribute to the Economy.

b. Partaking volunteer services or social activites in the spare time or a later part of the life stage such as retirement - to give back to the society - to help people in needs or offering solutions or ideas to Government forum such as REACH that will help to shape, provide feedback or fine-tune Government policies that will benefit the population.

[1:46 pm, 15/08/2022] +RH: Wah! Danny,

Yr std very high lei !

๐Ÿ˜…

[1:46 pm, 15/08/2022] +Vivian: Noted

[1:46 pm, 15/08/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Well I thought this is achievable and this is what many people are doing.

[1:49 pm, 15/08/2022] +RH: Personally, while I hv nothing agst volunteering, my personal belief is tt whilst it can contribute to one's "spiritual" well-being to achieving happiness, volunteering is only possible if (1) one is alredi financially able in life (2) one has the interest (3) one has the time, in tt order.

It is def not on everyone's wish list. ๐Ÿ˜

[1:53 pm, 15/08/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Well, no universal definition of success - but as long as individual possess the notion to self salvage but yet able to help others when opportunities arise - this is success.

Helping others has more happiness as it means we are more endowed and possess the ability to help.

Anyway, as we are in this forum offering ideas - is already a volunteering efforts.

[1:54 pm, 15/08/2022] +RH: Agree.

Our time & effort here. Lol.

๐Ÿ˜…

[1:54 pm, 15/08/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ: Yes.

[1:54 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Because it's about finding something worthwhile in life that motivates and inspires you. Yes money is important, but trends change and what pays well one day may not the next.

[1:55 pm, 15/08/2022] +RH: Such is life.

Ever changing.

Diff priorities in diff times, diff places.

[1:57 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Nothing wrong here, but I would add that this is about survival and a very practical set of looking after oneself. To add to this list something about giving back and/or contributing to society and making the world a better place for all. After all, what is the purpose of life? Just to ensure we have food, shelter and our offspring are able to eat? I hope we can aspire to more than that.

[1:58 pm, 15/08/2022] +RH: But bk to topic ...

R the mgt of our biz corporations of the correct mindset to accept such changes?

Meaning, still stuck on looking at qualifications, and not giving chance to train newbies?

On the other hand, hv our new gen also grown too laidback to learn & only wan the "easy" jobs but at high pay?

See wher the mismatch is ?

[1:58 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: ah yes - this is a good addition :)

[1:58 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: I see you numbered the points in different posts!

[1:59 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Society can be manipulated by commercial interests. Do we really need to buy all the stuff we have in order to be happy?

[1:59 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Do we need to post more videos on social media of our dinners and dancing?

[2:00 pm, 15/08/2022] +RH: Our education system shd also inculcate some life expectations into the younger gen. Make them more aware of reality.

Prepare them better not to just meet the tech demands if jobs but also how to adjust their expectations & handle themselves.

[2:00 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: I was recently in at Italian Village over 1,000 years old. People there life simple lives, are focused around their community and take care of each other.

[2:00 pm, 15/08/2022] +JC: If the govt is serious about redefining what success should look like, then our govt agencies must take the lead to demonstrate what that can mean in terms of new hiring practices. If selection for govt scholarship, awards, promotions in the public sector etc are ultimate based primarily on academic achievements, then such rhetoric will ring hollow and nothing will truly change.

Our govt agencies are still rather traditional and conservative in their hiring and HR practices - younger, scholar types are still being fast tracked and ear marked for promotions etc. If our govt agencies don't change, then what minister CCS just stated is just talk... no real action.

[2:01 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Yes, I believe this is true. The Meritocracy seems to be based on Academic acheivements and those people get access to the best resources and employment opportunityes

[2:01 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: forgive the typo, opportunities

[2:03 pm, 15/08/2022] +JC: Or is minister CCS suggesting that everybody can be awesome no matter what they do? that seems rather naive given that the financial incentives in our society never align with such ideals. Our social workers, nurses, etc. are paid little compared to bankers, govt officials. So when minister CCS says we should embrace, is this is just a mindset change but no change in the reward structure?

[2:03 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Our so-called School of the Arts: "Our integrated academic and arts programme combines academic rigour and artistic development with active citizenry to develop students who dream big, pursue their passions, think independently and lead with compassion. Our vision is to realise both the artistic and academic potential of future generations of artists and creative professionals."

