03/08/2023, 9:33 am - +REACH: 📢 *Topic* 📢

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Wednesday (Aug 2) that his government has always dealt with corruption and allegations of improper conduct thoroughly, transparently and by applying the full force of the law and pledged that this will continue when Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong succeeds him.

PM Lee was speaking in parliament about the recent controversies that have captured the public’s attention namely the arrest of Transport Minister S Iswaran by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), the resignations of Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin and Member of Parliament (MP) Cheng Li Hui over an extramarital affair, and allegations over the rental of properties at Ridout Road by Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam and Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

💬 *What are your views on this issue? Do you have any concerns about safeguards against corruption in the Government?*

PM Lee said that the two CPIB investigations and the response to the affair between former Speaker of Parliament Mr Tan Chuan Jin and former Member of Parliament Ms Cheng Li Hui show two aspects of how this government works.

1️⃣ When there is a suspicion or allegation of wrongdoing in the discharge of official duties, especially possible corruption, there is zero tolerance

2️⃣When people slip in their personal lives, the facts of each case will be looked at carefully and the matter will be dealt with as humanely and sensitively as possible, according to the principles that have been established.

PM Lee noted that there have been corruption cases involving political office holders in the past, and that those cases were all handled by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew "thoroughly, transparently, and applying the full force of the law”. He added "That is still how the PAP government deals with such cases," and "It has not changed under my charge; and it won’t under my successor either.

PM Lee also assured Singaporeans that his Government will protect the integrity of Singapore's system of government. He added that trust is crucial for a democracy to work well, and that the founding generation built up Singapore and entrusted it to the current generation in good shape. So, it is incumbent on this generation of leaders to protect and uphold this system, to keep it incorruptible and clean, and maintain high standards of propriety.

03/08/2023, 11:02 am - +Ah Heng: This message was deleted

03/08/2023, 11:03 am - +Ah Heng: ok main topic -> *What are your views on this issue? Do you have any concerns about safeguards against corruption in the Government?*

03/08/2023, 11:03 am - +Ah Heng: as long as in public service -> the members of the service better know corruption cannot be condone and must be dealt with seriously

03/08/2023, 11:04 am - +Ah Heng: this is in theory ...

03/08/2023, 11:04 am - +Ah Heng: but in practical does not mean other country cn do it espically the west we follow

03/08/2023, 11:04 am - +Ah Heng: dun forget we are still asian , we have our values that were brought up upon on

03/08/2023, 11:05 am - +Ah Heng: but as much as we want to be clean and perfect we live in an unperfect world

03/08/2023, 11:05 am - +Ah Heng: thus brought up by me we all have mistake and are imperfect so can we expect others to be 100% or 101% perfect ?

03/08/2023, 11:06 am - +~L: but some others expect to be paid salaries far in excess of most of us as well....

03/08/2023, 11:06 am - +Ah Heng: least we have a near good and clean govt for 55 or 58 years this is something we singaporeans should be proud of

03/08/2023, 11:06 am - +~L: Agreed - and we need to maintain that.

03/08/2023, 11:06 am - +Ah Heng: this is because talents / humans goes to where is being paid more -> do we not want also

03/08/2023, 11:06 am - +~L: And these are relatively minor infringements

03/08/2023, 11:07 am - +Ah Heng: if paid so little do you thing talents will be attracted to service

03/08/2023, 11:07 am - +~L: Yes we do want the talent, and the ethics :)

03/08/2023, 11:07 am - +Ah Heng: is like those working give u market rate and stand benefits will you work

03/08/2023, 11:07 am - +Ah Heng: u rather lay flat

03/08/2023, 11:07 am - +Ah Heng: BUT question is are the so call talents now worth that value! NOTE NOT REFERING TO GOVT PPL here but on general

03/08/2023, 11:08 am - +Ah Heng: dun forget who are the real talents that is making a organization running

03/08/2023, 11:08 am - +~L: Yes, agreed. Crazy pay situation in the world is not just about Gov.

03/08/2023, 11:08 am - +Ah Heng: is not your investors, is not the ceo is not the managers

03/08/2023, 11:08 am - +Ah Heng: is the general workers from back office to the sales

03/08/2023, 11:08 am - +Ah Heng: to feed the ego of the company and her board of directors

03/08/2023, 11:09 am - +~L: It's the investment companies and pension funds who control the financial strings. Gov seems powerless to act.

03/08/2023, 11:09 am - +Ah Heng: is a very vicious cycle

03/08/2023, 11:16 am - +Joseph Yap: 💬 What are your views on this issue? Do you have any concerns about safeguards against corruption in the Government?

