On Jan 16, a new initiative called the Great Budget Meal Hunt was launched to help Singaporeans locate cheaper meals amid cost-of-living pressures. The initiative would allow the public to crowdsource meals for $3.50 or less.

💬 *What are your views on the Great Budget Meal Hunt initiative? What more can be done to support Singaporeans amidst the rising cost-of-living?*

Since the pilot of the initiative began in late October 2023, members of the public have submitted more than 1,600 recommendations for budget meals and over 2,500 verifications across about 310 coffee shops islandwide through the CrowdTaskSG portal.

These public recommendations will be added to the BudgetMealGoWhere website from Jan 16, the Housing Board and Government Technology Agency (GovTech) said in a joint statement. The public can also identify stalls serving budget meals by looking out for a circular budget meal decal on display.

📌 *_Government is aware that the cost of living, including the price of cooked food, continues to be a very important concern for Singaporeans_*

“We also know that members of the public are aware of very affordably priced food and drinks in coffee shops elsewhere, and we want to encourage them to also list these budget meals and drinks on our website," said Senior Minister of State for National Development and Foreign Affairs Sim Ann.

The BudgetMealGoWhere website (www.go.gov.sg/budgetmeal) allows users to search for the nearest coffee shop budget meal options. Drinks priced at $1.20 and below are also listed. Since the site was launched on May 19, 2023, it has received 300,000 unique visitors.

📌 *_Number of HDB coffee shops that must offer budget meals has increased_*

Since May last year, all HDB rental coffee shops have had to offer budget meal options upon their tenancy renewal, and the number of HDB coffee shops that must offer budget meals as part of their lease agreements has increased from 40 at the launch of BudgetMealGoWhere in May 2023 to the current 130.

HDB and GovTech said the Government will continue to work closely with food and beverage businesses and operators to expand the implementation of budget meals, while also considering the outlets’ commercial interests.

For 99% of the world are either ignorant, innocent or too engross conquering all tangibles and forgot to include the intangibles of life. That is a disaster for humankind because it's Imbalance for the meanings of life !

For all the written history of wars and atrocities, overwhelmingly, Men more than Women are the criminals of wrongdoings! Proven beyond any doubts, from Alexander the Great to Stalin. And today more Men than women stubbornly continue to fight over tangibles and less of the intangibles of life.

What do we not learned?

In its own self,  Men are the creature of combats and women are less egocentric than men! Today analytics showing just 20% of women are holding high positions and predominantly 80% of men are still in the game of gaining and power grabbing. Just how much more wrongdoings and failures only will humankind finally wake up from the slumberland and begins to understand the true mission of livings and alive?

Last departing words of advice?

Do not bury the lineage, blinded and continuing the legacy, and most of all discriminates or favors other human based on gender or race or even religion because it will be one big grave mistake of a lifetime not knowingly and arrogantly disregards to correct one's previous and past mistakes and all partakings!

If living a life like an illusion or a myth, it will be full of flaws and frictious moments. By means of extending dignity and humility to others and stop pretending things are alright. Perhaps we as human will see it all or blinded till the last breathe?"

18/1/24, 11:46 am - +Kenneth Lee WM: Quite hard for "Anti profiteering" committee to make a case.  Singapore is supposed to be "free market".  Government not suppose to interfere with prices of goods here.

The problem with high prices is that we only have ourselves to blame.  eg: canned drinks now cost $1.80 (at NTUC only $0.60), people still buy because of the convenience.  If *all* Singaporeans cooperate and stop buying canned drinks at $1.80, drink stalls no choice but to reduce the cost. Endure the inconvenience and bring own drink until price come down to something more reasonable like $1.20.  If can't bring in drinks, drink before going there or drink after.

Having the web site that shows places that sell S$3.50 is the right step in getting consumers informed about where to get such meals.  HDB food centres, forcing stall holders to have $3.50 selections is also a good move.

18/1/24, 12:01 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

1. Glad that the one time exercise to push for food center to offer budget meal come post pandemic is taken up by the government.

2. This will prevent high food prices from being entrenched once food prices have risen.

3. As cooked food are daily basic essential for all Singaporeans and residents - having an affordable food prices is important for residents.

4. A very good initiative by the government - to curb high inflation.

In my place, I have notice 2 coffeeshops start to offer lower price food - though no budget meal decal is accorded.

However, there are 2 coffeeshops whereby some food stalls increase their food prices because of GST hike this year.

