Shaolin wushu academy coming to Singapore


Good to have such exchange programme with the famed Shaolin gongfu masters. Shaolin gongfu are beautiful to watch - whether in fist form, or 18 forms of weapon play.

一艺通,百艺通。
Kungfu instill discipline, hard work, physical training to keep fit, for self-defense in case one needs to use it and the most important to inculcate the value of 武德。

      Shaolin gongfu do emphasize 对练 but not 散打 (sparring) or (street fight).
      Because monks are not supposed to fight. And worst come out with bloody nose and blue-black eyes.


      then how do they know it will work in a real situation ? only thru sparring can one understand your weaknesses and push oneself further.

          With due respect to the monks, I do not wish to comment on behalf of the monks - as they have strict discipline not to involve in fight.
          But those train in kungfu even without sparring experience are quite effective - especially those who are quite skilful through the 对练 and other methods such as shadow boxing with multiple targets and train in striking objects.
          Kungfu can come with all unexpected forms and styles - that traditional sparring martial arts did not expect.
          I recall one chap with white belt are ask to spar with a red belt sparrer - next grade will be a black belt.
          The white belt chap is train in kungfu - and with few strokes, that red belter (a hardcore sparrer) has no chance of hitting him - instead he come away with bruise face, and swollen legs and arms.
          站如棕,动如风,静如松。(When you are in a stance, you stand like a rooted tree and unfallable. When you strike, you hit with lightning speed. When you need to observe every likely move, you keep very still, without giving away what is your deadly move).
          This is the characteristics of any animals - that strike on his prey.

          But like what i say practitioners trained in kungfu should practise 武德 - to practice shadow boxing to stay fit and for self-defense only - not always come out with blue black eyes and bleeding nose through contact fight.
          There will be internal injuries with constant full contact fight.

            Shaolin gongfu - was originally invented to keep the monks who spend their time in meditation to keep fit and not fall ill easily.
            It was documented that the early Shaolin fist form was invented by Arahat Dharmo (达摩禅师)(the 1st Zen Master - that expound the silent teachings of Mahayana Buddhism) - imitate the various animals' movement and help monk trainees to keep fit while practising the rigorous regimental meditation schedule.