Although it may be challenging to enforce, the safeguards against corruption may also take into consideration of non-monetary form of rewards where those with power of influence favouring relatives in the same organisations both work in.

"It all Starts with Transparency?"

"It is all about people to people, people to organisation/nation, people to the establishments and the rest of tangibles and intangibles,...prior or recent experiences and outcomes can have a psychological mindset of trusting or no trust at all!"

- - anonymity

What is trust?

A strong belief in one attribute that will  bring about a high level of confidence and good outcomes.

How trust begins?

No trust can be earned or established without an absolute transparency in information, perception and rational beliefs.

    - - in progress - -

"Beliefs, emotions and sentients are three synthesis of trusting or distrusting?"

- - anonymity

03/08/2023, 11:19 am - +Smiley face: Human just want success! From this moment of happiness or more than satisfaction, confidence is built and so is trust on a particular brand or a group of brands inside the human brains (primary or secondary consideration sets) with the primary set being either recency effects or embedded.

Belief is half way to trust?

If your believing that a brand or a product more than satisfied your needs and wants, you will likely buy and continue to trust the brand, this is known as a repetitive behavior (buying into it).

If your emotions tell you to stay away from something or a brand, it will likely do so with no second thoughts! Why so? It is because the past experience dictates the actual moment and thus the momentum of decision making to do otherwise than to buy it!

If your feelings (sentients) of a person or a brand are of no mental connections or relatively unknown, it will be harder to accept/ adapt at a blink of an eye to buy a new brand or to accept this person's narratives!

So the human cognitive skills and processing are meticulously complex with many wirings waiting to connect into channels of the thought process in deriving a decision whether it is a simple one or a highly mind boggling decision of life or death...

One way is to start getting the conditioning program on a right path! Any out of the path will mean a correction of behavior and thus a new effort will have to be introduced to straighten the intended path.

The programming of the human minds is such a diverse and deviating ecosystem to amend for any intentional. If the proposer wishes to challenge these complex and changing mindsets, it needs to carefully lay out a detailed plan of implantations, interventions and corrections.

Sights and Sounds?

Two keys power drivers of trust is to see and to hear or to listen!

Seeing and listening are believers of all information gathering whether is a fact or a total or partial fake! It is that simple and ignorantly easy to first distort and second to divide a human opinions and views of any given tangible or intangible! It is morally wrong to tweat fake information and nowadays with the abundant of digit platforms of news and videos that are beyond control thus addon to the information war on the in-betweens versus fakes versus facts!...

3. Hence the need to double down on "Ownself check Ownself".

03/08/2023, 1:24 pm - +Timothy Low: I wonder how Civil Service and Political System can "ownself check ownself" when Civil Service is under PMO (Political System)?

2. AGC yearly audit on every Ministries, Statutory Boards, Organ of States - ensure loopholes are reported, audited and corrected.

3. CPIB is impartial, vigilant, conduct check with no fear or favour if any suspicious corruption activities are detected.

4. And these "Ownself check Ownself" system on the civil service and political space - ensure Singapore governance standard remain high and incorruptible.

5. And the final check on the "Ownself check Ownself system" - is the people's vote - how well and how people perceive this "Ownself check Ownself system" has achieve its purpose of ensuring our government integrity and standard are intact.

6. Finally, an impartial and capable elected President and his Presidential council - will have the last key to ensure the key appointment holders in the civil service are indeed of high standards and our financial reserves are intact.

03/08/2023, 1:25 pm - +~L: But that's very hard to do in Singapore. since there is such a small pool of people to choose from, who are experienced, to do the assessment.

03/08/2023, 2:00 pm - +REACH: 📢 *Topic* 📢

03/08/2023, 2:20 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

And so your suggestion?

03/08/2023, 2:23 pm - +Anne: Dear G, why ask us what we think about how you deal with corruption when

- you have an “ownself check ownself” culture, and

- there is no Freedom of Information Act?

You can continue to cover things up for as long as you want. We do not have any information unless international media break the news, or a spokesperson accidentally revealed the information due to slip of the tongue.

We ask for data; you give us derivative and manipulated data. Some people ask for raw data, you ignore them. Some people ask you difficult questions in public forums, you ignore them.   You want us to believe that you are working for us, but the things you do show that you believe you are the elite, the crème de la crème of society, and we are your stupid and gullible economic slaves that you can manipulate as you like, either by psychological means, or by creating laws that oppress us further.

Minister Iswaran has been suspended from duty but his pay was not suspended but reduced to $8,500. Many ordinary people when investigated for corruption would be terminated or suspended without pay. But the minister is an elite, is he not? So he is treated differently, receiving his $8,500 monthly pay, courtesy of taxpayers. Just curious, how many Singaporeans are privileged enough to receive $8,500 monthly pay?