I boycott such food stalls but instead patronize those coffeeshops and food stalls that offer lower price food to encourage them and reward them. <This message was edited>

18/1/24, 2:02 pm - +REACH: 📢 *Topic* 📢

18/1/24, 2:04 pm - +Christmas: I’m glad the Govt is aware of concerns about high cost of living but simply launching this Great Budget Meal Hunt is just putting a plaster rather than addressing the root cause. Hawker centres provide a public service of feeding the masses conveniently and cheaply. Rather than putting the onus on the hawkers and the public, the Govt should instead be keeping rental low for hawkers so that across the board, they can continue to provide good affordable food.

18/1/24, 2:06 pm - +Christmas: By only targeting a few stores to sell budget meals, how do we know how these stalls provide these meals? Will the ingredients be compromised just to fit the budget criteria?

18/1/24, 2:15 pm - +Japanese Words: Will need to based on feedback.

We can’t expect government to police every policy.

Start from trusting the stores that join the program so that they can help people rather than government force them to do it

18/1/24, 2:15 pm - +Christmas: Start by lowering rentals across the board. That will help lower the food prices.

18/1/24, 2:15 pm - +Japanese Words: Cheaper ingredients don’t necessarily means it’s bad food 😅

18/1/24, 2:16 pm - +Rama: What is the issues for reintroducing rent control!?

18/1/24, 2:18 pm - +Japanese Words: Rental control means public is paying for the lost of income by maintaining the hawker centre. Need to see if it is necessary.

18/1/24, 2:18 pm - +Christmas: honestly i’m quite shocked by how much meals at hawker centres cost these days. I’m happy to pay more than $3.50 but recently i’ve been shocked more often into paying $9-11 for a plate of food that shouldn’t cost that much.

18/1/24, 2:19 pm - +Japanese Words: <Media omitted>

18/1/24, 2:19 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

What will make up the cost of food stalls?

1. Ingredients cost.

2. Raw food prices.

3. Increase workers salaries.

4. Increase electricity and water prices.

5. Rental costs.

6. Need higher profits to earn higher income.

18/1/24, 2:21 pm - +Rama: Cool at home

18/1/24, 2:21 pm - +Rama: With or without subsidies is a contributing factor

18/1/24, 2:22 pm - +Frankie Wee: Wow need to make $600-$700 a days

18/1/24, 2:23 pm - +Japanese Words: Hence per plate need to earn how much? If you sell 150 to 200 item profit need to be around how much?

18/1/24, 2:23 pm - +Frankie Wee: $5 X 120 pax is $600

Profit take $100-$200

18/1/24, 2:24 pm - +Rama: Factor in insurance cover and cpf

18/1/24, 2:25 pm - +Frankie Wee: Ask SME for grant

18/1/24, 2:25 pm - +Rama: Conditions must be favourable

18/1/24, 2:26 pm - +Frankie Wee: If one day make profit total monthly is $3000 to $4000

18/1/24, 2:27 pm - +Rama: Number of full-time and part-time workers too

18/1/24, 2:27 pm - +Frankie Wee: I think owner stall will do it

18/1/24, 2:27 pm - +Frankie Wee: No need employment

18/1/24, 2:27 pm - +Frankie Wee: Not enough

18/1/24, 2:29 pm - +Frankie Wee: Toa Payoh hub interchange basement foods courts at Rojak a lot order one day total 1000

18/1/24, 2:29 pm - +Frankie Wee: $4-$8 owner employees one person

18/1/24, 2:29 pm - +chan5956: <Media omitted>

18/1/24, 2:30 pm - +Frankie Wee: I heard they said no profit take

18/1/24, 2:30 pm - +Frankie Wee: Or little

18/1/24, 2:30 pm - +Rama: Cost to Cost!?

18/1/24, 2:30 pm - +Frankie Wee: Yes

18/1/24, 2:31 pm - +Frankie Wee: Pay expenses after net profit

18/1/24, 2:31 pm - +Frankie Wee: I not sure rental how much it’s possible lower rental in non mature

18/1/24, 2:46 pm - +Japanese Words: More charity then business bah

18/1/24, 2:47 pm - +Japanese Words: Their are old stalls do it really just to pass time and be service to the community they earn from

18/1/24, 3:02 pm - +Christmas: Rentals are a significant portion of fixed costs, which is making it difficult for the hawkers to keep prices down, so rentals need to be lowered. Hawker/food centres are an important part of life for the common people here in Singapore and the govt needs to do more to keep those food costs low and affordable.

18/1/24, 3:03 pm - +Rama: Having graduate hawkers doesn't help either

18/1/24, 4:11 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Looking at the breakdown of the cost, raw food prices and ingredients prices make up the bulk of the cost.

Hence inflated imported prices is the cost that need to be tackle.

