[10:53 am, 02/10/2020] +: 📢 Topic 📢

Even as Covid-19 continues to batter the economy, some 5,870 largely high-paying jobs have been on offer since April in professional services, which is a high-growth sector for Singapore.

Four in five of these roles are for professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs), Manpower Minister Josephine Teo said while sharing the seventh edition of her weekly jobs situation report yesterday.

The Government will offer substantial salary support under the jobs growth incentive scheme to encourage employers to bring forward their hiring plans and hire more local workers, she said.

What do you think of the Government’s efforts to create jobs, such as the Jobs Growth Incentive scheme, encouraging employers to hire more local workers?

[11:35 am, 02/10/2020] +: It's a short-term measure, but the government is doing what they can with the resources they have.

[11:36 am, 02/10/2020] +: Now this is something I wholeheartedly support.

"Singaporeans, too, should try to seek overseas exposure in order to thrive in the professional services sector, said Mr Chan."

If they can find better career opportunities outside, both in terms of career and especially compensation, they should go for it.

REACH

[11:59 am, 02/10/2020] +: Hello, REACH contributors!  Please continue to share your thoughts on today's topic 😀

[12:23 pm, 02/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Job security seems to be the top most concern of most Singaporean as survey by the IPS GE2020 post election.

Job security issue needs to be fixed - to ensure Singaporeans can easily secure jobs and income.

Job incentive is one option to get employers employ local workers.

Train and placement should be another option.

In fact, until and unless government is able to provide job security to all Singaporeans - less people will join the "swing group" or "pluralist group".

Ben

[12:24 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Off topic, but motivational Friday message: FOUR STORIES TO START:

1. Nokia rejected Android.

2. Yahoo rejected Google.

3. Kodak turned down digital cameras.

4. Blockbuster reject Netflix.

LESSONS:

1. Take risks.

2. Accept the change.

3. If you refuse to change over time, it will become obsolete.

TWO MORE STORIES:

1. Facebook takes over WhatsApp and Instagram.

2. Grab takes over Uber in Southeast Asia.

LESSONS:

1. Become so powerful that your competitors become your allies.

2. Reach top position and work smart with competition.

3. Keep innovating.

TWO MORE STORIES:

1. Colonel Sanders founded KFC at age 65..

2. Jack Ma, who couldn't get a job at KFC,

He founded Alibaba and retired at age 55

LESSONS:

1. Age is just a number.

2. Only those who keep trying will succeed.

FOR THE LAST BUT NO LAST IMPORTANT:

Lamborghini was founded as a result of the revenge of a tractor owner who was insulted by Enzo Ferrari, the founder of Ferrari.

LESSONS:

Never underestimate anyone, ever!

Just keep working hard.

Invest your time wisely.

Don't be afraid to fail.

Let's go!

[12:25 pm, 02/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Difficulty in finding jobs is facing many Singaporeans even before covid hit.

Sending hundred of resumes and not landing jobs is a sign of trouble brewing and sour the mood of job seekers.

Until and unless this job security problems is fixed, the mood among the population will still remain sour.

Valli

[12:28 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Very true

Ben

[12:31 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Correct - job insecurity, unemployment, lack of feedback, support and guidance while job hunting creates depression, anxiety and problems at home that could eventually lead to civil unrest, crime and disruption.

REACH

[12:31 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Close to 2,200 employers in Singapore are under review for suspected abuse of the Jobs Support Scheme, and 444 have been denied payouts, says Iras.

https://str.sg/JBHg

[12:32 pm, 02/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Covid magnified the job security problem.

Before covid, difficulty in finding jobs is already a problem brewing.

The voting pattern reflect this.

Thus until job security is permanently fixed, and people can find jobs easily like the good old days - else people will still feel anxious and unhappy.

[12:35 pm, 02/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

People will just throw away votes.

More than half switch from "conservative" category to "swing" category - reflect this.

And I am not surprised - because I noticed that people who have difficulty in finding jobs are quite widespread.

I am shocked to learn about this - and have been wondering what have gone wrong.

[12:41 pm, 02/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

2 other issues raised as most concern by Singaporeans are related to job security :-

2. Cost of living

3. Need for diversity in parliament

If got high pay job - who is concern about cost of living?

If got high pay jobs, less people will vote for oppositions to pressure government in parliament to find jobs for them.

So job job job - is the root cause of all unhappiness.

If we fail to bring job security back - we will fail to win over the people.

