In the first of a series of national broadcasts, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will speak on overcoming the crisis of a generation.

After the National Day Rally last year, many contributors in our chat groups paid tribute to our pioneers; many felt that Singapore’s success was forged on the back of our forefathers’ hard work and determination to overcome the crises in their generation.

What are the values that will help this generation of Singaporeans through this crisis ?

Alvin
[4:41 pm, 07/06/2020] : Respiratory infection is one of the last symptoms for covid

Leonard Lau
[4:43 pm, 07/06/2020] : But thru testing  does not mean these students tested negative are immune
[4:43 pm, 07/06/2020] : Difficult situation

[4:49 pm, 07/06/2020] : Very puzzle.  CNA reporter that they are unlikely infected during school reopen, likely during CB period.  In this case, does the family members need to go for testing and SHQ? Contact tracing? Another new community cluster?
[4:49 pm, 07/06/2020] : Somewhere got -1, the other side has to be +1

Leonard Lau
[4:50 pm, 07/06/2020] : They had symptom before on 2nd Jun so it is most likely they got it before end of CB

[4:51 pm, 07/06/2020] : So family need to be shq?
[4:51 pm, 07/06/2020] : Any further contact tracing from the family outward? Is this a potential new clusters?

Leonard Lau
[4:51 pm, 07/06/2020] : Yes ..most likely .
[4:52 pm, 07/06/2020] : maybe the family are infected by asymptotic

Stanley

Leonard Lau
[4:53 pm, 07/06/2020] : How do you deduce it is a cover up ?

Stanley
[4:53 pm, 07/06/2020] : Did not deduce I said probably

[4:53 pm, 07/06/2020] : Maybe PM speech need to reword liao

Leonard Lau
[4:53 pm, 07/06/2020] : Yes .. most likely parents might in contacts with infected assuming school children are always at home
[4:54 pm, 07/06/2020] : I ask if ‘probably’  .. what is the possible reason that make you think so ?
[4:54 pm, 07/06/2020] : Cover up is an integrity problem .

Stanley
[4:55 pm, 07/06/2020] : Of course

en
[4:54 pm, 07/06/2020] : the news says that contact tracing and investigations are ongoing

Leonard Lau

COVID-19: 5 cases in schools - low viral loads and likely infected during Circuit Breaker
Since 2 Jun, COVID-19 testing stepped up for all school staff and students older than 12 y/o with acute respiratory infection
5 cases confirmed
- From 5 different schools, not a cluster
- All cases displayed mild symptoms, with low viral loads
- Repeat tests using new samples showed all cases were negative
- Likely infected during circuit breaker, not after school re-opening
Affected schools
- Implementing precautionary measures, eg. spaced seating, wearing of masks
- All being cleaned and disinfected
- Contacts have been issued 14-day LOA or HQO (those on HQO will be swab tested)
Stay home & don’t go to school if unwell 🙏
- Do the same if any family member is unwell
Expect cases to be reported from time to time due to extensive testing regime. Those at risk will be quickly isolated

This is an open chat group

Ben
[4:59 pm, 07/06/2020] : Our helper just said she was going to meet her cousin, and asked if that was OK. Of course I said no, but made me realise that the message the CB is ended is confusing people because actaully not much has really changed. The phase 1,2,3 is also not communicated well to most people. How can we make it clear social interaction are still  ow allowed, even though work and schools have opened and SD on PT has ended?

Stanley
[5:00 pm, 07/06/2020] : Very confusing and inconsistent

Leonard Lau
[5:00 pm, 07/06/2020] : Ok .. I just see how you would have make a statement like that .. apology if you felt intrusive

Bobby Tan
[5:01 pm, 07/06/2020] : Yes, the ended of CB is not so clear. Can we fetch our friends or relatives now? Many people actually wanted to know the answer.

Kevin
[5:01 pm, 07/06/2020] : Still want to go phase 2? We are still far.

Leonard Lau
[5:01 pm, 07/06/2020] : Yeah .. perhaps reach has to take this back to agencies to improve this piece of communication

Bobby Tan
[5:02 pm, 07/06/2020] : I believe phase 2 may also have restrictions.

Ben
[5:02 pm, 07/06/2020] : It's likely people can test positive for several months, although not be contagious. We should expect to see cases as we go through phase 1. Not necessarily alarming.

Elena Woo
[5:02 pm, 07/06/2020] : Now become 2 digits liao.

Ben
[5:02 pm, 07/06/2020] : Yes, F&B etc

Leonard Lau
[5:03 pm, 07/06/2020] : I suppose the medical team is mitigating a new situation after limiting of CB in phrase 1 .