Due to geopolitical tensions, war, disruption of global supply chain, global temperature that impact food prices - look like MAS will still need to maintain a strong currency to curb high imported raw food and ingredients.

Alternatively, we need to ramp up our local production of food and ingredients to fulfil our 30 X 30 food security - to keep our food price moderate.

Sourcing for raw food and ingredients that are not impacted by global disruption - such as nearer our homes will be another alternative.

18/1/24, 4:15 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Eg. The container farm - whereby prawns, fish etc can be rear container by container in modular form depending on demand - is a good way to keep production cost low with smaller footfall.

Our local food production can ramp up as demand grow - this is one way to keep food stalls raw food and ingredients prices low - and hence can sell food at lower prices to consumers like us.

18/1/24, 4:16 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

My close friend comments:-

On way to survive this inflation is to bring your own drink BYOD.

Honestly, drink stalls needs little or no skill set and profit margin is very high.

But sorry to drink stalls owners...

18/1/24, 4:17 pm - +Japanese Words: Container farm not to produce cheap food. Is more for food security than cheap produce 😅

18/1/24, 4:17 pm - +Japanese Words: Scale than things can be cheaper

18/1/24, 4:17 pm - +Japanese Words: Modular will not be cheap.

18/1/24, 4:21 pm - +Liang Wei: Agree w Li Shing. Prefer a structural solution that brings cost down

18/1/24, 4:29 pm - +Rama: Yes

18/1/24, 4:30 pm - +Rama: Weekend and holidays,  go to wet market and cook at home. One dish for at least lunch and dinner

18/1/24, 4:31 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Interperse cooking at home and eat outside is one way to lower food prices.

18/1/24, 4:32 pm - +Rama: Try and strike a balance.

18/1/24, 4:33 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Yes this is the only way to cushion food inflation.

18/1/24, 4:46 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

My close friend comments:-

We should enlarge our local food production, not hoping to lower costs but to secure food safety.

When it was cheap and easy to import, we lose the impetus to plug this gap and it may be our Achilles heels.

18/1/24, 4:47 pm - +Rama: Old reusable building is a important part for this

18/1/24, 4:47 pm - +Terrie Wong: I second that.

18/1/24, 4:55 pm - +Rama: Can we go beyond 30%!?

18/1/24, 4:55 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Just think about how our neighbour threatened to turn off fresh water supplies to sg... until sg kept expanding it's fresh water sources such as desalination, newater etc.

My close friend comments:

If we cut down on drinks, we can save a few dollars. It is easier to make drinks than to cook a dish.

My comments :

Yes that's true.

That's why, sometimes I saw people order a plain hot water.

Then dish out a 3 in 1 coffee - and become a coffee to go with the meal.

My close friend comments:

Most coffee shops drink stalls are operated by coffee shop owners.

Since they already charge high rental to stall operators, won't hurt them much if we make our own drink.

18/1/24, 5:06 pm - +Rama: From which tap!?

18/1/24, 5:06 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Now 20 cents is consider cheap.

In Nex Foodcourt, they charge 50 cents.

18/1/24, 5:08 pm - +Frankie Wee: Can bring alone bag coffee and cup then ask pour hot water pay $0.20 😅

That's how some elderly are doing - I observe.

18/1/24, 5:13 pm - +Rama: Coffee shop operator will find fault with patrons who don't purchase drinks when dining in.

Is it?

18/1/24, 5:18 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

My close friend comments:- And if you order a cold drink, you re also paying for disposable cup 😒.

And price difference between teh peng and teh, ice Milo and Milo?

Ice also very expensive. These are items which are easy to trim.

Go beyond 30% means sacrificing lands, manpower and resources on other industries - I believe.

18/1/24, 6:23 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Even hitting 30% is a challenge - as our cost are high eg. Rental, manpower, resources, utilities, production cost etc.

18/1/24, 6:23 pm - +Rama: Without sacrificing but improvise with what we have as Singapore is known for adapting and adjusting to make things work that others are impressed by our resolve!

18/1/24, 6:27 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

Well, let see whether we can hit 30% first.

My contact who are professionals on food sustainability told me that local food production to achieve 30% is not undoable.

It is the price that is high as compared to imported raw food.

This discourage local from buying Singapore produced foods - which in turn discourage local food sustainability farmers and professionals from producing more local high tech food - because imported food are cheaper.

Hence achieving 30% is a challenge if local don't buy more expensive locally produced foods.

18/1/24, 6:28 pm - +Rama: Hope for the best anyway

18/1/24, 6:29 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

I think the sustainability sector is trying very hard.

Some of my extended family members are the sustainability professionals - and the route is not an easy path.
