[11:07 am, 12/10/2020] +: 📢 Topic 📢

How do you think we can uplift the wages of low-income workers and better support their well-being?

A new task force will be formed to study how to raise the wages of low-income workers and push productivity growth. This was announced by Manpower Minister Josephine Teo and secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) Ng Chee Meng in separate Facebook posts yesterday.

Mr Ng said the Tripartite Workgroup on Lower Wage Workers will study how to expand the progressive wage model and partner companies to raise productivity to "foster a win-win for employers and workers".

Rama

[11:11 am, 12/10/2020] +: Job scope must be tailored to the individual ability to perform within a reasonable working time frame and conducive environment.

Berny

[11:15 am, 12/10/2020] +: I'm curious, which are the sectors which are considered "low-income", other than those which are currently in the PWM

[11:15 am, 12/10/2020] +: cleaner, landscape, security and few years later, lift technicians for now

[11:59 am, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Low income refer to $2,000 per month or $24,000 per year or below?

Also depends on how many person per household.

Then per capita GDP apply.

Rama

[12:03 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Should be sgd30k and below annually

[12:04 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Don't know the definition of low income in Singapore - unless specifically define.

ZieChon

[12:05 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Probably dont have

Rama

[12:05 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Criteria should change to adapt to ever changing circumstances

ZieChon

[12:05 pm, 12/10/2020] +: But those figures quoted are the guidelines to qualify for FAS or subsidies or etc?

[12:06 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Then when the low income figure is defined - PWM will apply not to job sectors - but apply to workers that fetch the income lower than this figure.

ZieChon

[12:06 pm, 12/10/2020] +: E.g. household PCI about 700 for preschool fees subsidy or something like that.

[12:08 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Then recently my relative because he is young, self employed, met the threshold for govt covdi package, except his address was apartment (staying with parents) and hence, not qualified for any assistance.

Guess all kinds of conditions for different types of help.

[12:09 pm, 12/10/2020] +: This relative was "low income" for all intents and purposes but cos staying private housing, so disqualified.

Rama

[12:09 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Staying as an occupier and not owner should not be considered as being eligible

[12:10 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

PWM initially can apply to industry sectors eg. Cleaners, security guards etc.

But once low income sectors job have been identified and PWM apply - then probably it is the right time to identify those workers who fetch lower income per month based on the state figure - and try to apply PWM to their jobs which can be in any industry sector.

Rama

[12:11 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Agree

ZieChon

[12:11 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Yah at the time the conditions did not provide for such situations.

I mean a young man, just started own freelance work, then covid hit, but could not receive help. Bad luck and circumstance.

Obviously can't afford own housing yet.

Rama

[12:13 pm, 12/10/2020] +: I meant being ineligible

Sam

[12:21 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Workfare criteria is a good gauge of low income worker. The current amount is $2300 monthly income

[12:21 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

When PWM is applied to income below defined figure, it should not be focused on only increasing salary for the sake of increasing the income of the low income workers.

There must be genuine increase in productivity.

Else PWM will increase business cost in the entire economy with no corresponding increase in productivity.

The overall productivity should exceed the salary increase as a result of PWM.

Else every one is paying higher price for goods and services without corresponding rise in quantity and quality.

Rama

[12:22 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Might go up

Sam

[12:22 pm, 12/10/2020] +: As for income so low that qualifies for financial assistance, comcare $650 PCI criteria is a good gauge

[12:22 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Already adjusted from $2000 to $2300

[12:26 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Wage model should be applied differently to different sectors or industries. Otherwise, no body will want to do the hard and dirty job.

Rama

[12:29 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Expect to adjust further upwards .

Stella

[12:33 pm, 12/10/2020] +: If an employer can only pay $X (below G agreed low wage level for supporting family) for a low skill job, and if the job can be KPI or measurable, the employer can offer the employee be allowed to better manage his/her productivity to achieve the pre-agreed work load from 44 hours per week to 35 hours per week as full time employee. Then this worker can take on another permanent part-time job with another employer.  This worker will then be able to better support the family's expenditure.  The traditional view of man being the bread winner is still around regardless of whether that is a fair thing or not in the new age.  The man will suffer angry stares by wife and children if he brings lesser money home and spending more time at home.  Better to spend more hours working efficiently and get better treatment when home.  The hungry mouths at home need to be fed by the working adults.  FYI Willing Hearts used to prepare about 6500 free meals a day before covid 19, now it is about 9000 free meals per day.

ZieChon

[12:44 pm, 12/10/2020] +: I'm about to go for lunch, and to learn there are even more people who need help with a meal is pretty depressing.

Rama

[12:51 pm, 12/10/2020] +: 😞😔

Berny

[1:17 pm, 12/10/2020] +: some coffeeshop have "Belanja a meal" or pay it forward scheme

[1:17 pm, 12/10/2020] +: you can "treat" those who need it a meal

Rama

[1:18 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Yes

Stella

[1:18 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Helping people get their dignity back is better than giving one time charity

Rama

[1:19 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Agree

Berny

[1:19 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Dignity is a long term thing, it is just like upskilling people to help them get a better job, for short term, some may need food to survive the day

Stella

[1:20 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Yes that's why many people support Willing Hearts

[1:21 pm, 12/10/2020] +: We should support G's multiple approaches to resolve this issue.