Jack

[12:42 pm, 02/10/2020] +: At to that above now, electricity and gas going to rise again

[12:42 pm, 02/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Why people in the good old days vote the government - because people are happy with job security and high pay job.

Now this lowest denomination that make people happy is shaken.

Jack

[12:43 pm, 02/10/2020] +: I don’t see price drop when the oils price is Low

Rama

[12:43 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Agree

[12:43 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Yes

[12:44 pm, 02/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Switch to open market electricity.

Rama

[12:44 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Government miscalculated on the policies inspite of long term vision.

REACH

[12:47 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Singapore’s conducive business environment, well-developed infrastructure and highly-skilled workforce is a draw for professional services firms.

As of June, the sector has employed nearly 256,000 workers, with some 9,000 opportunities offered since April this year.

For more information on sector-specific jobs and opportunities, follow Gov.sg on Linkedin at go.gov.sg/govsg-linkedin

Valli

[1:01 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Authorities need to scrutinise further  as there are many more cases of small & medium size self employed businesses who have abuse the system as well.

Those that have ‘ghost’ employees, who uses Singaporeans Nric to contribute CPF but are not actually working for the firm..

Ben

[1:02 pm, 02/10/2020] +: 100%

[1:02 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Yes poor timing to do this. The problem is magnified.

[1:03 pm, 02/10/2020] +: This reads as an advertisement for PWC

Bobby Tan

[1:04 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Many people likes mr who above 60 years can never find a job especially previously we are manager level. Even we wants to work lower employer also ignore our application and this is true fact.

Boon

[1:04 pm, 02/10/2020] +: I think the effort is very very commendable. Thank you. It buffers the workers for some time, brings some comfort for people over major holidays including CNY 2021; and buys some time for the economy to return to some nomalcy by which time, hopefully, economic demands can adequately step into the shoes of the government subsidies...

Ben

[1:04 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Really? $500 for airplane food delivery. Who is that supposed to appeal to and is that what we need right now? Some of the other initiatives are creative, but this reads of indulgence and inconsideration for hungry families .

[1:06 pm, 02/10/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

My close friend comments:-

The mask measure is really helpful and sg should religiously enforce it.

Can gov reveal the dorms' situation? How many are still quarantined? Tens of thousands, or just thousands?

Open up the local economy before more jobs are lost. Other than F&B, where diners pull down their mask, let the rest of businesses return to normal asap.

For F&B business, consider enforcing time based measures to minimise transmission. People should just dine and get out and not socialise.

Boon

[1:06 pm, 02/10/2020] +: This is a great article and highlights a challenge that needs attention too - so that structural unemployment can be avoided/people being left behind due to undemanded skills can be minimised.

Ana

[1:06 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Their target market for that particular set would likely be those who can afford First Class flights in the first place.

...or influencers/bloggers

Ben

[1:07 pm, 02/10/2020] +: If people have already flown first class this won't be a novelty. If people can't afford first class (and most can't) this is a terrible waste of money. Just IMHO.

IPS post-GE2020 survey: PAP still seen as most credible party but has lost ground from 2015

PUBLISHED OCT 1, 2020, 5:30 PM SGTUPDATEDOCT 1, 2020, 9:18 PM

In the latest survey, the PAP's credibility suffered the steepest drop among those aged 40 to 49. The proportion in this group, who agreed or strongly agreed that the PAP is credible, plunged 13 percentage points compared with five years ago.

Such bread-and-butter concerns may explain its dwindling support for the PAP at the recent election, he said.

"They are the ones in danger of losing their jobs (in the pandemic)... and that may have impacted the way or influenced the way they voted in this election."

"These findings reinforce the sense that the issue of livelihoods, especially for the* low- to middle-income households, influenced support for the PAP and WP*," said the research team.

[4:00 pm, 11/07/2020] ☸️ Danny 心:

Last time jobs very easy to come by. Write half a page or 1 page resume.

Interview also not nasty got the job already.

Now send 100 over resume also got no interview.

That's why *people got frustrated especially young voters and mid career voters(.

To turn around the slide in popular votes and win back opposition GRCs - government must revive the scenarios of the past.

Then voters will not want alternative voices or check and balance - as long as people can easily get good pay jobs and easy to do business.

Nor will voters pin the blame of too many foreigners taking away local jobs.

Singapore unlike previously is at growing stage of economic development, jobs come easily and job chase after people.

Now Singapore economic growth is at maturity where high pay jobs are lesser than people looking for jobs especially young graduates and mid career PMETs.

Thus can see people are more anxious and dissatisfied - and these are translated into oppositions votes to register the frustration.