[2:04 pm, 15/08/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Traditional pathway of success in Singapore

1. The traditional path of success in Singapore as we know is as follow :-

a. Do well in school - do well in PSLE, go to elite school - do well in GCE O level, some in non-GCE pathway, go to JC - do well in GCE A level, rare few take up Government Scholarship, go to University - get good degree graduate with good honours, merits or distinction.

b. Get a good job - in Government, MNCs, GLCs, local Enterprises or start a business.

c. Get married, produce offsprings - buy houses, some in addition buy cars.

d. Get offsprings to follow parent's footpath.

e. Accumulate savings and wealth.

f. Retire comfortably

g. Pass down inheritance to descendants.

[2:04 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: They require students who have academic excellence, as well as Artistic Merit because they want creative leaders of the future.

[2:05 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Art is not about Creative Leadership. Art is about exploration, learning, observation, appreciation. It is not about leadership.

[2:05 pm, 15/08/2022] +JC: So in summary, DON'T BLUFF US la... if you want us to work damn hard and hit all the KPIs, chase economic growth, etc. just say so la. Don't say must embrace this embrace that. Like last time govt says SG must embrace life science... then after that govt decided not worth it and the life science grads kena stuck in deadend jobs.

[2:06 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: This is an excellent example of Singapore's approach to creativity: It must be connected to academic excellence.

[2:07 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: My friends daughter opted for Art in her Secondary school and it was schedule for a few hours per week. Less than any of the the academic subjects, even though it was her chosen path.

[2:08 pm, 15/08/2022] +JC: Don't tell us - pursue your dreams! but then don't have the social infrastructure to support that. End up, it is those of us in the middle/lower class that suffers. If my kids pursue interests and do arts, and then end up I need to support them financially when I am old, I will blame minister CCS for spouting such nonsense.

Kids from rich families like our dear ministers can of cos define success however they like - they are already successful cos they born in the right families. For the 90% of us, we have HDB loans to pay, medical bills to cover and ageing parents to support. KNS>

[2:08 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: Yes, I think we are saying there is no evidence the Gov is really promoting independent thinking when it comes to finding our own path to success.

[2:09 pm, 15/08/2022] +RH: No Action Talk Only

(N.A.T.O.)

๐Ÿ˜‰

[2:10 pm, 15/08/2022] +Lock: While I have nothing against the ministers, there is a danger the message could be seen as coming from those out of touch. It's a nice idea and good message, but we don't see the opportunity. In fact, we see the opposite with resources going towards those with academic excellence. The other kids are left out.

[2:12 pm, 15/08/2022] +JC: I'd rather they just tell us the truth and stop the sugar coating. If we don't have social structure to enable pursuing different versions of "success", if we don't have the safety nets to ensure individuals can withstand failure, then all these messages are just relevant for the rich. If you middle/low, please study damn hard, get good qualifications and maybe your children can pursue their dreams. Sheesh.

[2:12 pm, 15/08/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Incidentally, my family, my siblings families, my close friend families and my extended families ----- are align with this traditional pathway of success.

Some rare one go through ITE, Polytechnics and Universities.

[3:05 pm, 15/08/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

However, I will like to bring up our Parents and Ancestors - success story as early immigrants to Singapore - to provide another perspective of "Success".

1. Our Parents and Ancestors are immigrants to Singapore - coming from overseas - some from China, some from Malaysia - and of course our other fellow Singaporeans are coming from India, neighboring Countries from Indonesia and other ASEAN countries as well as Countries from all over the World - as far as the West and other Continents.

2. Our Parents and Ancestors. many come with no dollars in their pockets - work hard as workers, coolies - and accumulate savings by being frugal - but make friends in Singapore - get themselves together to start some business when they have accumulate sufficient saving to earn a better living.

3. During the early days, citing the Chinese immigrants as I am more familiar with - our Parents and Ancestors will try to start a business that early Singaporeans needs and can make a living for themselves and their families :-

a. Textile - where people need to make clothes and wear shirts, trousers, blouse, skirts, curtains etc.

b. Pawnshop - by pooling their savings to collect resaleable items and lend money to those in needs for money to tie over.

c. Food business - by initially becoming hawkers and with enough saving start food business such as restaurants.

4. Many of our Parents and Ancestors are able to make themselves wealthy by being frugal, hard working and do well in business - and at the same time provide a good living environment for their family members.