So can I trust that you will deal with corruption adequately? No. I cannot trust a government that conceals information and does not grant a Freedom of Information Act for its people to counter check. I cannot trust a government that continually taunts its people with its “ownself check ownself” culture and continually claim no fault is found.

The most blatant case of “ownself check ownself” is the internal investigation done on Temasek’s “investment” in FTX. Temasek claimed that they invested in FTX by studying the financial statements. Really? Surely a sovereign wealth fund does a lot more thorough checks on their investments than just studying the financial statements? A friend working in corporate finance told me that FTX will never pass their checks. So how did it pass Temasek’s checks? If the investigation found that no one is at fault, it means the process is at fault. If the process is not at fault, it means Temasek was somehow forced to give the money to FTX by bypassing its standard process. So, is there a shadow director controlling the actions of Temasek? What is the real purpose of this money that was given to FTX?

I want to trust my government, but my common sense tell me you cannot be trusted.

03/08/2023, 2:24 pm - +Rama: The elections department should be a body of parliament and not of government with representation from all elected members of of each party in Parliament.  As for nmp and ncmp to have observer status cab be discussed.

Thanks to a stronger Singapore dollar, importers here now have more purchasing power when buying goods from overseas.                                                                                                                                   https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/importers-see-cost-goods-fall-stronger-singapore-dollar-appreciation-inflation-3674571

Not really true.

Controlling and managing money supply and reserves is the job of a central bank (in this case MAS).

Economic conditions and economic growth are the primary consideration what a central bank will do - buying more $S or selling more S$ and buy which foreign currency. <This message was edited>

03/08/2023, 6:47 pm - +~.@: yes, which underlines why there was a reported paper loss for MAS couple of months ago.

03/08/2023, 6:47 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Keeping foreign currency strong or weak is the prerogative of foreign government - and they will keep their own currency strong or weak depending on their own economic conditions.

03/08/2023, 6:47 pm - +~.@: because we strive to maintain a stronger currency to enable our purchasing power

03/08/2023, 6:48 pm - +~.@: btw i am not disagreeing with you. im just reinforcing the reasoning for the lower reserve value

03/08/2023, 6:50 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

We maintain stronger currency to keep imported inflation in check.

But we must also ensure our export market are competitive.

Eg. If we import more raw materials at low cost, and then we sell our finished goods - the price must be competitive to ensure our manufacturers can sell their goods.

If too expensive, foreigners don't buy, and our business here close shops, and people lose jobs.

03/08/2023, 6:50 pm - +~.@: and the export problem is now observable in our electronics export market

03/08/2023, 6:51 pm - +~.@: i know one electronic company already sold one factory building

03/08/2023, 6:51 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Hence money supply are monetary policy that supplement fiscal policy - to ensure our economic growth are healthy.

Not so much to play with MAS reserves.

03/08/2023, 6:52 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Not because of our strong $ - but due to weak global economic conditions eg. US, EU and China - affected by high interest rate, low consumer and business borrowing - dampen demands and consumption.

03/08/2023, 6:53 pm - +~.@: strength is relative too

03/08/2023, 6:55 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Our basket of currency - a secret formula will always ensure our exchange rate are rightly price - vis a vis - the global supply chain, our foreign business partners and our competitors.

03/08/2023, 6:55 pm - +Rama: Yes

03/08/2023, 6:57 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

We buy cheap imported raw materials, semi finished goods, but when we sell our finished goods due to strong dollars - it will even out.

Also depends on which countries we get them from - our basket of currency will work out the right equilibrium exchange rate.

Prior to the use of containers for shipping, wooden crates and sacks were the primary way to ship cargo. In 1956, containers was invented and replaced the old ways of shipping goods (Malcolm Purcell Mclean).

Shipping containers are the goods (finished & unfinished) movers of the 21st century of globalisation and the global tool for trades. It was until in the 1960s the exploded use of containers for shipping goods. The beginning of robust international trades and the eventuality of today's globalisation.

The current global trades using sea routes as the mode of transportation of goods amounts to $22 trillions.

Tuas Mega Port:

The cost to build this mega port is $14 billions, today's money.

The future of Tuas Mega Port will be an abundance of success; a projection based on today's containers volume at $22 trillion. Prospecting, we may net a quarter of the global trades and that means a whopping $15 billions of income for PSA?

How about the freed up land bank from Tanjong Pagar to West Coast areas? What can these valuable land be reused for? What will be the economics benefits and derivatives from these two mega and strategic moves that is megaport and redeveloping lands will contribute to SG?