Elena Woo
[5:03 pm, 07/06/2020] : No one can guarantee it is not contagious.

Blue and White Flag Guy
[5:05 pm, 07/06/2020] : People think end of CB means everything done
They don't realise about the transition from post-CB to "the best we can do as a society so life can return to normal or transition into the new normal quickly for everyone"

Caleb
[5:27 pm, 07/06/2020] : First time I hear lei

Ken
[5:27 pm, 07/06/2020] : Means when the person infected, the viral concentration detected is low

Ken
[5:28 pm, 07/06/2020] : Everyone infect with virus will create a certain number of virus. Some high some low... so indirectly means lower chance of infection. Based on the assumption.
[5:29 pm, 07/06/2020] : Can be cause the person is late stage almost recovering or person don’t create high viral count

Rama
Ben
[5:29 pm, 07/06/2020] : Maybe true for some countries, where politicians exploit the people, but not on Singapore. In Cuba, the people love their country and see it as their own. That's the closest I've seen to what Singapore has compared to the rest of the world. In most places,  people are at odds with the government and the police. Not here. Singapore is the people, the government and police and more. First country I've ever known that is truly "1 People", #sgunited

Anne
[5:50 pm, 07/06/2020] : Our G has already indicated that they want to work with us on future policies, so this means they want intelligent people with diverse views who can contribute. Sadly this kind of intelligent people may be the minority. The majority behave like sheeple.

David Murugan
[6:07 pm, 07/06/2020] : From the start of CB, I have seen many people wear mask just cover mouth only. Nose exposed. Is this how to wear a mask?  Some stubborn and don't want to cover nose.

David Murugan
[6:12 pm, 07/06/2020] : I am saying this as I go to work every other day cos of my jobscope. Social Responsibility is the key important factor here. Not gov this and gov that. Simple wear mask also cannot follow some, what's the point of closing this and that make people more jobless and economy go down the drain?

White and Blue Flag Guy
[6:12 pm, 07/06/2020] : 🗣 Tune in at 7.30pm as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will deliver the first national broadcast this evening on “Overcoming the Crisis of a Generation”.

[6:23 pm, 07/06/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Actually, democracy one person one vote will throw out a government if the majority not happy.
During the 1960s, LKY can get the majority who many are not educated to support him.
What did he use?
He used the Heart to win over many hearts.
Once this is won, he use his wisdom with sound reasoning to win their votes.
Then he can practically win over the majority.
A government can govern if a government can win over the heart and mind of the people.
1. No corruption
2. Competent
3. The Heart must be in the right place.

WilsonLeong
[8:48 pm, 07/06/2020] : <Summary of  PM Lee’s June 7 speech: Overcoming The Crisis of a Generation>
Covid-19 in S’pore
🔹 S’pore has made good progress in Covid-19 fight.
🔹 New community cases have dropped, dorm situation has stabilised, healthcare system is coping well, fatality rate is one of the lowest in the world.
🔹 Covid-19 will remain a problem for a long time. We will have to learn to live with it for the long term.
Economy has grounded to a halt
🔹 S’pore’s economy has taken a severe hit. GDP is likely to shrink between 4 and 7% this year.
🔹 S’pore has injected nearly S$100 billion to protect workers, households and companies.
🔹 These measures cannot shield us from tectonic shifts in global economy.
🔹 We will not be returning to the open and connected global economy anytime soon.
🔹 International travel and industries that depend on it (hotels, tourism) have been affected.
🔹 The next few years will be disruptive and difficult.
S’pore can be confident
🔹 But we will emerge stronger, better.
🔹 First, we can tap on our economic strengths (being connected to global flows of trade) to create new businesses and jobs.
🔹 S’pore’s stable political system has also earned us a trusted international reputation.
🔹 Second, we have a head start through Future Economy plans: Upgrading workers through SkillsFuture, digitalising private and public sectors, and building R&D capabilities.
🔹 Third, there are schemes to help S’poreans keep jobs or find new ones (e.g. Job Support Scheme, SGUnited Jobs, National Jobs Council).
Beyond Covid-19 and economic challenges
🔹 Externally, S’pore has to navigate tensions between China and U.S., support free trade and multilateralism, and enhance our influence in the world.
🔹 Domestically, we have to improve social safety nets and give every S’porean equal opportunities.
🔹 For S’pore to succeed, her people have to be united and resilient.
🔹 Many Singaporeans have stepped up during this crisis and showed us how we can emerge stronger.
🔹 Together, let us take Singapore safely through this crisis.