5. This is the success story that I will like to share ---- which is a very different pathway from our current pathway of success.

[3:48 pm, 15/08/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

My close friend comments :-

7. To me success and happiness means (1) what I'm currently doing provides meaning to me (2) I can do the job well (3) the job pays me enough to sustain the standard of living i wish for.

8. In today's context, we may be too focused on your point 1(b) which may kill our happiness. Overemphasizing on pursuing your interest and love, may get young ending up disillusioned because they cannot make ends meet. Over emphasizing monetary returns make us dull. The happiness which money brings is very short.

9. So we have to constantly decide and find that sweet spot.

10. If I like to cook bah cho mee, I can be a hawker waiting for customers and making $1 or less per bowl. But can I be a Michelin starred chef to serve my unique version of bah cho mee and earned more. If customers like my bah cho mee, this has meaning to me. And between being a hawker at hawker centre and michellin starred chef then I want to move in that direction.

11. Finding that sweet spot is not a constant, as there will be competition to make me irrelevant and lose competitive edge. So we have to keep looking around and looking out for next sweet spot and move accordingly.

12. So to me, able to recognise happiness (meaning and joy for doing something) and reality (monetary returns to sustain a decent lifestyle, albeit a humble one) is important starting point which I advised my own children.

13. Then we can decide to time sliced our lives, do I take up something which gives me high monetary returns, have a strategy to save up, invest for future and then retire early to pursue our interest ? Or we actively find that  balance  in life to achieve all 3 simultaneously?

[3:50 pm, 15/08/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

My comments :-

I noticed in Taiwan - Variety show, music, HK - CantoPop , China, SKorea -K-pop and the West - Hollywood etc - audiences are willing to pay big money for artistes with singing, acting and dancing talents.

These Countries also pay big bucks for arts, paintings etc.

But in Singapore, like what you say - they end up busking in the street to make end meets.

For me, I only can sing like a star in my bathroom.

[6:31 pm, 15/08/2022] +Manikandan R: Coming back to earlier topic on education:

We also need to check how the other countries education system performed during covid and how we can value them in par with our kids.

Some countries where I know they made all passed the degree/ next grade without any classes or exams when our kids went study hard with mask on and social distance, art tests etc to pass our exams here.

So we need to see how we value those foreign cohorts along with our kids! Have to do definitely something to be more fair and and recognition

Searching for Success (ๅฐไบบ็‰ฉ็š„ๅฟƒๅฃฐ)

"... Those brilliant billionaires and many other big deals..."

- - annoymous

Starting Point:

Your first born child, your first car, your first home, your first marriage are examples of successful encounters many people would experienced during their lifetimes. How should individual, society and country embraces and encourages all to seek their little milestones of success whether it is a small achievement of helping or serving others or a bigger surprise like a job promotion. For Success does comes with many failures, simply, life is never certain as each day goes by.

How then can we quantify and quantify an individual or a group of people to recognise and reward them accordingly to what each has successfully attained that many people could not achieved...

In today's digital world of news and social media, the access to information is faster and abundant so much so that achievements and or successful people are featured on these platforms of news. So what is the impact, significance and message sent to the public, children and young adults on these successful stories... To embrace and to accept that the successful lots will be highly visible, rewarding and recognised versus millions of ordinary people doing their daily chores, jobs or simply retired. One suggestion is to dedicate a page to feature smaller success or daily winners on newspapers. Who deserves to be featured daily on the news, perhaps the so called daily heros and heroines of our community and society. It can be a team of firefighters successfully extinguished a big fire, cleaners cleaning or any interesting individuals that are doing their daily parts to the best possible abilities. These are the true life colors of success not exclusively reserved for the shakers and movers of this world...let's showcase a spectrum of success from small to big, simple folks to the big guys. Afterall, it takes an army to fight and win any battle, the lieutenants cannot fight alone this ongoing life battle.

What is life and its meaning...

A meaningful life may include a happy family, a satisfying career or simply a stable and quiet life. In these living examples, can one see there is an element of self contentment embedded inside one's mind and heart. Without contentment, one will not be able to balanced up one's life and lifetime. It will lead to many unhappiness to the verge of anger or mental breakdown of all magnitudes. Is it healthy living, such misery and unnecessary torment to one's lifetime or seek for meaningful things other than monetary gains or chasing that lucky star of success, this lifetime...