----

PAP must attempt to win over the young generation.

Especially in creating good jobs for the young and make them feel that they have a stake in the future.

The same scenario like our generation where economy and job flourish are the only way to make young support PAP.

Job insecurity, mid career job insecurity will make the young frustrated and throw the votes to oppositions.

[1:46 pm, 02/10/2020] +: I think the effort is there but not enough. This issue have been there since more than 10 years back but it’s most obvious now with covid19 and all. Too little too late. Many employers are too used to having cheap and experience staff. They are no longer willing to wait and train up the staff and wages are depressed previously so they are also not willing to pay more for their new employees.

Berny

[1:47 pm, 02/10/2020] +: Training staff is a form of investment, a pretty risky one, the trained employee may just jump ship the very next day

Singapore building digital economy agreements to help professional services access overseas markets

PUBLISHED OCT 1, 2020, 4:04 PM SGTUPDATEDOCT 1, 2020, 10:06 PM

Singapore is building a network of digital economy agreements to help professional services firms access overseas markets through the digital realm.

This is one of the key initiatives in strengthening the sector’s competitive edge in the face of greater economic uncertainty, said Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing said on Thursday morning (Oct 1).

This includes working on free trade agreements to allow firms here to access markets beyond Singapore, as well as strengthening efforts to build a new network of digital economy agreements.

Pointing out that the professional services sector underpins Singapore’s status as a business hub, he said that how well it does “will determine and shape the future trajectory of Singapore’s growth”. The sector contributed 5.1 per cent to Singapore’s nominal gross domestic product in 2019.

“Professional services does not just create jobs for Singaporeans in Singapore, it also creates very high value-added and challenging jobs for Singaporeans beyond Singapore, and that is how we are able to grow our external wing as well,” Mr Chan said.

Part (2a) Promote other Bright Economic Sectors - to stimulate Economic Activities and grow GDP

But there are bright Economic Sectors that we can promote - to beef up the Economic Activities to keep the Circular Flow of Income going - and stir the multiplier effects :-

1. Medical, Pharmaceutical sector - produce more medicine (like vaccine, treatment drugs), medical equipment (eg. face masks, gloves, PPE, ventilators, swab, test kits, portable test booth, rapid test kits etc).

2. Healthcare sector - as more healthcare personnel are needed to fight the current virus pandemic, more jobs can be created for displaced workers by training them and put them into healthcare jobs as well as health support jobs.

3. IT (Digital Economy), eCommerce sector - rapidly transform traditional business to Digital business to create 2nd wing -- that will allow not only domestic consumers to order the goods and services --- but also allow overseas consumers to order the goods and services). This will have helped to support the ITM (Industry Transformation Map) objectives in double quick time.

4. Construction sector - ramp up construction of isolation facilities, and other government projects to create business activites for construction companies and its supporting companies.

5. eDelivery and Logistic sector - as more business transform their business into Digital business - demand for eDelivery and Logistics support will grow and create more eDelivery and eLogistics support business.

6. Local Food industry sector - this virus pandemics has cause many Countries to lockdown and reduce export of food such as vegetables, poultries, fish, meat, eggs etc and other food essential to Singapore.

Now this is the best time to ramp up of local food production in growing more local vegetables, poultries, fish, meat, eggs etc and ramp up local R&D of cell-cultured and tissue re-engineering of poultries, pork, beef and mutton and fishes.

The above Economic initiatives in Part 2a directed by the Government - can help to compensate for the Economic losses as highlighted in Part 2.

[4:48 pm, 30/04/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:

Phase 3 - Revive External Economy - where Trade is 3 times our size need Government to Government collaboration (1 Jun onwards)

1. To revive our Economy, Business and Jobs - External Economy is our bulwark - for failing to focus on External Economy - it is not possible to ensure full employment.

2. The trick is - how to keep the virus at bay (while vaccine are still not ready, though treatment "Remdesvir" prove positive) -- while Government try to negotiate with other Government to resume trade and production?

3. Is it possible to trade in goods and services by going online with minimum people contact - but still ensure delivery of cargo by ships, planes, lorries, rail etc?

4. If our Government succeed to convince other Government to regain confidence and commence trading, manufacturing, logistics - then we can regain abot 3/4 of our Economy (as traveling, tourism and leisure, f&b for overseas tourists will still be in limbo).

5. Government collaboration can be in holding virtual conferencing to revive the physical activities all FTAs signed, revived the negotiation and talks on the RCEP, arrange safe trading and transporting of cargoes via ship, planes, lorries etc).