Rama

[1:24 pm, 12/10/2020] +: I give at random to any local online charity i I come across that is registered with ncss or msf.

[2:21 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Yes DPM Heng indeed has a East Coast plan - the Jurassic park.

He not only say, but will do and can do.

Rama

[2:22 pm, 12/10/2020] +: 👍👌

Blue and White Flag Guy

[2:30 pm, 12/10/2020] +: East Coast plan is nothing but a sham

Rama

[2:31 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Oh!

[2:37 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Among Singaporeans who voted in 2020 for a party dierent from their choice in the 2015 General Election, a larger percentage swung from the People’s Action Party (PAP) to the opposition compared to the other way round, according to a post-election survey by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS).

Eight per cent of respondents in this year’s survey were voters who swung from the PAP to the opposition.

DEMOGRAPHICS AND TRAITS OF SWING VOTERS

Respondents who swung from the PAP to the opposition in 2020 were more likely to be men, comprising 64 per cent of those surveyed.

There were no signi픃cant dierences in ethnicity, housing types, age and education in swing voting patterns

this year, compared to the proportion of these groups in the Singaporean population, according to the survey.

---

(1) Job security and income seems to be greatest factor for the "swing" to the opposition from the "swing group".

(2) Hence the focus is to solidify "job security" and "increase the income" --- across all social class to prevent the "swing" and help to "swing back".

[2:39 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: Whether East Coast plan is good or a sham - we will see in the next election.

To date, feedback is that many people are quite excited about the Jurassic park connector.

Alvin

[3:02 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Progressive Wage model is working, just that some fall in between the cracks. There may be seniors in Hospitality or Service roles which likely not covered here. Would propose Mr Ng to look at those that may have missed the first few rounds. My 2.14 cents

[3:03 pm, 12/10/2020] +: There are also special needs people who may require more help for their wages. And they have no idea how to champion such causes, so it's up to us to fight for them.

Rama

[3:04 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Bring up the fallen crack cases to be looked into

Caleb

[3:42 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Novel coronavirus survives 28 days on glass, currency, Australian researchers find https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/covid-19-virus-28-days-survive-glass-currency-australia-research-13261008#.X4QIvfoVBXA.whatsapp

Another push factor to go cashless

REACH

[3:51 pm, 12/10/2020] +: 4 new Covid-19 cases in Singapore, including 1 in the community and 2 imported

[4:19 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Some people say, PWM can be easily implemented for industry sectors that are low income based workers like cleaners, security guard, lift technicians etc but other industry sector which fetch higher income will also have low income workers like clerk, admin office  workers etc.

Then how to make use of PWM to apply to all industries sectors?

Suggest use ITM for those Industry sectors to transform low wag workers to transform their jobs and increase their pay.

[4:21 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

PWM is actually a subset of ITM.

Except PWM is more focus on low income workers sectors.

Anne

[4:35 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Use non-paper non-glass and non-stainless steel currencies. Maybe gold and silver as in the olden days.

Berny

[4:36 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Australian currency is the same as Singapore currency I think, made of polymer (plastic)

Anne

[4:40 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Amazing a small piece of plastic sheet can be worth $50, $100, $500 and even $1,000.

Berny

[4:42 pm, 12/10/2020] +: I think $1,000 SGD note is made of paper (don't quote me on this, I've never touched it before)

Caleb

[4:42 pm, 12/10/2020] +: $50 note too

[4:42 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Don't know why

Berny

[4:44 pm, 12/10/2020] +: But assuming if 1 day we are to revert back to using precious metals as currency, the world will be in chaos

[4:44 pm, 12/10/2020] +: imagine bringing a kitchen scale with you to go for shopping

CQ

[4:45 pm, 12/10/2020] +: if i were to hazard a guess, the notes which are most commonly circulated and exchanged are made of polymer so that they last longer. if a banknote is damaged, it has to be recalled which means cost.

Anne

[4:45 pm, 12/10/2020] +: No need kitchen scale. Governments normally mints them in very recognizable designs. Eg Canadian maple leaf and American eagles.

Berny

[4:46 pm, 12/10/2020] +: for silver, yes, but pure gold is very soft

Anne

[4:47 pm, 12/10/2020] +: Can go for 22k gold like the African krugerrand. They added copper to the gold. So for a 1oz gold coin it contains 1 oz gold and a small amount of copper.

[5:10 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

So the richest countries in the world overnight is South Africa and Russia - US and China drop off.

Because south Africa and Russia have one of the largest gold mine in the world.

All the wealth with paper money wipe out.

[5:11 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

E-commerce economy wipe out - because electronic transactions cannot be carried out.

Anne

[5:12 pm, 12/10/2020] +: China has the largest gold production last year, but very little gold got exported out. China is collecting gold.

[5:14 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: Economic growth and development not based on production output - but based on which countries got the largest gold mine.

[5:32 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Wonder how much gold do people pay for a bowl of noodles - a speck of gold dust.

No gold, go hungry.

Noodles maker no gold - don't cook.

Economy collapse.

[6:16 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

More than 900 SIA A-380 lunches sold out in half an hour

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/more-than-900-sia-a-380-lunches-sold-out-in-half-an-hour

[6:17 pm, 12/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心: To be paid in cash, voucher or epayment.

Fortunately, not gold.
